Possibly Capt. Benjamin Clarke (sea Capt?)
b. 3 Sep 1721
Warwick, Kent, RI
m. 3 Patience Rathbone
Exeter, RI
Need any documented information on this Benjamin.
Thank you.
My father-in-law Cecil Clark was a sharpshooter in the Battle of Hurtgen
Forest, also mentioned in this book. The Battle of the Hurtgen, although
less familiar than the Battle of the Bulge, was more terrible. Soldiers
literally had to "hug a tree" for protection, because if they laid down on
the ground, they were exposed to the shrapnel from explosives lobbed
overhead and if they came out from behind the tree, they were shot by
snipers. Their only protection literally was the helmets on their heads and
the trees they hugged. By our best calculations, my father-in-law was
shipped directly from basic training in Indiana and put right into battle.
So many were so green... He never talked about it, but his brother-in-law
who fought at Metz was able to relate some of what happened in later years.

On the west bank, an improbable scene in World War II--a council of war held
by four generals on a high bank in sight of the enemy. Also present were Col
Bruce CLARKE [surname caps added], commanding Combat Command A of the 4th
Armored Division, and Lt. Col. Creighton ABRAMS, commanding the 37th Tank
Battalion. ABRAMS was a 1936 graduate of West Point; he was two days short
of his thirtieth birthday.
The generals were worried about sending ABRAMS's tanks over the pontoon
bridge. The bridge might be destroyed by German artillery, as the Germans
now had good observation on it. The tanks could be cut off. Besides, the
bridgehead was so constricted the Shermans wouldn't be able to maneuver. And
the tanks were short on fuel. Finally, the generals asked CLARKE and ABRAMS
for their opinion.
"Well,' CLARKE replied, 'I can't fight the Germans on this side of the river

Hi Dick,
I found the quotation below in the book "Emigrants From England to America":
"CLARKE, Mary, spinster. Bound to John Rudds for 4 years in Virginia. Age
18. Sept. 22, 1684. Witness Margaret Gollan, her mother. 14/410"
I don't know whether this is the same family you are searching, or not, but
I copied it because I remembered a query concerning this on the list.

I need some help. I amd trying to locate the connection with the Clark
lineage to the Reeder lineage and to the Dalton lineage. Here is what I
have:
Joseph Clark's son William Clark married a Naomi C ????(maiden name unknown
she born in N.C.) and they named their first born son William Reeder Clark.
William Reeder Clark is a brother to Nancy Smith Clark who married Jesse W.
Dalton. I do know that there was a Reeder in Grainger Co., in the 1800's.
William Reeder Clark would have been born between 1810 (date of marriage of
William Clark and Naomi) and 1812. Nancy Smith Clark was born on 8 July
1813, next was Naomi Clark b. abt. 1816 then Elvira Elizabeth Clark b. 1826
and then John Clark (I have no date of birth for him). We have some
information as to where the Smith comes from in Nancy's name and so are
assuming that the Reeder would come from Naomi C ?. This would have been in
probably either Grainger Co., or Claiborne Co., Tenn. Around 1840 Joseph,
William Clark and Jesse William & Nancy Smith Clark Dalton were in Jackson
Co., Mo.
Jesse W. & Nancy Dalton named one of their sons Elison Reeder Dalton b. 7
Apr 1837 in Claiborne Co., Tenn.
So you can see where I am coming from.
Does anyone on any of these lines have any information or connection with
the Reeders you are
researching that would tie them in with the Clarks and the Daltons.

I would say the only one close is the Vigo co one which you already sent. He
married in Jackson co in 1879 to Susan "Emma" Thompson. It's so hard to
figure why they all went by their middle names--census search and all makes
it tougher.
Many thanks for the help

