Hi,I am searching for Pinkney Clarke that was born in N.C. abt 1850 in Caldwell Co.Any info would be appericated.Thanks,karen
A couple of weeks ago I sent a post to the list about a book I had located on
the early Irish and Scotch settlers of Pennsylvania. A gentleman from
Michigan, Mr. Norman C. Caldwell, took the time to index the entire book and
offer it back to the list. What a nice gesture and a lot of hard work to
boot. Here is the original post followed by Norman's index.
It is only on rare occasions that I add a book to the list of "must haves"
for the study of Scotch-Irish genealogy. This one is for our friends with
Pennsylvania connections and it is certainly a rare item. Published in 1856
"by a descendant" it is titled:
"A Tribute to the Principles, Virtues, Habits and Public Usefulness of the
Irish and Scotch Early Settlers of Pennsylvania," Chambersburg, Pa.,
Printed by M. Kiefer & Co. 1856, 171 pages.
>From the preface the following: "The writer of the Tribute contained in
this work, had long desired to see from the Historical publications in
Pennsylvania, a vindication of the character and principles of the Irish and
Scotch early settlers of this great State and their descendants against
reproach, as well as aspersion, cast upon them in some modern publications
having pretensions to Historical accuracy...The writer, feeling as if the
sand of his Time glass was nrarly run out, and that he ere long must be laid
aside from labor... has hastily thrown together in his leisure hours, taken
from other avocations, the remarks contained in the subsequent pages."
Those other avocations are Dr. Foote's Sketches of North Carolina and
Virginia, Day's Historical collections, Dr. Smith's Old Redstone, Dr.
Alexander's Log College, Dr. Miller's Life of Dr. Rogers, Dr. Elliott's Life
of McCurdy and others, Craig's History of Pittsburgh, Hazard's Colonial
Records and Archives of Pennsylvania, and American Archives by Force and
Gordon's History of Pennsylvania, Mr Rupp's Histories of Lancaster,
Cumberland and Franklin counties.
The style of writing and knowledge of early Presbyterian history indicates
the author may have been a member of the clergy. There is a lot of detail
on the early members of the church as well as problems with the Indians and
the struggle over land rights during the westward expansion. The book reads
a bit like Prof. Hagy's thesis on the early frontier settlement at Castle's
Woods and it is a combination of history, genealogy and geography.
For those interested in obtaining a copy of the book please contact me at
cscunc(a)aol.com for details.
Regards,
Robert Cowan

