Hello James and List...,
Although I am not researching this line, my guess would be that these Clarks
are descendants of Edward Clark of Haverhill, MA. There were quite a few of
his descendants who settled in Hampstead. In fact, they may never have moved
to NH at all. They may have been some of the lucky few Massachusetts
residents who woke up one morning in 1741 and suddenly discovered they were
living in NH as a result of the adjustment to the border at that time.
Have you seen George Plummer Hadley's History of Goffstown? I grew up in
Goffstown, so I have a copy that I can check for either Clark or Hoyt
entries.

Clark Bagnall

Hi,
My name is Cyrus Henry Clarke. My family came to the colonies in 1637.
There were three brothers; John, Thomas, and Joseph. I am the grandson,
seven times removed, of Joseph Clarke. There may have been a sister, Mary.
John Clarke wrote the Rhode Island Charter and along with Roger Williams
and others, founded that venerable colony. In addition, John was the
founder of the Baptist church in the United States. I have much
genealogical information regarding these Clarkes, including an interesting
story or two. Also, I am looking for a long, lost sister named Margaret
Frances Clarke. She was born in Chicago, Illinois. I can be reached at
cyclarke(a)west.net.
Cyrus Clarke
I overlooked one tradition.
Capt Hathaway came from England abt 1806 and had a son John b New Bedford,
Bristol, Mass 1806.
The one thing that most of the older family members seem to agree on was
that he was called Capt. That doesn't necessarily mean he was a Captain of
a ship, or that he even was a seaman. It could have been a nickname.
Possibly it was others in the family that were the seamen. Traditions have
a way of getting all tangled up. Usually though when you get all through
there will be threads of truth here and there interwowen through the family.
And about John the son. What had happened to cause him to not want to
talk about his family or to go see them? Did they disown him or was it the
other way around?
We know that our John joined the L.D.S. church 1843 at the Hornby
conference NY and then went to Nauvoo with recommends with his wife Susan
(Clark) and then they left and show up in McKean Co., PA where they had
their 3rd son b. 1845. Susan's mother died in 1847 and her father Michael
Clark, brother Daniel, wife Julia Ann (Cummings) and children are there in
the 1850 census along with John Hathaway, Susan and children. Perhaps he
was disowned because of his religious affiliation.
We keep hopeing that perhaps a Clark descendant of Susan's brother's
family or perhaps some of the Wesley Rose or Isaiah Campbell descendants
will know something about John Hathaway. As John died 1862 while crossing
the plains to UT, Susan later on md Wesley Rose and they divorced and then
she md Isaiah Campbell in UT. He lived at least fifteen years at Port
Allegany, McKean, PA. You would think the Clarks would have some record of
Susan's husband. I have heard that there is a Clark Family Bible somewhere
of Michael and Matilda Clark. I wish it would come to light!
Hope this isn't boring to you, or taking up too much of your time. Does
any of it ring a bell?
Joyce

Hi Again:
I believe I've rounded up all the old traditions to go along with the one
I posted yesterday "Ad placed 1946".
John Hathaway b 1806 New Bedford, Bristol, MA md Susan Clark abt 1841 NY.
His father's name may have been Capt Brown who died at sea and his mother
remarried a Capt. Hathaway who adopted him. His mother's name may have been
Betsy.
His father was called Capt. Hathaway and his mother was Betsy and his father
died at sea when John was abt 17 or 18 yrs old. His mother md a Brown whom
John couldn't get along with and so John ran away to New York
His father was called Capt Hathaway and his mother Ruth. His father died
and mother remarried a Brown.
His father was called Capt Hathaway and his mother Ruth. His father died or
was lost at sea and mother remarried Brown and there may have been two more
children named Barker and Ruth.
Same story as one above only mother's name is Betsey.
Fifty nine years have passed since that ad (I posted yesterday) was sent to
New Bedford and all these years gen. researchers have tried to find
connections to these traditions. But, they didn't have the internet, so you
never know. Or, maybe its time to move on. What do you think?

