Hello,
I haven't posted in a while, but I received new information last week from a
researcher on a Newfoundland List. So, I'd like to post the information,
and add a few more facts from my past postings:
The NFLD researcher wrote that a James CLARK and a John
CLARK are mentioned in wills which involve.. Little Compton, RI.
One has already been mentioned on the List in regards to the will of David
TOMPKINS and his sister, Rhoda, of Little Compton. In my opinion, and
that of another researcher, this is .. Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) (LAVARE)
CLARK of Westport, MA.
The other will I was told about last week starts out:
"To grandson Samuel Beiley son of William etc." And, it ends, "To my
daughter, Ruth, late deceased estate left by her son. Son, Thomas Bailey,
executor.
Witnesses: To 3 sons in law Daniel Tabaor? Jabez Reynolds and
James Clark. Wm . Weeden
John x Bailey, his mark.
......
8th of the month called May 1734"
The other will starts out:
"Judith Head of Little Compton. Page 467
To Daughter, Judith Tripp, wife of Jacob Tripp, one silver dollar and a
great chair. To two daughters, Mary Wilburn and Judith Tripp, 3 large
feather beds. To granddaughter, Judith Clark, wife of John Clark, my
warming pan and largest iron kettle ......"
And ends with:
"My son Benjamin Head to be executor.
Judith x Head, her mark.
Witnesses: Thomas Cornell, Stephen Cornell, William Allen, Proved
April 7, 1802"
This NFLD researcher also mentioned a "death record:"
James S. CLARKE, 31 yrs., Nov. 14, 1852.
..
The man I am looking for is James CLARK/E who probably was born in the
1790 to 1800 timeframe. We do not know where ! He was reported to
have been living in Little Compton before he moved to Westport, MA, to marry
the widow, Mrs. Rhoda LAVARE, in 1829.
This James is one of the "concrete-block walls put together with reinforced
cement" on my family tree !
James and Rhoda CLARK/E had only one child that we know of, Mary Anna
CLARK, born in Westport, MA, in 1836 or 1837 (saying this from memory).
(If they had another child earlier, it did not live.) But, by the time
of the 1850 Census, James was not living in the home of his wife, Rhoda,
his daughter, Mary "Molly," and his 3 LAVARE step-children.
Karen in CT (not on Lists right now) had told me a few years ago that he
might have
been the James CLARK who got on a ship in New Bedford, heading for the
Indian Ocean, and he
"deserted" in Australia (1845).
One of the things which we don't know about James is whether he was married
before he married Rhoda. The James S. CLARKE who died in 1852 would have
been born in ~1821. And, that could have been a year when "my" James
CLARK could have had children from a first marriage. I have always had
"a hunch" that Mary Anna CLARK grew up to have CLARK relatives around her !
FYI: Mary "Molly" CLARK married John DEXTER, b1833 in Killingly, CT, and
they might have married in Stonington, CT, around 1855. But, they lived
most of their married life in Killingly. While in their late 50's, they
surprisingly moved to Boston, MA, and in 1892 they formally adopted a baby
girl. They changed the name of the 3-year-old to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER.
This little girl grew up to become my grandmother. (I have posted many
times, and more of the story is in the archives from past years.) My
"hypothesis" is that the married daughter of John and "Molly" had an
"unwanted pregnancy" in the summer of 1888. Because Abner and Clara YOUNG
were an important couple in Killingly, I think her parents moved to Boston
and arranged for the baby to be born up here. So, the couple who had
adopted my grandmother were her actual grandparents.
We will probably "never" know who the birth father was. But, I have
another "hunch" that the YOUNG descendants of Abner .. have the information
"put away in boxes." I had a stroke of good luck last summer and found
out where adult-children of Genealogist, Winthrop YOUNG, were living.
Unfortunately, they chose not to respond to the letter I wrote them !
FYI: John DEXTER was the son of Marvin DEXTER and Mary ALLEN, and Marvin
was a son of Joseph DEXTER and Mary ALLEN - one of 3 brothers who left
..RI..
to go to Killingly around 1790. (Hope I am remembering these names
correctly.)
Thank you for your time.
MERRY CHRISTMAS !
