Dear Bill and Rita,
Thank you so much for your kind reply. However, these Clarkes and Lyons don't
match up at all with my folks. That's the problem with these common names.
Thanks again, and as always, good luck on your own search.
Best regards,
Amy Horgas (yes, an unusual name, but tougher than the dickens to pin down!)
1860 Carroll Township, Washington Co., PA. Census:
Lyman Clark 46 b. Boston, Ma.
Catherine 39 b.Canada
Augustus 19 b. Pa.
John 16 b. Pa.
Lyman 11 b.Pa
Robert 7 b.Pa
George 4 b.Pa.
Benjamin 6/12 mo b. Pa.
I also have a 1900 census page of Wheeling, Marshall Co., WV that Robert listed his Father as being born New York and his Mother born Wales...Go figure.............I've heard such tales about these Clark's from my family I don't know what to believe. Supposedly 2 of the boys owned a "Barbershop" together somewhere ???Robert worked in the mines in Marshall Co., WV , 1890's. Robbed a bank and died of a shotgun wound ? Lyman, my Grandfather, b. 1891 Wheeling, Marshall Co., WV was called "Powderpuff" because he was very well known by the ladies. I don't know what put him into a work camp around 1932 but supposedly jumped the fence and escaped....
Would anyone like to claim my family....Ha.Ha..
Thank-you,
Jo Clark
Cecilia-- Actually, Enos Clark and Naomi Weston did have a son Asa Clark, b.
12/5/1776 who had a son Asa Weston Clark, b. 11/23/1810. Additional
siblings of Asa Weston were: Sophroina, Naomi, Sarah, and Amanda. Asa
Weston Clark married Lydia Warren Dunbar and they had 4 children: Mary ,
John , Malcolm and Cecilia. Malcolm had a son Ernest. The family settled
in Leicester, MA. I don't have any details that connect directly. Steve

Hi Stephen,
The name WESTON in your post intrigues me because I have an Ezra S. Clark b.
1816 in Haverhill, NH m. Sophia Kidder Bryant in Dover-Foxcroft, ME who had
several children including Bathsheba WESTON Clark. Am wondering if you know
anything more about the descendants of Naomi WESTON and Enos Clark as I am
trying to determine Ezra's forebears. Thanks!

I am looking for siblings/parents of Sarah LYON and her husband, Thomas
Levitt CLARKE. They were (we think) from Lancaster, England. He supposedly
(no confirmation yet) fought in Pennsylvania against the colonists in the
Revolution, liked the area so well that he went home, married his sweetheart
Sarah, and brought her back here.
We do know that they were here by the time of the 1790 Census, in the
Williamsport, PA area. We have tons of descendants for them, but can find no
siblings or parents (or even a solid location in England for either one of
them).
So, do any of you have a CLARKE/LYON connection, or even a CLARKE/LEVITT
(assuming that Levitt is a family name) connection anywhere in your archives?
My direct line:
Thomas Levitt CLARKE m. Sarah LYON CLARKE
William CLARKE b. 1797, Jaysburg, PA m. Martha RATHMELL b. July 4, 1799

| Subject: DEXTER FAMILIES IN KILLINGLY, CT, 1700'S AND 1800'S
|
|
| | Good morning,
| |
| | I have heard from several people that the DEXTER families in Killingly,
| CT,
| | from the 1700's on into the 1800's.... do not appear in the "Dexter
Family
| | History Book." (They are also listed in Danielson, CT, which is a
| | village within Killingly, CT.)
| |
| | I was wondering if anyone knew the origins of those DEXTER families.
| | Within the past six months*, the only information I have been able to
| obtain
| | are the following names:
| |
| | THOMAS DEXTER AND LEAH (PHILLIPS) DEXTER
| | mid-1700's Killingly, CT
| |
| | Their son,
| | WILLIAM DEXTER AND EUNICE (PARK) DEXTER
| | He born 1795 in Killingly, CT
| |
| | Their son,
| | JOHN DEXTER AND MARY ANNA (CLARK) DEXTER
| | He born 1837 in Killingly, CT
| |
| | ......... Thus far, I know of NO sons of this couple. And, I don't
| really
| | know much of anything about the early married life of this couple.
| |
| | What I do know is that they had a daughter, name unknown, who was
probably
| | born around 1870, not known where. (slim possibility it was Daisy
| | Dexter).
| |
| | On February 1, 1889, a baby girl was born to Miss Dexter. Without
| benefit
| | of marriage, and with shame from her upper-middle-class family, she
| | abandoned her baby in Boston, MA. The nurses at the hospital gave
| her
| | the name, DAISY WATROUS. ????????
| |
| | Mr. and Mrs. John Dexter might have been living in Boston, MA, during
the
| | 1870's. But, during the 1880's and 1890's, they appear to have been
| living
| | in a large house in Melrose, MA. At some point, Mr. and Mrs. Dexter
| | brought the baby girl back to their home. In March 1892, they adopted
| | her, and they re-named her to become, Mary Anna Clark DEXTER.
| |
| | Miss Dexter, the birth mother, was reported to have been killed in a
train
| | accident while traveling. She was probably around 18 to 20. This
| would
| | have been around 1890.
| |
| | In the spring of 1899, Mrs. Mary Dexter passed on. Later that year,
Mr.
| | John Dexter took his adopted daughter/granddaughter to an orphanage in
| | Boston and dropped her off. She never saw him again. He sold the
| | family home in Melrose, MA, and moved .... out of town! We do not
know
| | where he went.
| |
| | I am very interested in where Mr. Dexter, then in his late 60's moved to
| (in
| | 1900), and WHY he abandoned his granddaughter.
| |
| | (Mary Anna Clark Dexter remained living in The Temporary Home in Boston,
| MA,
| | until she was about 18 years old.)
| |
| | (I am also curious why NO other Clark or Dexter family member would take
| in
| | a very pretty, little 11-year-old girl. There pretty much HAD to
be
| | extended family in New England, someplace!)
| |
| | (I am also curious how the surname, WATROUS, came to be given to an
| | abandoned baby in 1889. My imagination tells me the real
birth-father
| | might have been a ... Mr. Watrous.)
| |
| | Thank you for listening, Betty
| |
| | (near Boston, MA)
| |
| | P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRAMMY
| |
| |

