I have James CLARK b Jan 1843 Carrollton, Greene co, IL d 8 June 1929 Mexico, Audrain co, MO. He married 1864 Carrollton, Greene co, IL to Mary Catherine ANDERSON b 17 Nov 1846 d 17 April 1890. Their children:
Rosa Belle CLARK b 17 Jan 1867
Cornelia Francis CLARK b 19 Feb 1870
Albert Silas CLARK b Apr 1872
John David CLARK b 31 Oct 1874 d 3 May 1958 m Lena Elizabeth SANDERS
Sarah Jane CLARK b 24 Sep 1877 m Malcolm TALBOT / TALBERT
Alvarado Teresa CLARK b 26 July 1880 m Edmund BAILEY
Susie Catherine CLARK b 11 May 1884 m Elmer RUTLEDGE
Iretta Margaret CLARK b 18 Apr 1888 m Carroll Alexander BECK
Cornelia and John went by their middle names of Francis and David; Alvarado went by Alva and her husband Edmund went by Ted. I mention all of this in case a cousin is lurking out there. <g>
I have found James and Mary Catherine in the 1870 and 1880 census for Pike co, MO, and then James with daus Susie and Iretta in 1900 in Audrain co, MO.
What I am looking for, from anyone with access to census indexes and / or images, is James CLARK [probably in his parents' family -- though I don't have their names] in the 1850 and 1860 census for Carrollton, Greene co, IL. I believe he lived his life before the Civil War entirely in Carrollton / Carlton / Carleton, because he also enlisted from Carrollton. Since his birthday was in Jan, he should be 7 in 1850 and 17 in 1860.
Any assistance with census records, or any other clues as to where to look for James' parents, much appreciated!

Just wondering if any of you that have VA/SC connections has a James Clark
b. c. 1805 SC in your data base? I am not necessarily asking if he is a
direct line, just kin.
His place of birth in SC is unkn.

Any family connections unkn.
His move to GA unkn
His first wife's surname unkn
2 children on the 1830 census is unkn
James was a farmer. He appeared on the 1830 Marion Co. GA census and
remained in Marion Co. until his death c. 1878.
He married Elva, Elvina, Elvira b. 1811 SC.
2 children were on the 1830 census but not traceable because the 1840 census
doesn't have any of my family connections on the census although they
appeared again on the 1850 census and continued until their deaths or migration.
2nd marriage to Mahala Richardson b. 1833 GA. She was the dau. of John and
Elizabeth Catherine Richardson who also were from SC and in Marion Co. GA by
1830.
Children:
James b. 1868 d. c. 1889 of fever.
Susan b. 1869
Ely b. 1872 d. 1940 in Mitchell Co. GA.
After the death of James Sr., James Jr., and Elizabeth Catherine Richardson
(part of household), Ely moved his sister and mother to Mitchell Co. GA. All
three of them, including Ely's wife, Ella Mae Griner Clark are buried in
Cool Springs Baptist Church cemetery in Colquitt Co. GA
There are no records found on this family in the courthouse in Marion Co. GA
to date. Anyone?

Hi Lee
Thank you very much for your reply. Sorry, at this time, the names and
places do not match mine that I know of. Possibly in two generations
later. Appreciate your response. Have a nice Easter.

