Hi all,
I got a break and found my Clarke. Turned out to be related to a Dumas
Family, who had a daughter marry into the Edmund Lilly family in Montgomery Co., NC.
Anyone else out there with the same connections. Be nice to learn more of
this connection.

I am also the great-great granddaughter of Thomas and Susan
Clarke; great-grandaughter of their son Joseph and Martha
Clarke, and granddaughter of their son Tom Clarke. The information on Patrick Clarke of Ballinasloe came to me
via my great aunt Carrie Clarke, sister of Tom Clarke
and also daughter of Joseph and Martha Clarke. Accordingto Carrie, Thomas' father was Patrick Clarke, a school teacher in Ballinasloe who married a person she referred to as
"Signorita Gillespie." The Spanish connotation seems dubious
as Gillespie is an Irish name. If indeed, he is our great-great-great grandfather, he was probably born around
1800. So far I've been unable to find out more than this.In any event, I'm happy to share my information on our branch
of the Clarkes with you.

I am sorry but I don't have any information on Patrick but I would like to introduce myself. I am descended from Thomas and Susan. They were my great great grandparents: from Thomas, then Peter, then Thomas Arthur. How are you related? I am interested how you found Thomas' father, Patrick.

Hello,
I haven't posted about my grandmother, nee' Daisy WATROUS, adopted name,
Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, in a while. It's a very long story which I've
told before (see archives). For this morning, I'd just like to mention
one part of the story.
In 1911 when my grandmother married in Malden, MA, she listed her adoptive
parents as John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER, but she listed her birth-father
as -- William CLARK. (From memory, I think she didn't mention a
birth-mother.)
We have no idea who this William CLARK is.
The background is that that Mrs. Mary DEXTER grew up in Westport, MA, with
parents, James CLARK and Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE. James
"disappeared" around 1845, abandoning his wife and 10-year-old daughter
(and step-children).
James is one of my "concrete-block walls" and I know nothing about him.
And, because of that, I do not know about his family or his -- uncles,
aunts, and cousins, etc. So, I don't know if he was directly related
to -- William CLARK.
I just have a "suspicion" that Mrs. Mary DEXTER knew her CLARK relatives and
might have visited with them.
John DEXTER had grown up in Killingly, CT, and most of his family was there,
and that is where he and his wife lived after they married in 1850's.
It was around 1885 they left Killingly and moved to Melrose, MA. In 1892,
as an older couple, they adopted a 3-year-old girl -- my grandmother.
But, my grandmother was re-orphaned at Age 10 when Mrs. DEXTER died.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. My grandmother lived in "homes" from Age 10 to Age 20, all in
Downtown Boston. Both she, my mother, and myself -- have searched and
there is "NO" birth certificate - anywhere - for her ! My "suspicion"
is that John DEXTER made the 2 birth certificates for his adopted
daughter - disappear !
(I believe that the little girl was his granddaughter - perhaps a child of
an unwanted pregnancy of his married daughter in CT. Only my "vivid
imagination" can come up with "who" might have been the birth-father.)
(Perhaps my grandmother found out "who" fathered her, and she either
forgot - or chose not to tell her children !) (Perhaps William CLARK?)

I am looking for information on Eli Clark/Clarke christened August 27, 1848
in Friskney, Lincolnshire, England, died 1910 in Decatur, Michigan. His
parents were John Clark (1806-Lincolnshire/1897-Constantine, MI) and Elizabeth
Steer/Stear (1804-Lincolnshire/1870-Lincolnshire). His brother Alfred (my great
grandfather) lived in St. Joseph County MI and brother Jonas lived in

any children. The brother Jonas Clark married Martha Bottomley/Bothamley,
they had 4 children-Will Clark, Eli Clark, Millie Clark Peet and David Clark.
I would be interested in information on that family as well.
Thank you
Pat

I am looking for information on Patrick Clarke, a school master in Ballinasloe. He had(at least)one son, Thomas Clarke,
born there in 1820, who married Susan, also born 1820 and
probably from Ballinasloe. They had one son, Joseph, born in 1840, before moving to Bolton, Lancashire, England in the 1840s during the famine. From then on the family history
is clear.

Thomas King CLARKE had 3 brothers that I am aware of: William CLARKE and Samuel CLARKE, both were laywers in Staunton, VA. John CLARKE, the other brother, was a Surveyor. Their father, James CLARKE, was a school teacher. Thomas King CLARKE was a doctor. Family records say they were all well educated, including their father James. I do not know much beyond James as far as dates and names but I have family notes stating James was from Lancaster, PA while his father was among the Scotch-Irish who immigrated about 1755. An excerpt from some family notes says...
"The Clarke's', as the name signifies, were originally from Scotland and belonged to the Clan Mackintosh. In the 17th century, with other families of the Presbyterian faith, they formed a settlement in Ulster County, Ireland, where they remained for some years, but wishing complete liberty of conscience and of person, they emigrated to America, where we hear of them first in the year 1755 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Our great-great-grandfather practiced medicine there and gave his children the best of education."
I descend from Thomas and am in posession of family records which I would love to share with you. I am excited because you are the first relative from this line I have been in contact with! amandakate76(a)yahoo.com