HAPPY HOLIDAYS !
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
I have James CLARK b 19 Jan 1843 Carrollton, Greene co, IL d 8 June 1929 Mexico, Audrain co, MO. He married 1864 Carrollton, Greene co, IL to Mary Catherine ANDERSON b 17 Nov 1846 d 17 April 1890. They had 8 children: Rosa Belle, Cornelia Francis, Albert Silas, John David, Sarah Jane, Alvarado Teresa, Susie Catherine and Iretta Margaret / Maggie.
Cornelia and John went by their middle names of Francis and David; Alvarado went by Alva and the others went by first name. I mention all of this in case a cousin is lurking out there. <g>
I have found James and Mary CLARK and family in the 1870 and 1880 census for Pike co, MO, and then James with youngest daus Susie and Iretta in 1900 in Audrain co, MO.
In the 1880 census, James' sister Catherine (CLARK) ANDERSON and her two children, Mary and Hiram, were living with his family. She may be the Catherine J CLARK who m P J ANDERSON in Greene co, IL on 14 Nov 1867.
In James' obit, in the Mexico (MO) Intelligencer, 1929, his sister Matilda (CLARK) PRIME survived him.
Because of Catherine's son being named Hiram, I am looking into whether Hiram CLARK and Selea / Celia THOMPSON who m on 26 July 1840 in Greene co, IL may be parents for these 3 siblings, James, Catherine and Matilda.
The 1850 census for Greene co, IL lists Hiram and Celia CLARK with children:
Harriet 13 OH
James 10 IL
William 8 IL
Sarah Ann 6 IL
Catharine J 2 IL
It is not inconceivable that they might have had little Matilda after Catherine, and after 1850. <g> Any assistance with census records, or any other clues as to where to look for this family group, much appreciated!

Can you give us some dates for Solomon?

Hi Anne,
In re: to your request, we have chatted a few times and our Clarks seem to
have been in or near the same areas at different times. I use 2 different
emails depending where I am at the two Seasons. this one above currently;
and May - Oct.... at bernied(a)ns.sympatico.ca I search for Parents of
Alexander CLARK who married : Mary BOYD. I just recently returned from
NS; with a loss of vision eye prob..so have not been able to do too much
lately. While in New Eng. I did find the burial cards for some of the BOYD
FAMILY in RI. It seems, my Great-grandmother, Mary BOYD, CLARK..MARRIED
secondly: to;
Henry ROSTRON. and other family members have been found in Census with Her.
She m: 2nd: 1893 RI. obviously. Alexander CLARK remains a mystery since
1880 in Attleboro, Bristol Co. MA. when he worked in the "tannery." Hope
this helps.

Dear CLARKE/CLARK researchers,
I have just updated my hard drive and in the process my ISP "lost" my old
e-mail folders and my old address book.
If any of you have been in contact with me regarding the following
CLARKE/CLARK family from North Kingstown, Rhode Island ( 1630-1783) then to
Queens Co., New Brunswick (1783-1811) and with my 3xggfather Jabez then
coming to Glanford Ont and beyond (1811 to present), please send me your
current e-mail contact address.
Elisha CLARKE married Desire GARDINER April 10, 1763 in North Kingstown,
Rhode Island.
Their children were:
1)Abigail who married Gideon COREY UE and settled in New Canaan, Queens Co.,
NB
2)Gardiner who married Ruth Slocum UE in Queens Co., NB and then returned to
Rhode Island about 1790. He is in the 1800 Cenus of Rhode Island with his
wife and three daughters.
3)Elisha who married Catherine SLIPP UE and settled in Hampstead Queens Co.
NB
4) Benjamin who settled in Hampstead Queens Co. and is buried in the
Methodist Burial Grounds, Hampstead. I have no info whether or not he
married and had any children.
5) Jabez who married Rebecca BURNEY UE ( granddaughter of Robert LAND UE and
daughter of Abigail LAND 1) Wm. BURNEY 2)Isaiah McCARTER UE). They moved to
Canada West in 1811. Their first land record which I found was in Glanford
in 1816. They had at least 12 children, 7 boys and 5 girls. I ma descended
from their son Isaiah who married Susannah KING abt 1840 in Canada West (
Hamilton area).
