Hi All,
Just a comment -- they were also offered land in NC/Tenn. Take care - Emma
Benjamin Franklin CLARK b abt 1819, likely in or near Abingdon. Married
Paulina Galliker, I have them in Jefferson county TN in the 1850 and
1860 census, then they are in Sullivan county for 1870 and 1880.
Abingdon is about 30 miles from Blountville, TN in Sullivan county.
Children are: John F. b abt 1843, Thomas W. b abt 1844, Amelia Hannah b
1847 ( my grand mother) and Eliza b abt 1849.
Per notation in bible, Ben and his son, Thomas are b in Abingdon. High
on a Windy Hill lists Thomas, with accurate dates, but not Ben. Anyone
have any more info on this line? Hannah m a ROGERS, thus my surname.

I've known this for so long through research into my father's side that
it just occurred to me it might be a useful fact for others. After the
American Revolution, the new Congress had no money to pay its soldiers.
Instead it offered them land in northern NH, VT, and ME. Almost 75% of
my father's lines were in Massachusetts from the 1630's. If I'd
continued searching for them there, I'd have been horribly frustrated.
Fortunately, I was going the other way, from Maine relatives backwards
and knowing our roots were in MA.
It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Congress also offered land in the
sparsely settled southern colonies as well, such as GA and SC.
Also, these lands were in the boonies. Unless there was a dedicated
town historian, early births and marriages were simply not recorded.
That applies to every state when it's the frontier. When I wrote
various historical societies in Indiana about my great-grandfather, they
reminded me that the town in which he was born in 1859 didn't even exist
until 1836, and then it had about a dozen families. Record-keeping was
not a high priority when you hadn't built your cabin yet.
Oops, that's the bell. History class is over. Kathleen
One of my favorite scenes in "Cool Hand Luke" is when the evil prison
warden, played by Strother Martin, tells prisoner Paul Newman, "What we
have here is a failure to communicate."
It is not, however, one of my favorite things to fail at.
The fiche I bought are NOT actual IGI fiche. They're a catalog of LDS
film numbers and batch numbers relating to NY. What I hope to learn
from them is numbers I can type in the appropriate box, then put my
surname in the "individual box" and see what comes up. Remember that
trick we discovered some time ago? I was posting films I'd discovered
had lots of CLARK or LEWIS entries?
I have no idea what numbers to try for NY films/batches. With this
catalog, I should have. I'll test them and post them. Or, if you email
me, asking, "Are there any church records for Steuben Co.?" I'll check.
There aren't any real people on these fiche unless except for collected
genealogies/biographies. I haven't really gotten into them yet, but I
remember what catalog fiche look like from my more active days.
Sorry to disappoint those who sent me requests about specific ancestors.

Thanks to all who responded to my James & Martha Clark query. It is actually
a William who is my ancestor and I am searching for his parents. Mine was
said to be born 1844 and on his marriage license, he is shown as William H
Clark.
He married Susan Leach in 1863 in Alto, Howard Co IN and died there in 1876.
The most 'official' record I have of his death is a newspaper obituary. I
can find William and Susan in the 1870 Howard Co census, but haven't found a
Clark family in 1850 or 1860 with a William who fitted--except those who
also keep showing up on 1880 censuses after my guy died<G>.
My William's widow and family went to Kansas a couple years after his death.
William and Susan's children were named Lulu May b1864, Edward Hemlin b1865,
Earnest E b1867 and Oran Alfonzo b1874.
This James and Martha Clark in Randolph Co, IN were listed so near Susan
Leach's family in 1850 that I have suspected their son William could be
mine. But I keep hitting that brick wall in tracking them or their children
later than 1850. The data from the 1850 census is all I know about this
family.

Hi List,
One of my brick walls is Mary CLARK who probably was born c 1705 and m. 1731
at Groton David RUSSELL. She was designated as "of Littleton", but I haven't
been able to find the tiniest bit of information on her.
David & Mary named their children (Russell):
Oliver
Mary
Thaddeus
Lydia
Abel
Daniel
Isaac
Peter
Asa
If anyone has ANY ideas who her parents might have been, I'd love it.
Phyllis
just found another Clark connection for my line ;-).
My William McGregor's wife is said to have been Permelia Clark - I don't
have any other information on her personally and would like to find her.
William McGregor would have been b. c. 1772. He would have been married c.
1795 in either NC or SC. The family moved from SC to KY between Mar. of
1812 and Mar of 1818. Their children were: John (1796-1863), Samuel (1798
- 1851), William (1799 - 1830), James (1804 - 1865), Moses (1805 - 1860),
Mary "Polly" (1809 - 1865), and Dison (1812 - 1888).
Does this sound familiar to anyone or is anyone missing a Permelia Clark
who they don't know what happened to? Other linked families are Franklin
(of NC and SC), Davis, and possible Chappel.
Thanks

One of the problems I've had in researching the possibility that my
LEWIS and CLARK lines came to Indiana from New York is that I can't
figure out the LDS system of assigning batch and film numbers. I know
you're supposed to be able to use the online catalog, but the numbers
don't work for me.
I just bought a set of microfiche from ebay.com. It's the film numbers
for the New York civil and church records by county. If you know the
numbers, then you can type them into the appropriate square and type in
just the surname you're investigating. If they've uploaded that
particular film, you'll get results.
You all know my health problems. I'll go great guns for a day or so
then crash for 10 days. However, if you don't mind waiting a fairly
long time for an answer, I'll be glad to check the fiche for the area of
New York you're investigating. I'll also be posting film and batch
numbers that I know work.
Feel free to email me. Private is better, because I can save just your
request more easily. It may take me awhile, but I will try my darndest
to fulfill your request.

I am interested in knowing where this family was in the years after 1850. I
have so far been unable to locate a James & Martha Clark in any IN 1860
census; neither have I found a Martha Clark as head of house. If anyone has
information about this family, I'd sure appreciate hearing from you.
JAMES CLARK was born c1805 in North Carolina. He married Martha (--?--).
According to the census of 1850, he was a farmer who owned real estate
valued at $700 in 1850 in Greensfork Twp, Randolph, Indiana. The children of
James Clark and Martha all born in Indiana were as follows: JAMES was born
c1838, JACOB was born c1843,WILLIAM was born c1845, CAROLINE was born c1848,
and MARY was born c1849.

Hi All,
Just as an FYI - A recent TAG article, #203, Jan. 1999 vol. 74 No. 1, names
Farmer George's father (George, who else) as well as siblings and other
links. This is a one page article based on the discovery of Father George's
will in Wemsted in the parish of Watt-at-Stone, Hertfordshire dated 3 Jan.
1659/60.
"Deacon George Clark(e) of Milford, Connecticut and some of his
Descendants" by George Clarke Bryant; prepared for publication by Donald
Lines Jacobus. Ansonia, Connecticut: 1949 is available at NEHGS in Boston.
I descend through George 2's dau. Abigail.