Lee, Joe, Edward A.... You tend to have my ancestral names; but can anyone connect me with my mystery family of Clark & Boyds?
In regard to Alexander CLARK b: 1770-1776 SC and Nancy Agnes fMcGaw SC...7 children.. do you have any more information on the descendants of their children? Wm, Mary, ALEXANDER & JOHN?
Is there any connection of them in Canada? Scotland? or New England?
I am still searching for my ALEXANDER CLARK, b:ca 1844, Scotland? married: Place unknown. MARY BOYD, b:28 Oct 1850, Middle Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland. Mary was D/O: John BOYD ,b:ca 1811 to 29, place unk.& Mary GUTHRIE, b: 27 Oct 1829, Paisley, Renfrew, Scot. Mary GUTHRIE was D/O: William GUTHRIE and Mary NEIL, perhaps Renfrew, Scot.
Need to find the Parents, Ancestors, Siblings, Emigration etc on ALEXANDER CLARK.
KNOWN FACTS: ALEXANDER CLARK & MARY BOYD had a daughter: Mary CLARK, b: 10 Oct 1872, Grantham, Lincoln Co. Ontario, Canada (near St. Catherine, Ontario, Can.) (Per Birth Register.) The Birth Register stated that Mary BOYD was living in Grantham, Lincoln Co. with Her Parents on 1871 Ont. Census; and Alexander CLARK was in Merritton, Lincoln Co. Ont. Can. (NO MARRIAGE RECORD FOUND.) (Assume marriage ca 1871.) Did not find on 1871 Census..unless he may be the one with close matching criteria in North Middlesex, Ontario, Can.
Later, THEY had at least one Son: My Grandfather: William Alexander CLARK, b: Feb 1877, Merritton, Lincoln Co. Ont. Can. Probably had other Children. My Grandfather, emigrated from Niagara Falls, Ont. Can. to Buffalo, Erie co. NY on 1 Apirl 1879 via NY Central Railway. (I assume that he traveled with his Parents or other relatives...as he would have been 2 years old. )
Know that Alexander CLARK & Mary appeared on the 1880 MASS Census in Attleboro, Bristol Co. MA with 3 children in household: Mary, ca 7 yrs; Wm ca 4 yrs; and a John Clark listed as "Other." Mary's Parents: John BOYD & Wife, Mary GUTHRIE, appeared on the 1880 RI Census, in Lincoln, Providence Co. RI USA. with 4 children NOT Including eldest daughter, MARY...who would be my Great-Grandmother presumed married to my Great-Grandfather: ALEXANDER CLARK. Mary BOYD CLARK's Siblings in 1880 RI were: Wm., Archibald, and John plus Sister: Margaret Fairbairn BOYD. I have the death certificates on the three Brothers...but nothing on the women.
There were two related names on the Death Certificates: John ADAMS (Sister in law or Brother - in-law?) and Janet WILSON (who was listed as Niece)..; However, the three Brothers were listed as being "SINGLE." ..
My Grandfather: William Alexander CLARK grew up in MASS. , worked in MASS and married Mary Cecelia DOYLE from Worcester, MA. They, however, actually married in St. Joseph's Cathedral, Buffalo, Erie Co. NY. on 8 May 1907, and then resided in Worcester for awhile.
Witnesses at their wedding were: Lillian BIDEN and John Clark. (relationship unknown). My Father, William Albert CLARK, b: 23 June 1908 in Worcester, Worcester Co. MA. By 1920 these three removed to Waterbury, CT and appeared on the 1920 Census in Waterbury, New Haven Co. CT. Later, about 1923, they removed to Devon, Milford, New Haven Co. CT.
Mary C. DOYLE died there about Jan 1930; (buriel place in dispute.) My Grandfather married second: Grace Dorothy EDWARDS - OBER, about Nov 1931. (No marriage record found.) She had two sons by previous marriage to Mr OBER. (Milton & Raynald). Grace was D/O: Charles Wesley EDWARDS & Mother is unknown.
Any connections or suggestions? Thank you. Please answer soonest as I shall be going north very soon. Appreciate your time.

Joe Arlt we exchanged this information in 2002.
Since 2002 we have had DNA tests. Now the DNA reveals a match with a BENJAMIN
CLARK born 1750-1760 possibly in Virginia He died 1847 in Kentucky. His will was
probated May 18, 1847. He married an AGNES [possibly TOLER] They had a son
RICHARD CLARK born October 4, 1804 in Virginia and died in 1877 in Clay County,
Tennessee. We have been unable to connect these two Clark lines on paper. The
common kin could be before they came to America.
Hi Joe,
We've corresponded before, but it might have been a while ago. I have a
James CLARK/E on my family tree - by way of the Adoptive family of my
grandmother. James is my most "solidly built, concrete-block walls."
A quick summary is that he shows up in Little Compton, RI, around 1825-1827.
He married in nearby Westport, MA, in 1829.
He fathers a child in Westport in 1836.
During the 1840's, he "disappears" and is not in the 1850 Census with his
wife.
He "might" be the James CLARK/E who got on a ship as a "greenhand" in New
Bedford, MA, in 1845 due out for a 4-year voyage to the Indian Ocean.
This James "deserted" in NSW, Australia.
No one has laid claim to him in regards to New England and New York
families. And, I have no other information on him. There is always the
possibility he arrived from Canada or Europe in the 1820's; I just don't
know.
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
FYI:
In 1829, James CLARK/E married Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE of Westport, MA.
Her first husband was Epaphroditus LAVARE, a Mariner, originally from VA.
She had three LAVARE children, and then a daughter, Mary Ann CLARK.
Rhoda's parents were reportedly a MANCHESTER / TOMPKINS couple from
Westport, MA.
The daughter, Mary "Molly" CLARK, b1836 Westport, grew up and married John
DEXTER from Killingly, CT, and that is where they lived their married life.
As a couple in their mid-50's, they strangely left their home and moved to
Boston. In 1892, they adopted a baby girl, Age 3. By then, they were in
their late 50's. Both my "distant cousin" and I believe that the little
girl, Mary Anna Clark DEXTER, was either the daughter or granddaughter of
Mrs. "Molly" DEXTER (without benefit of either husband).
So, my grandmother, reportedly a "foundling" on the streets of Boston in the
winter of 1889 - just possibly might be a descendant of Gilbert MANCHESTER
of Westport, MA, via "a possible scandal" in Killingly, CT, in the "summer
of 1888."