6) Isaac who also settled in Hampstead. He ran into some troubnle with his
finances and his brothers bailed him out on several occassions. I have no
idea if he ever married or where he eventually ended up.
Looking forward to hearing from you with your contact info and any new
insights into this family.
Kindest regards,

Hi, I noticed that you were interested in the CLARKE surname while
looking at a
rootsweb file. My oldest CLARKE is Alfred born about 1835 in England
and he
married Henrietta. They had a son named Alfred John CLARKE born 1863 in
England and died 1913 near Ontario, Canada. Alfred married Christie
YEAGER
in 1891 and they had a son Charles Ralph CLARKE born 1909 Ontario,
Canada
and died 1997 in Loveland, CO. Charles married Martha Violet BURKE in
1934.
If you know anything about this CLARKE family, I would be delighted to
correspond with you. I will be happy to send you any of the information
that is in my genealogical database.

Do you have any other Clark(e)s in your data base?
Here's what I have on that Avery line...
=========================
David Wallace AVERY #5027, b. 4 May 1831 in NY, occupation Laborer. He
married (1) Deney (Dency, Densey) HAIT #5028, married Abt 1853, b. 10 Apr
1836 in NY, d. 31 May 1875. He married (2) Martha S. CLARK #5029,
married Cir 1878, b. Jun 1847 in NY, (daughter of Wilmot (Wilmit) CLARK
#1049 and Mary E. (Polly) VAN AUKEN #1050) d. Aft 1913. David died 8 Aug
1901 in Thompson, Sullivan Co., NY. 1870 Census: HH 374 403 David Avery
age 38 laborer, Densey Avery age 32, Alvisa age 14, female, Ida, age
13, Melvin age 12, Benjamin age 9, Lewis age 7, Estella age 3 and Wallace
(male) age 1...
David was the son of Issac Avery and Ann Wallace...
The elusive male avery, possible husband of martha clark, daughter of
wilmot clark...is one david avery born in 1831 in new york...have not yet
identified his parents or any siblings...and have not yet checked the
lybolt/avery website to see if he is there...anyway I have so far found
david and martha avery in the 1880 and 1900 censuses...i suspect martha
is david's second wife and will backtrack in the censuses next to see if
I can confirm that...
first the 1900 census: thompson town, sullivan county, new york...in
clara's 1913 obit sister, martha is identified as "from monticello"...I
tried monticello without result...then, realizing that monticello village
was part of thompson town, I checked thompson town...and bingo!
the 1900 census taken 27 jun 1900 lists: hh 276 ED 99
david avery born may 1831 age 69 married 22 years ny/ct/ny farmer
rents the farm...
martha jun 1847 52 5 children born/4 now alive ny/ny/ny
carrie may 1871 29 single ny
emma aug 1880 19 single ny
note: 1) there is a wallace avery age 31 and wife martha 31 in
hh281...perhaps a son of david's by his first marriage??
note: 2) and in hh 282 is another sought after avery...
melvin avery aug 1858 41 m 15yrs ny/ny/ny
stella apr 1869 31 no children born ny/ny/ny
plus two male servants (stella is the "estella w." clark in the text
which follows)...
the 1880 census taken 15 jun 1880 lists: hh43 ED 95
david avery 47 farmer ny/blank/blank
martha 32 keeping house ny/ny/ny
evard? (tried to "see" edward) 16 laborer ny
estella 13 dau at school ny
estella w. 11 dau at school ny (yes! two estellas)
walter 10 at school ny
carrie 8 at school ny
flora 6 at school ny
floyd 6 at school ny (apparently twins altho not stated)
ellen 5 at school ny
mary e. decker 19 domestic servant
charles gordon 42 farm laborer
there are some inconsistencies in the data acquired...let's review what
we have:
david avery b. may 1831 martha b. jun 1847
evard b.c. 1864
estella b.c. 1867
estella w. b.c. 1869
walter b.c. 1870, carrie b. may 1871, flora b.c. 1874, floyd b.c.