Hello CLARK researchers:
I'm trying to find out about:
Mary CLARK b.prob.bef.1740 who m. William SHEPHERD
The would have lived in NY/PA/MD/VA/WV. Sorry to be so vague. This is a
tough one.
I'd be glad to learn of any such combination of names in the early
to mid 1700's from these states. If you have this combo I sure would like
to know more about them and their kids.
Thanks,

Good morning from Australia,
I am descended from John and Louisa Clarke (nee Selby) of Bedfordshire,
England, through their daughter Elizabeth. They show up in the 1851
census for
that area. Elizabeth married William Joseph Donelly in 1852 and sailed
to Australia where they reared their family and lived a long life.
However, the 1851 census shows siblings of Elizabeth and I would like to
make contact with descendents if possible. Would also like to get back
further but have my doubts if this is possible.

My grandfather was born in Tennessee or Mississippi and moved to Texas
around Strawn, Mingus and other small towns in Palo Pinto County, Texas.
His name was Murphy Clark and was called "Doke". He was killed in the mid
to late 1920's. He was under the age of 40. He was married to Cora Anne
Stallings. People talked about his family traveling all over in the
entertainment business of some sorts. Everyone was quite old when I found
them to interview, and all had a different story. I have very little
information to go on and with a last name like Clark, it has not been easy
to find connections. Any information would be appreciated.
Here is a partial line:

MASSACHUSETTS
THE NEWBEDFORD TIMES 1946
A descendant of whalemen, now a resident of Idaho, currently is seeking
information relative to her New Bedford ancestors. In a letter to the
Standard-Times, Mrs. Ellen LeCheminant of Box 11, Chester, Idaho, explained
that her maiden name was Hathaway and that her great-great grandfather was
reported to have been a whaleman.
My great-grandfather was supposed to have been born in New Bedford, Mrs.
LeCheminant relates "and his name was John Hathaway. He was born about 1807
and his father was a whaleman, supposed to have been lost at sea.
We have searched for a number of years, but haven't been able to find
any trace of this man. We do not even know his first name. I read a story
written by one Captain Musser (probably Captain Mosher), about a Captain
Hathaway. He stated he obtained his information for the story from the
whaling logs of New Bedford.
We have searched the records of Dartmouth, but have found nothing. We
have about 60 families but cannot make the connection. This Captain
Hathaway 's wife we believe, was Ruth. His son John was born about 1807 and
we believe they had two other children, a boy and a girl.
LOG DATA SOUGHT
" We would appreciate it very much if you would search these whaling logs
of the years between 1800 and 1815 and see if there is any information of
this Captain Hathaway and his family."
Hampered by lack of Captain Hathaway's first name, (there are between 50
and 60 Captain Hathaway's recorded in New Bedford whaling history) William
H.
Tripp, curator of the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, was unable to supply
definite identification. A search by Mr. Tripp of vital statistics of the
period also failed to reveal specific information.
A search of Starbuck's "American Whale Fisher," however for the period
1800-15 revealed several ship masters named Hathaway in the listings.
Because the name was so common in maritime circles of the time, even
Starbuck does not have their first names.
NO REPORT GIVEN
In May 2, 1803 the ship Herald, ---------Hathaway, master, arrived here
with no report of the voyage given. The same ship and master were reported
sailing for the Brazilian whaling ground Aug 5, 1804; the ship was reported
owned in Fairhaven. An unnamed ship, possibly the Herald, with a captain
named Hathaway, was reported arrived in New Bedford with 1,200 barrels of
oil from the South Seas as of August 1806.
In May, 1808, a Captain --------- Hathaway sailed from this port as
master of the whaling schooner Cornelia, for the Atlantic grounds. On July
3, 1812, Samuel Rodman's ship Diana, with a captain named Hathaway, was
reported arriving here.
Final mention of the name during this period is in 1815, when two
masters named Hathaway are listed for the whaling schooner Liberty, which
arrived in both 1815 and 1816 having "lost boats and recieved damage in a
gale.
I am searching for information on Elizabeth (Betsy) Clark, b. 1812 in
KY. She was married to John Hagerman on 12 Dec 1842 in Nelson County,
KY. Is anyone familiar with her family? Thanks for any information you
can share.