It appears from the account in the Assembly's Journal that Rachel FREEBORNE was MOTHER of Richard CLARKE and wife of Thomas FREEBORN (b 8 Dec 1650 Catherington, Hants, England, d. 4 Jan 1713).
Fromthe Maryland Calendar of Wills:
Freeborne, Thomas, A. A. Co., 3rd Jan., 1713;
13th Jan., 1713.
To dau. Sarah Sampson and hrs., personalty, and jointly with son Richard, 600 A., “Freeborne's Prograce,” on Elk Ridge, Balto. Co.
To daus. Jane Thomas, Priscilla Freedborne and Anne Freedborne and granddau. Freenater Thomas, personalty.
To son Richard, ex., residue of estate, personal.
Test: Dan'll Beaver, Jno. Beale, Jno. Moore. 13. 621.
It appears likely that she was Rachel BEARD, daughter of Richard BEARD and widow of Neale CLARKE:
Maryland Calendar of Wills
Beard, Richard, A. A. Co.,24th July, 1675;
10th Aug., 1681.
To wife Rachel, execx., home plantation during life.
To sons Richard and John and hrs., sd. plantation at death of wife afsd., and all other lands except those mentioned below:
To dau. Ruth and her sons, part of “Timber Neck” and sd. Richard's share in event of his death without issue.
To dau. Rebecca and her sons, part of “Indian Range;” also son John's portion in event of his death without issue.
To dau. Rachel Clarke and her sons, all lands above mentioned in event of death of other child., viz., Richard, John, Ruth, and Rebecca, without issue.
Overseers: Brother-in-law Wm. Burgess, and sons afsd. of testator.
Test: Geo. Green, Jno. Raster, Eliza: Cornton, Thos. Pinethwickie. 2. 143.
Maryland Calendar of Wills
Clarke, Neale, A. A. Co.,26th Sept., 1675;
3rd July, 1678.
To wife Rachel, execx., entire estate during widowhood or until sons attain age of 18 yrs.
To son Samuel and hrs., home plantation.
To son Richard and hrs., 400 A. of “Clarke's Inheritance” on South R.
To 3 daus. (unnamed), sd. lands equally in event of death of sons afsd. without issue.
Test: Richd. Sidebottom, Geo. Ardes. 5. 73.
* * *
It appears that this Richard CLARKE therefor must have come into the 400 acre property "Clarke's Inheritance" at South River. The location of "Clarke's Inheritance" would appear to be adjacent the land of James Sanders/Saunders:
Maryland Calendar of Wills
Sanders, James, South River, A. A. Co. 24th Nov., 1702;
20th May, 1702.
To son James, “Batchelor's Hope” on South River Ridge and adjoining lands of Wm. Richardson and Richard Clarke, also 150 A., “Johns Cabin Ridge,” and 140 A., “Equality,” both tracts on South R. In event of death of son James, land afsd. to pass to son Robert.
To sons James and Robert, 500 A., “Jameses Forrest” on Gunpowder R., Balto. Co.
To son Robert afsd. and hrs., dwelling plantation 350 A., “Lapston,” he dying without issue to pass to son James and hrs., in turn to dau. Anne Chambers and hrs.
To granddau. Rebecka Chambers, grandsons William and James, sons of son Robert, personalty.
Sons James and Robert afsd., exs. and residuary legatees of personal estate.
Test: Thos. Carpenter, Richard Jones, Tho. Larkin, Thos. Gassaway. 12. 125.
*
Sometime after the death of James Saunders and possibly after the incident described inthe Journal, "Clarke's Inheritance" seems to have come into the possession of George PARKER, of Calvert County:
Maryland Calendar of Wills
Parker, George,Calvert Co.,1st Mch., 1710;
5th Apr., 1711.
To wife Susanna, during life, land “Clahammon,” she paying yearly to Joseph Tilley money due on same; also to wife land adjoining bought from Jonah Wilson and that land –– at the landing, bought from John Parker.
To son Gabriel, land afsd. bequeathed wife at her decease, also lot in Hunting Towne and “Clarke's Inheritance” in A. A. Co. where Richd. Clarke lived.
To dau. Eliza: and hrs., land –– bought of Thos. Atterberry.
To dau. Susanna and hrs., 250 A., part of “Swin S (illegible) Rest,” near branches of “Fishing Creek.”
To dau. Mary (Marie) and hrs., “Clarke's Walkes” on branches of Patuxent, also part of “Roper Gray” nr. head of South R., bought of “Old” Wm. Roper and his son Henry, and 100 A., part of “Johnson's Farm,” in freshes of Patuxent, bought of Robert Sawel.
To dau. Sarah and hrs., land –– near Buzzard's Island, bought of Thos. Gosling.
To eld. son of Robert Spickernell, personalty.
Brother Preston and Bryan Mackdaniel to have 3 yrs. to pay certain indebtedness.
Indenture of Jno. Conaway and Evan Evans to be 4 yrs. from their arrival.
Wife Susannah, extx., and also to act in testator's place in administration of estate of her father, Gabriel Parrot; she and child. afsd., residuary legatees, excepting dau. Eliza:, who is to have only what is specified above.
Test: Elias Poleman, William Elt, Elinor Elt. 13. 201.