1874, ellen b.c. 1875, emma b. aug 1880
the 1900 census says "married 22 years"...i.e., married c.1878 if that
is so then only emma b.c. 1880 is their child yet the 1900 census also
says the couple had 5 children carrie b. 1871 through emma b.
1880 rechecked the "22 years" that's what the record says!? (I have
considered children born out of wedlock but prefer, of course, another
explanation)...
in jun1880 martha is living with husband, david avery, and 8
children...four of which, according to the 1900 census were born to david
and martha...carrie. flora, floyd, and ellen (the fifth, emma was born
after the 1880 census)...I believe estella w. age 11 is the same estella
(clark) age 1 in the 1870 census; a grandchild of wilmot clark, and
still of unknown parentage:
recall that martha in jul 1870 was listed in the household of her father,
wilmot clark...in highland, sullivan county:
wilmot clark age 72 farmer; mary 70; martha 22; louisa 5; estella
1 (martha, louisa and estella all surnamed clark)...
...and (my thought) martha brought estella with her into the avery
marriage ...walter age 10, estella age 13 and evard age 16 in 1880 appear
to be children from david's first marriage...still not documented...
perhaps I can't see the forest for the trees...I solicit your
thoughts...dave
=====================
In the 1870 census in thompson, Sullivan County I find the following
listing: this found on image 51 of 88 on ancestry.com
HH 374 403 David Avery age 38 laborer, Densey Avery age 32 Keeping
House, Alvisa age 14, female, Ida, age 13, Melvin age 12, Benjamin age
9, LEwis age 7, Estella age 3 and Wallace (male) age 1.
The second Estella should also be listed here at age 1. Evard is also
missing, he should be at age 7.
Melvin Avery's mother is Deney (Dency?) Hait. She married David Wallace
AVery sometime around 1853 or so..... She was born 10 April 1836 and
died 31 May 1875.
Melvin was born in 1858. the second Estella AVery was born in 1869 and
it is not probable that Melvin fathered her. I have not found evidence
to indicate that Melvin and Estella Clark AVery had any children.
David Married Martha S.Litts (born about 1847) around 1878. Now Litts
may have been a married name and not a maiden name... I say this because
my family has always said that David's second wife was Martha Clark but
I have found no evidence that substantiates that... I have found evidence
of him marrying Martha Litts... Martha and David had two children:
Emma (born Aug 1880) and Charles W. born 14 sept 1883... died 23 june
1893. The headstone for Charles W. Avery indicates son of David and
Martha Litts Avery.
Now according to the 1900 census... Martha had 5 children and 4 are still
living. If Charles is the one who died at age 10, that leaves three
other children unaccounted for. Are they named Litts? and born before
1878? it is possible that Martha was married before, she was about 31 in
1878 when she married David.... she could have had three children born
somewhere around and between 1868 and 1878.
I have no idea why David and Deney had two children a few years apart
named Estella.. One Estella Helen Avery born 15 Sept 1867 (known in
family as Stella) married Frank Lybolt on 29 Sept 1889 in Port Jervis,
NY and died 15 November 1907 of cirrhosis of the liver. This Estella is
my great grandmother.
The other born Estella W. Avery in 1869 and died February 26 1905.
. Martha: Per 1860, Highland, census, ae 13, b. NY.. 1870 Census Living
w/ Wilmot & Mary in Highland NY. Also Louisa ae 5 & Estella ae 1..
According to the 1900 census... Martha had 5 children and 4 are still
living... (Possibly 3 from a first marriage?)... Possibly LITTS is
married name...
I. Alvisa AVERY #5035, (daughter of David Wallace AVERY #5027 and Deney
(Dency, Densey) HAIT #5028) b. Cir 1856 in NY.
II. Ida AVERY #5036, (daughter of David Wallace AVERY #5027 and Deney
(Dency, Densey) HAIT #5028) b. Cir 1857 in NY.
III. Melvin AVERY #5019, (son of David Wallace AVERY #5027 and Deney
(Dency, Densey) HAIT #5028) b. Aug 1858 in Probably NY. He married
Estella CLARK #1922, married Cir 1885, b. Apr 1869 in NY, (daughter of
Unknown __________ #5043 and Martha S. CLARK #5029) d. 26 Feb 1905 in
Monticello, Sullivan Co., NY. Best guess for birth date & location...
