City of La Crosse
JOSEPH CLARKE, of the firm of Lloyd & Clarke, was born in the city of Philadelphia Jan. 16, 1841. He began his career at La Crosse, in the house of Lloyd & Supplee, in the spring of 1862. In 1868, he married Miss Anna M. Custer, sister of Mrs. W. J. Lloyd. The house of Lloyd & Clarke has always been active in public matters, and especially enterprising in commercial affairs. The Board of Trade has received much valuable aid from the individuals of this firm, Mr. Clarke, having served two years as Vice President and two years as President of the Board. While none of the gentlemen connected with the firm have been active politicians, yet twice has the house been called on to fill the office of Mayor, Mr. W. J. Lloyd, one of the original members, being elected to the office (over Col. Theodore Rodolf) in the spring of 1865; Mr. Lloyd, at that time, was only in the 30th year of his age. Mr. Clarke, after twice refusing a party nomination for Mayor, was, in the spring of 1880, in!
duced to accept a non-partisan call to be a candidate for the office, and was duly elected thereto. The principal events of Mr. Clarke's administration were the erection and equipping of the City Pumping Works, which he strongly favored, and the attempt to secure legislation authorizing a special water-pipe tax against all lots abutting on streets where water-pipes had been laid, or might be laid in the future. This project was favored by Mr. Clarke and a majority of the Common Council, but, being left to a vote of the people, was defeated. (See sketch of W. J. Supplee.)

My GG grandfather was Charles King Clark b. Sept. 1855 in Glanford, Wentworth Co., Canada West ( now Ontario). His parents were Isaiah CLARK b. 1805 in Hampstead, N.B. an his mother was Susan KING b. abt 1820 in Canda West and died abt.1892 in Glanford. She had a sister, Caroline who lived with them on their farm in 1851 ( as per census). I have not been able to find Isaiah and Susan's marriage bond or marriage record but it was probably around 1840. I also have not found any info on Susan's family. Isaiah and Susan had nine children, of which my grandfather Charles was the third of four sons.
Isaiah Clark was the son of Jabez CLARKE b. Mar 19, 1769 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island and Rebecca BURNEY, b. 1780 New York City, New York. Rebecca was in born in New York, as her mother, Abigail LAND BURNEY (later McCARTER) went there with her mother, Pheobe LAND and siblings after their home had been burned by the rebels in the Delaware Valley.
Jabez was the son of Elisha CLARKE b. 1738 Rhode Island and Desire GARDINER b. abt 1740 in North Kingstown Rhode Island. They married in 1763 and had one daughter, Abigail and five sons, Gardiner, Benjamin, Isaac, Jabez and Elisha. It appears that at least Elisha Sr. and Jabez went ot Nova Scotia by Sept. 1783 when they went to Newport Landing Nova Scotia where they already had land which they were granted in 1761. That land was farmed by a nephew, Benjamin BURGESS, who was their agent and tenant farmer. Elisha appears to have returned to Rhode Island to bring his family out when he died suddenly. Desire then applied to leave Rhode Island and go to "Newport" which at this point I am assuming is Newport Landing in Nova Scotia ( now Avondale). The family later all bought land along the Saint John River in New Brunswick at Hampstead.
Charles married Isabella CALLOWHILL in 1882 in Caledonia Ontario and they called their first child Henry King CLARK b. 1884. Charles worked on the railroad, as all of Isaiah's land went to Charles' two older brothers, David Choate CLARK and Henry CLARK.
My Clark and Gardiner families are descended from some of the 20 founders of Rhode Island, with my Clarks going back to Joseph CLARKE, the immigrant in 1637. I am in the process of proving that Elisha CLARKE was a United Empire Loyalist.

I have a Jabez Hopkins Clark (1827-1914) who married a Sarah C. Johnson (1840-1890) in Ionia County Michigan. Jabez's brother Charles Clark also married Sarah's Johnson sister Hannah Johnson. Charles died in the Civil War. Many of Jabez and Sarah's offspring went west to California. I do not know if any of the Johnson cousins went west also (?).

I am researching my 2nd great grandmother's family. She was Wilhimina Almira Clarke of Parrsboro or Lake Pleasant area of Nova Scotia. Born in 1869 in Parrsboro or Lake Pleasant, died Mar 2 1922 in Queen County, New Brunswick. She was the daughter of Richard Clarke Jr(1834-April 11 1900) and Mary McAloney(1837-Feb 19 1879). Had siblings Sarah Ellen, Isabella-who married Samuel Price, Margaret Reid Clarke who may have married a Robert Duncanson, Robert Gordon Clarke and a few other siblings whose names I don't have record of. Wilhimina Almira Clarke married William Richardson who was born abt 1851 in Sweden. They married Mar 5 1885 and sometime between 1905-1911 lived back and forth between Queens County, New Brunswick and Parrsboro, NS finally settling in Queens/Sunbury County(Minto area or Newcastle Bridge)of New Brunswick. They had 12 children. Anyone researching this family please contact me at canadarock1970(a)gmail.com. Thank you.

MARTHA CLARKE was born in or around 1835 in Bermondsey London (then Surrey).
She
married GEORGE AUSTIN in about 1854. I am unable to find any reference
to their births/christenings nor to their marriage. Are there any relatives
out there who may be able to help ? My main am is to find out who their
parents were. Regards Carole.
If any of you are descendants of the Clarks of Milford, CT (especially Deacon George, but also of Farmer George or others) - the Platt Family Association is issuing an open invitation to all their Clark 'cousins' to join them at their annual reunion this year. If you're interested, please contact me off-list at lkender(a)yahoo.com.
I received the following email from Dick Platt (who is the town historian of Milford and also a Deacon George Clark descendant):
"I've probably had more Clark inquiries during the past year than any other, so this led me to wonder if there was interest in a reunion of Clarks. We will be having our annual Platt Family Reunion on 14 July at the Milford Yacht Club, and if there is enough interest in a Clark get-together, I'd like to invite you. Our speaker probably will be Ruth Shapleigh Brown of the Connecticut Gravestone Network, and she has an interesting talk on gravestone carvers and their styles."
"I understand that there once was, and may be still, a Clark Family Organization, founded in 1901. They had reunions, I think, mostly in the West rather than here. If any of you happen to know if this group still exists, perhaps we can really get something going."
"Please pass this on to others of your family who you think may be interested. "
I hope this notice isn't inappropriate to the list - if so, my apologies in advance.
Thanks -

Hi All,
Well I have been searching for the birth of my William Clarke for ten years now, so time for a message to everyone i can think of to see if anyone can help!
I have found him in the 1881+ censuses, but not before. I have tried various births in the indexes, but none seem to be him. Family legend says that William ran away from home with his brother (name unknown who could have been a jockey).
Would love to hear from anyone with any info!

Does anyone have info on the family of John and Rebecca Clarke from Ireland? In the 1870 census they lived in Brooklyn, he was a dry goods retailer, and their children were George W., 19, John W., 13, Robert E., 14, Willie, 9. (They also appear in the 1860 census, minus Willie, with their name spelled "Clark"). In the 1880 census, John and Rebecca turn up in Sun City, Barber County, Kansas, and he's a minister. I'm trying to figure out if this is my family or not... would love to hear from anyone who might know more about them!