Richard CLARKE appears to have been married to a sister of the MERIARTE/MARYARTEE/MARIARTEE brothers -- Daniel and Edward.
Daniel MARYARTEE (d 21 Feb 1726) seems to have been married to Eleanor BEALE. He seems to have been the son of Edward MARYARTEE and Honor O'Brian MARYARTEE (bur. 8 Oct 1700).
One MARYARTEE sister, Margaret, was married to Col. Thomas SPRIGG. The another, Elizabeth, is shown in some secondary sources to be married to a Mattias CLARK, of Prince George, MD. But the account inthe Journal, taken together with the Parish records from All Hallowes, seems to indicate that this Elizabeth was probably married to Richard CLARKE.
A careful reading of the Will of Elizabeth LEVETT seems to CONFIRM the genealogical information implicit in the Journal account:
Maryland Calendar of Wills
Levett, Elizabeth, widow, Prince George's Co., 22nd Sept., 1725;
25th Nov., 1725.
To son Robert, all testator's interest in estate in Beverly, Yorkshire, due her as relict of Robt, Levett, dec'd, and personalty; to be of age at 18.
To son John, personalty and £150 at age of 18.
To dau. Elizabeth Duskin, bro. Daniel Mariartee, sister Margarett Sprigg and Col. James Haddock, personalty.
To daus. Margarett and Ruth Clark, residue of estate.
Exs.: Col. James Haddock and dau. Margarett Clark.
Test: Josiah Wilson, Margaret Dick, Lingan Wilson. 18, 416.
I read this to indicate that Elizabeth LEVETT is the SISTER of Daniel MARIARTEE and SISTER of Margaret Moriartee SPRIGG. She expressly mentions DAUGHTERS named Margaret and Ruth CLARK, as well as a daughter named Elizabeth DUSKIN. Though the former two daughters are NOT amongst the children of Richard and Elizabeth CLARKE shown in All Hallowes Parish, it would appear that Elizabeth MARIARTEE was first married to Richard CLARK and later to Robert LEVETT.
*
The younger Neale CLARKE mentioned in the tale would appear to be the Neale CLARKE who married Jane JONES on 17 Oct 1699. And the Will of William JONES would indicate that this Jane JONES was the daughter of the William JONES who died in 1705:
Maryland Calendar of Wills.
Jones, William, Sr., A. A. Co. (Planter).31st May, 1705;
4th Aug., 1705.
To wife Elizabeth, dwelling plantation and lands during life; to pass to son William at her decease.
To daus. Mary, wife of John Duvall, Jane, wife of Neal Clarke, and Ann, dau. of Charles Cheeney, and granddau. Mary Duvall, personalty.
To dau. Mary and Anthony Buddingfield her husband, land on which they dwell, part of “Johns Cabbin Ridge.”
To wife afsd., extx., and grandson Wm. Trogden, residue of estate.
Test: Richard Duckett, John Starkey, Jno. Powell. 3.489.
Edward MARYARTEE (d 20 May 1718) was married to Rachel GREY on 5 Feb 1705 as shown.

Looking for information on the descedants of a James (Jock) Clark and a
Jemima Duthie b 31 Oct 1883, Dun, Fofarshire (Angus) who emigrated from
Scotland to Canada between 1910 - 1920 or thereabouts. Jemima's brother
John Alexander Duthie emigrated first and his sister followed a couple
of years later. I vaguely remember as a wee laddie their sister Jessie
Mary Norrie Duthie (my grandmother) mentioning Vancouver, British
Columbia and Saskatchewan, however, I am not sure is this related to
both families having moved after settling in Canada or perhaps one
family being in Vancouver and the other in Saskatchewan. Any
information would be appreciated as contact with the families appears to
have been lost on the death of a 90 year old aunt a few years ago.

Hello,
Not my family or line - found this obit in a book, its not complete, but maybe will help someone.
Mr. Henry Martyn Clarke, who died Saturday, was the eldest son of Rev. Dorus Clarke of Boston. He was born at Blandford, Nov. 19, 1826. Early in life he was associated in business with Grand, Daniel & Co., paper manufacturers. Later he became a partner with his brother-in-law, the late Samuel D. Warren, in the firm of S. D. Warren & Co. Still later he established with Dixwell Thompson and Hamilton McK Twombly, the form of H. M. Clarke & Co. of which he was the senior partner, this firm doing a large business in the manufacturing of paper at Pepperell and Bennington. He was a member of the Massachu- (there it stops)
There was no date of death, but the obit which is complete in the clipping (for Robert Browning, is 1889, the book I found it in was printed 1885)

I am trying to find out more about Robert John Clarke, possibly from the Rochester, N.Y. area. I believe he was born Mar 17, 1891, was married Nov 15, 1911 (I don't know to who), and died Apr 11, 1919. I believe he may be my great-grandfather, or at least may have been married to my great-grandmother. Any matches out there?