Hello! As per my other query (Dexter), I am rewriting a shorter version
to emphasize the CLARK family... and this is to be included in the Roll Call
for Northern Clark's.
In 1837 in Westport, MA*, MARY ANNA CLARK, was born. Westport is a town
near Fall River and New Bedford, MA, and not that far away from both CT and
RI.
According to her 1899 Death Certificate, her parents were James and Lavair
Clark of Westport, MA. This was in handwriting, so the mother's name
might have been Lavain Clark, or perhaps Lavinia Clark.
I know absolutely nothing about this couple. JAMES CLARK could have been
a newly married man, and thus born around 1817. Or, he could have been an
older man, perhaps born around 1800, or before.
No one seems to have this James Clark on their family tree. However, as I
understand it, there were Clark families all over New England at that time.
Mary Anna Clark, b1837, Westport, MA, married John DEXTER, probably around
1855-1860. John Dexter was born in Killingly, CT, in 1837. (Also known
as Danielson, CT.) Upon Mrs. Mary Dexter's death, she was taken to
Killingly, CT, to be buried. Either that Dexter families had their own
cemetary in CT, or the Clark family was not from the immediate area.
However, there are several Dexter children buried in Killingly, and I wonder
if Mr. and Mrs. Dexter had lost some of their children at early ages.
I know nothing about the early married life of John and Mary (CLARK) Dexter.
But, they could have lived in Boston, MA, during the 1870's. During the
1880's and 1890's, they lived in Melrose, MA.
On February 1, 1889, their adult daughter gave birth to a baby girl, without
benefit of marriage. She abandoned the baby in Boston, MA. The nurses
at the hospital gave her the name, Daisy Watrous. However, at some point
the baby girl went to live with Mr. and Mrs. John Dexter in Melrose, MA.
We just found out last summer that Mr. and Mrs. Dexter were her
grandparents.
Some time around 1890, their adult daughter was killed in a train accident
while traveling. (unknown name) In March 1892, the Dexter's adopted
their granddaughter, and re-named her, Mary Anna Clark Dexter!
Unfortunately, Mrs. Dexter died in the spring of 1899. During that year,
Mr. Dexter sold the family home and moved out of town. On the way out of
town, he dropped his adopted daughter/granddaughter off at an orphanage.
This 11-year-old girl never saw any family member ever again!
Happy Birthday, Grammy!
Thank you for listening, Betty

Hello,
I am searching for any Clarkes from the state of Maine who may have Archibald Clarke born about 1788 in Bath, Maine.
Archibald migrated to Cape Breton Nova Scotia, Canada sometime in
1818. He had a son named Henry who was born about 1831 in Canada and Henry had a son named George who married Margaret MacVicar on 17 Sept 1887. Anyone who can help?
Thank you for your time.

"Life is a story in volumes three, the past, the present, and yet to

Hello Fellow Clark researchers,
Here is another John Clark! This John Clark first appeared in Indiana. He
was married and had eight children, all born in Indiana, they were; Leander
1824, Burrows 1828, Able 1830, John F 1835, Elizabeth 1838, Benjamin F 1839
(my direct ancestor), Lestina 1842, and Adelina 1844. They were on the 1850
Switzerland, In census. Elizabeth was still alive. John was born 27 Nov 1797
supposedly in Genesee County, NY. Elizabeth was born in 1798 in New Jersey.
John was later found on the 1860 Iola, Allen, Ks census. No Elizabeth except
the daughter, aged 22 and Benjamin 20, and Adalin 16. That same year John
remarried to Eliza Jane Bode on 29 July 1860 in Kansas. Elizabeth evidently
died between 1850 and 1860. John and Eliza had two children, Horace G. and
Sarah. John, Eliza and Sarah all died in 1863, where is not known. John was
buried in a cemetery in Cotton, Switzerland, In. No knowledge of where mother
and daughter were buried. On the death of John's son, Benjamin, the death
certificate listed John as the father and said he was born in Genesee , NY.
Any information on John's parents, siblings, etc., will be greatly
appreciated.
