James Aloysious Clarke born around 1888 in d.c. (I think)
ORPHAN - believe I found him in St. Joseph's Orphanage in D.C. in 1900 Census.
Later living in Baltimore with wife Rosa H(Rose) Peltz and children
Eleanor (born around 1918),
James W (b. 1921),
Charles Elmer (b. 1924) and Helen R. Clarke (b.1927).
Baltimore census puts them there 1920-30.
I believe the family moved to Upper Darby, PA. by 1935.
I am curious as to whether this Clarke family originated in Ireland. Clarke can be Irish, correct?
And what steps can I take to obtain more information about him since he was an orphan. Any advice on how to obtain vital records for these areas would also be helpful
Charles Clarke married Marilyn Engle (Daughter of Gertrude Hughes) of National Park, NJ.
They lived in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. They were my grandparents. Later Marilyn remarried to Henry Ward.
James was my great grandfather. I am seeking any information about this family.
thanks in advance for any assistance

Dear Kathleen,
It would be most helpful to let us CLARK/CLARKE researchers on this list
know the dates of your Joseph CLARKE and perhaps the name of his wife and
children. There are sooooooo many CLARK/CLARKEs that we can't help out
without a bit more specific info.
You should also state why you think he came form England ie family stories,
any proof, any biographies. etc.
For instance, the Joseph CLARKE (b. 11 Feb 1642) married (1st) on 16 Nov.
1664 Bethia HUBBARD and (2nd) to Hannah PECKHAM, widow of Thomas PECKHAM and
daughter of Thomas WEEDEN was referred to in the original posting. He is
the eldest son of my Joseph (1618-1694) who had 10 children. My ancestor
was the youngest son, Carew CLARKE ( b. unk. died approc. 1759) married Ann
Dyer on 14 Feb. 1693 daughter of Samuel and Ann (Hutchinson) Dyer.
Hope that helps some of you out there.
Kindest regards,
Anne Clark-Stewart UE

descendant of Joseph CLARKE -(b.1618-d.1694) married to Margaret (unk.)
Immigrant in 1637 from Westhorpe, Suffolk to Newport, R.I.

My Great-great-great-Grandfather was Joseph Clarke who lived in Maine moved to New York state where some of his children were born, later some went to Ohio.
Any Connection ?

In connection with the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Planters
arrival to Nova Scotia, I am pleased to announce that a limited edition
reprint of Planters & Pioneers, Nova Scotia 1749-1775 (1982 Revised) by
Dr. Esther Clark Wright will be available soon. For those of you who
may not be familiar with it, Planters & Pioneers contains years of
research by Dr. Wright to determine early settlers to Nova Scotia & New
Brunswick from New England and many parts of Europe. The book is
approximately 310 pages and includes information for more than 4,000
family leaders (25,000 names in total including family members) gathered
meticulously from township records, registry of deeds, probate records,
county and local histories, census records, family histories,
genealogies, and so forth. In particular, there were a number of CLARK
and CLARKE families included in the book. Dr. Wright had hoped to
publish future editions but the work ended with her passing in 1990.
Planters & Pioneers is very rare because only a few thousand copies were
printed nearly 25 years ago. The re-print is expected to be ready in
August.
If anyone is interested in ordered a copy, or to get more information
about the book, feel free to send a personal message off the list to
info(a)plantersandpioneers.com .
Kind regards,

Hi
My name is Sandra and I am searching for the descendents or family of Sarah Byfield Clarke. Sarah's mother was Catherine Clarke (nee Byfield) and her father being William Clarke, who worked as a coalminer. Sarah would have been born around 1882 in Scotland. Sarah Clarke had a daughter, named Sarah Byfield Lawton to a John Carr Lawton. Sarah Clarke went on to marry Francis McFarlane and later James Crookston, til she died later 1950's. I am looking for the family of the Clarkes in Scotland. Please write back.

Sandra

This lady was my grandmother but I am having trouble tracing a record of her
birth. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Mary Georgina nee Hoad and
Percival (Percy) Ambrose Clarke and we always celebrated her birthday on 2
Jan. I believe she was born in 1894 inor around Lambeth, Brixton area of

copy of her birth certificate?
Lesley
Beverly,
Thanks for your email. All indications are that my John Baylis Clarke
was born in SC. In 1850, the census taker put SC for his place of
birth, and in 1880 his son put SC for his father's place of birth. John
B. Clarke's father certainly could have come down from VA.
I've thought that my J. B. Clarke may have been named after a prominent
family in Anderson, the Earles originally from VA. They were named John
Baylis Earle and Baylis Earle, but I just will not know for sure until I
find out where my John B. Clarke came from.
Keep my email address because we may find a link someday. John
Clark/Clarkes are hard to trace, and yours is the first John Baylis
Clark that I have found besides my two, Sr. and Jr.
Thanks for responding,
Susan

...Searching for footprints in the sands of time...
Susan, Do you know if your John Baylis was born in the Carolinas or is it possible he may have been from Virginia. I've been tracking John Baylis (Several different spellings) Clark in West Virginia. I don't have parents or siblings. According to census records he was born somewhere in Virginia about 1809. He lived for a while in Allegheny County PA, then to Marshall County, WV then to Jackson County & Wood County. His wife was Frances Rolle, children were George, Baylis, Frances, Serena, Elizabeth, Joseph, William, John, Catherine, Alexander, Jacob, (my great grandfather) and Frederick. He went by Baylis until his wife died, then started going by John. His daughter Elizabeth's death record showed his name as John Baylis. Do you think there could be any connection. Beverly

Ben Clarke Was Killed Near Hammon
While Resisting Arrest
Elk City, Okla., March 11- Deputy Sheriff Moore of
Custer county shot and killed Ben Clarke of this
county, near Hammon, while Clarke was resisting
arrest. The sheriff and posse went out for the
purpose of arresting Clarke, his brother and four
others who were implicated in some offenses in
Custer county. All were arrested except Ben Clarke,
who met the officers with a Winchester, killing one
their horses. The gang to which Clarke belonged is
considered the worst in this country.

Hi
I hope someone can help.
I am trying to find out some information on my great grandfather, Tom Clarke, who I believe was from Wales.
All I know about him is that he married Beatrice Olive Kelly and had a daughter called Marjorie.
I think he died approx 1949.
If you have any information please let me know.
Thanks
Eithwyn
