Hello,
I'd just like to repost my interest in a James CLARK/E who was born anywhere
around 1800. In the 1820's he was living in RI, but I don't know if he
was born there. No CLARK/E family in New England has yet laid claim to
him.
He was the father of my grandmother's Adoptive mother. He was in
Little Compton, RI, in the 1825-1827 timeframe, and married in nearby
Westport, MA, in 1829. (His wife was born in 1800, and was a widow.)
They had a daughter there in 1836, but in ~1845 he "disappeared." He
might have been the James CLARK who got on a Whaling Ship in New Bedford,
MA, in 1844 and "deserted" in Australia in 1845. He was not in the 1850
Census with his wife, his daughter, and his step-children.

Jeannine,
Hear is what I know,
From the 1851 English Census I found the following:
Low Road Friskney:
John Clarke, head of household, married age 44, agricultural labourer, born
in Benington; Elizabeth Clarke, wife, married age 46, born in Friskney; Ellen
Clarke, daughter, age 9, scholar, born Friskney; Jonas Clarke, son, age 6,
scholar, born in Friskney; Ely Clarke, son, age 2, born in Friskney.
This would make Eli's birth year as 1849 which fits with the other family
information I have.
I have a copy of a picture of him that says he was born in 1840 but I don't
think that is correct. It says he was married in 1876 to Millicent/Millie
Bottomley the daughter of william and Millicent Bottomley and he died in 1910 in
Decatur, MI
His brother Jonas was married to Martha Bottomley the daughter of William and
Millicent Bottomley so I am assuming that they were sisters.
I have found Jonas and his family in the 1920 and 1930 census but not Eli.
In 1920 Martha was alive and it says that they were both born in England. I
am just guessing but I believe that Elizabeth Steer Clark died around 1870 to
1872 as John Clark (these are Jonas and Eli's parents) came to America in 1872
after she died, then returned to England around 1874 for a visit and returned
to America in 1876. He had one son Alfred already here, Jonas and Eli quite
possibly came with him in 1872 or maybe later. I am pretty sure Alfred came
with his Steer cousins when they came in the 1850s as he was a Civil War
veteran but I don't think Jonas and Eli came then as they would have been younger.
Jonas had 3 children that I can find and the two boys were born in England
but the daughter was born in MI in the early 1870s.
I don't have much on Eli but I am still looking. Does this help you any and
do you think he might be your relative? I have been looking for more
information on the Clark brothers for a long time. Alfred is my great grandfather.
Hope this helps,
Pat
My gggrandmother Betsy CLARK m. Zebulon BALDWIN
she d. 18 May 1844, Sandy Creek, Oswego, NY
I have been searching for her parents and have seen them listed as John
CLARKE and Phoebe PEARCE (Pierce), b. RI and moving to Sandy Creek.
The line I have seen gives John's ancestry as
Benjamin and Patience RATHBURN
Joseph and Elizabeth NICHOLS
Carew and Anne DYER
Joseph and Margaret. (immigrant).
Any help with proving or correcting this line would be appreciated very much.

Any one who is connected to each of those names.
Jessie Clark b abt 1816 and his following children:
William abt 1840
Jesse abt 1841
Martha abt 1842
John abt 1844
Mary abt 1846
Levi abt 1848
I would be greatly appreciated with any help.
Donna,
This may sound rude, but I don't know whether your family names could be
familiar or not! The reason I put it that way is that I can find nothing on my
gg-grandfather, James Clark b. 1808 SC. Who is parents, siblings, grandparents
are is my brick wall. Where in SC he was born is also a brick wall! His
wife, Elva b. 1811 SC, has an unkn surname. Her name is written in various ways
until her death between 1860-70....Elva, Elvina, Elvira. James moved to Marion
Co. GA by 1830. On the 1830 census he is listed with wife and two children.
What happen to those children is a mystery, James died when my g-grandfather
was 6 years old. This was c. 1878. I don't know when he died, nor where he
is buried. Evidently, Marion Co. GA was a very primitively developed county to
live in. My last mystery is when did he come to GA? As a child? As a young
adult? When he married Elva and moved down c. 1828-30? I have no paper
trail to follow.
The courthouse in Marion Co. GA burned in 1846. Critical to my research.
What I do know about James Clark is that he was a farmer. Married twice:
Elva b. 1811 2 children on the 1830 census. No other children from this
marriage that I am aware of . He married the 2nd time, Mahala Richardson b. 1833
GA. He had 3 children of which only one married and had children. They were
James, Ely/Eley, and Susan. Ely is my line. James Clark's family may have come
to SC from NC and before that VA. I just can't find a thing that verifies
anything concerning my James Clark.
Between 1850 and 1870 he had 2 Kidd children living with him: William b.
1833 SC and Rebecca Jane b. 1845 SC. He had 1 Morrow living with him: John
Morrow b. 1830 SC. The Kidd children lived with him until they married. John
Morrow appeared only once in 1850. I assume he migrated on to AL as most did in
that area.
Mahala Richardson was the dau. of Eliz. Catherine b. c 1791 SC and John
Richardson. I don't know where John was born or when he was born. I assume in SC.
Eley/Ely is a surname and I am wondering if there is a connection to this
family and the Clarks.
At the moment, I am search for straws!
Nora
Seeking parents of Betsy Clarke who m. Zebulon Baldwin and resided Sandy
Creek, NY.
I have seen a site that had her b. 4 Aug 1804 in Washington Co., NY to JOHN
CLARKE and PHOEBE PEARCE.
I've been unable to find any proof of her parentage.
Any help would be appreciated.
E. Lawson
I am new to the list and my brick wall is ALANSON
CLARK. The only information that I have is that he
was the son of FREEMAN CLARK and SEREPTA HAVEN. He
was born about 1830 in Cortland Co., NY (probably in
Scott). He had brothers: FREEMAN, MELVIN, HENRY,
LEONARD, NELSON AND GEORGE. He also had sisters:
ANGELINE, BETSY and CELESTIA. They all lived in the
Allegany Co., NY area. He was married before 1855 to
JULIA. He was living in the Scio, Allegany Co., NY .
He was a Civil War Veteran. Before 1872 he was
married to SEREPTA SPICHT who was born in Ireland.
This marriage information was off from his son Freds
marriage license. SEREPTA and ALANSON had two known
children: FRED AND ANNA. Both are reported to have
been born in Cadiz, Ohio. FRED was born in 1872 and
ANNA was born in 1877. Both of the children returned
to Allegany Co., NY where they married and raised
their families. The last proof of ALANSON or SEREPTA
that I have is the birth of ANNA. ALANSON is my
gggrandfather. FRED is my ggrandfather. Any help
would be appreciated.