The 1850 and 1860 census records for De Kalb Co AL show an elderly John
Clark living in the household of Elisha Clark b. ca. 1817 KY. Also
enumerated in De Kalb Co are Shadrack b. ca. 1810 KY and Oliver P. b. ca.
1815 KY. The 1850 census gives John Clark's age as 64 and the 1860 census
gives his age as 80. Both census records state he was born in NC. Putting
two and two together and referring also to secondary sources, it appears
John Clark was the father of Elisha, Shadrack & Oliver.
I believe John Clark may have been the son of Thomas Clark SR b. ca. 1755 of
Pulaski Co KY. Thomas' son John Clark was b. ca. 1784 and married Nancy
Herrin in Pulaski Co KY in 1806. Nancy was a daughter of Shadrack Herrin Sr
it is logical that John & Nancy would have named a son Shadrack Clark. The
1830 census for Jackson Co AL enumerates John Clark on the same page as
Nancy's brother Shadrack Herrin. The approximate ages of the children match
the ages of Shadrack, Oliver & Elisha in the 1850 census for De Kalb Co.
It appears the three brothers migrated to Comanche Co TX. If anyone is
researching this family, please contact me.

Actual: Proposed (ages based on 1850 census):
1 m b. 1781-1790 John Clark b. 1780 or 1786*
1 m b. 1801-1810 Shadrack Clark b. 1810

1 m b. 1816-1820 Elisha Clark b. 1817
1 m b. 1816-1820 Unknown Clark
1 f b. 1781-1790 Nancy Herrin? b.
1 f b. 1801-1810 Unknown Clark b.
Note:
*According to the 1805 Pulaski Co tax list, when John first appeared,
assuming he turned 21 that year, he would have been born in 1784.
In 1840, John Clark would have been 50-59
In 1850, John Clark would have been 60-69 John Clark in Elishas HH was 64
In 1860, John Clark would have been 70-79 John Clark in Elishas HH was 80
FYI...
Thank you Carol for your input..
My data base (from other researchers, not my line) has:
A. The Jesse, son of Alexander CLARK #12496, with children:
Fleming Clark, b. 1806, d. 1900, m. Margaret Houchens
John Jackie Clark, v. 1808, d. Aft 1860, m. Mariam Hale, b. 1811, d.

George Nix Clark, b. 1822, d. 1910, m. (1) Nancy Lemons, m. (2) Mary Ann
DeHart
(Note! the "NIX" given name could be a clue)
B. The Jesse (I have him married to Elizabeth SULLIVAN, 15 Sep 1799), son
of John Sr. CLARK, #18405, & Obedience BOWMAN as a note:
Jesse's 3 sons are listed in the will of John Clark and John B was
executor for estate of Jesse... Children: jesse (died april 1,1900 in
shelby co,ky), elizabeth, ezekiel, drury, amy ann and dennis...
Do we have two different families mixed together? Can we straighten out
this situation?

Joe,
Thank you. I keep running into this line, but I'm fairly certain they are
not closely--if at all--connected, despite the fact that they turn up in
several of the same general areas as the lines I'm studying. I may have to
revisit this to rule out that possibility.

There are loads of Clarkes from Nobber mainly pre-1875 in the LDS VR2
database.
Do you have these?
If not I'll forward them to you.
Hi,
I am looking for any information on my great grandparents, John CLARKE and
Bridgit McDERMOTT. They lived in Nobber, Kells, County Meath and supposedly had
thirteen children. I believe eight of those children died in epidemics of
diptheria and scarlet fever and five survived. The three children who emigrated
to New York were:
1. Henry Joseph (Harry) CLARKE (b. in County Meath) who married Catherine
McGuire around 1914. They had one daughter -- Kathleen Miriam Clarke b.
9/27/1915. They lived in Forest Hills, NY.
2. Elizabeth (Lillie) CLARKE (b. approximately 1865 in County Meath) who
married James FARRELL (b. Ireland). They had two sons -- John L. Farrell (m. Edna
Ziegler) and Joseph Henry Farrell (m. Marian _______). The lived in Belle
Harbor, Rockaway, NY.
3. Rose M. CLARKE (b. 1875 in County Meath) who married Thomas DUNNE (b.
1864 -- probably in County Meath) in 1908. They had one daughter -- Elizabeth
Theresa DUNNE (b. 9/4/1909) and lived in New London, CT. (Thomas and Rose were
my grandparents and Elizabeth was my mother).
Two of the surviving CLARKE children would have stayed in Ireland with the
parents so if anyone has any information about this family from Nobber, Kells,
County Meath I'd like to hear from you.
Thanks,
Pat