Assume Melvin AVERY is the husband of this Estella Clark... Federal
Census for June 1900, states that Melvin (Aug 1858) and Estela Clark
Avery (born April 1869) were married for 15 years and had no children.
Living with them were Lester Dresin age 19 and Archibold Litts age 21
both were employed as servants. By 1910, Melvin is Widowed and living, in
Forestburgh with Step-mother Martha Litts Avery... Estella: Per 1870
census, living w/Wilmot #1049 & Mary, Highland NY, & Martha #5029...
IV. Benjamin AVERY #5037, (son of David Wallace AVERY #5027 and Deney
(Dency, Densey) HAIT #5028) b. Cir 1861 in NY.
V. Lewis AVERY #5038, (son of David Wallace AVERY #5027 and Deney (Dency,
Densey) HAIT #5028) b. Cir 1863 in NY.
VI. Estella (Stella) Helen AVERY #5032, (daughter of David Wallace AVERY
#5027 and Deney (Dency, Densey) HAIT #5028) b. 15 Sep 1867 in Monticello,
Sullivan, NY. She married Frank LYBOLT #5033, married 29 Sep 1889 in
Port Jervis, Orange, NY, b. 4 Jun 1866 in NY, (son of Alonzo LYBOLT #5003
and Mathilde BILLINGS #5004) occupation Judge, d. 29 Jan 1925. Estella
died 15 Nov 1907 in Port Jervis, Orange, NY. The other Estella W. Avery
(Clark?) born in 1869 and died February 26 1905...

Stella Helen AVery is listed in the 1870 census in Thompson, Sullivan
County, NY.
the listing is as follows:
David Avery age 38
Densy wife age 32
Alvisa daughter age 15 (she is found twice in the 1870 census, if that
is possible.. living with her parents in Thompson and also as a domestic
servant in Thompson, living with Jabez Allen age 64, Wallace Allen age
34, Frederick Allen age 27, Augusta Allen age 30, Edward age 1. this is

Ida daughter age 13
Melvin son age 12
Benjamin age 9
Lewis age 7
Estella age 3
Wallace age 1
Estella Helen Avery was born 15 April 1867... Her Obit reads thus:
From Obituary Nov 15, 1907 Port Jervis Union
Stella Helen Avery, wife of Judge Frank Lybolt, died at her home No. 7
Elizabeth Street, at 5 O'clock on Sunday morning of cirrhosis of the
liver after a long illness, aged 40 years.
She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David W. Avery, and was born in
Monticello on April 15, 1867. Her girlhood days were spent in Monticello
and vicinity, and on Sept 29, 1889, she was united in marriage to Mr.
Frank Lybolt, of Port Jervis. Since her marriage Mrs. Lybolt had lived
in Port Jervis. She possessed a kind, lovable disposition, was domestic
in her tastes, and was greatly devoted to her home and family.
For several years she had been in poor health , and during the past
season she spent two months at the seashore resort of Ocean Grove, NJ in
the hopes of being benefited in health. After her return to this city,
Judge Lybolt began the construction of a summer home along the Plank Road
near Bauer's Hotel at Cahoonzie with the intention of occupying the house
for a part of the year, as the high mountain air was agreeable to his
wife.
Mrs. Lybolt was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of the
Willing Workers Society of the church. ...
I think that is very clear that the elder Estella Avery is David and
Dency Hait's Avery who married Frank Lybolt.

Wondering if anyone on this list is researching Clark/Clarke families in
Carleton County, NB, Canada. Thanks. Don Beattie in Winthrop, ME. PS: I was
just at a funeral in Beechwood, Carleton, NB, Canada this week and saw at least
two Clark families who are not related but are related to me. Saw another
which I am still investigating -- re Allison Clark. And, there are others in
Kouchibouguac, Kent, CO., NB, Canada also related. Then of course there my
mother's Clarks who migrated from Carleton CO to Maine.
Here's my elusive line that I believe has roots in Orange Co., NY. There
are a lot of assumptions, so don't use it without checking it (if
possible).
Does anyone recognize any of the people mentioned?
Thanks
