settled on a land grant in what is now Pickett County, TN about 1801.
There is some evidence that he was born in VA and that his father or
grandfather was awarded the land grant for service in the Rev. War.
Thanks, Linda Marrison, 65 Skyline Lane, Huntingdon, TN 383844

Anyone interested in the WITT family, please review the following web
site.
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/i/n/m/Gloria-kay-V-Inman/
The Descendants of Edmond WITT will remain there for only a couple of
weeks because it is not a primary line, but an allied line that I would
like to contribute in gedcom file format with anyone who is seriously
building a WITT database.
If, after viewing the data at the site mentioned above, you would wish a
gedcom file of that data, please email me and I shall send it by return

Hi,
Here is the reference I promised. I'm sending you some stuff by snail mail,
but didn't copy this.
From Kegleys Virginia Frontier, p 296
"By the royal proclamation at the peace ( close of French and Indian War ],
no settlements were allowed to extend beyond the sources which empty
themselves in the Atlantic. In Carolina the case was different, for there
large tracts of the best land as yet lay waste, which proved a great
temptation to the northern colonists to migrate to the south. Accordingly,
about this time above a thousand families, with their effects, in the space
of one year resorted to Carolina, driving their cattle, hogs and horses
overland before them"-----Hewatt-----History of South Carolina.
Withdrawals here, 1758-1768. From County Court Proceedings:
August 20, 1760, Henry Brown's wife, Alice, in Bedford (County)~land sold to
Dr. Walker
Nov. 25, 1766, James Clark, no inhabitant (His house is vacant, his land is
empty)
Later, I will send you the Jameses in NC.
In Mechlenburg County, where I am, There was one, in 1797and 1798. But this
is not likely to be our original one from Va, but possible.
I have a will abstract for William, probated 1794 with a son Jesse and a son
James. These are apt to be the ones who went to Ky.
Please pass this on. Thanks

I would appreciate any information on Lewis CLARK. The first record that I
have of him is in 1772 in what was then Colleton County, South Carolina. In
1773, my ancestor John SMEDLEY bought land from him on the Little Saluda
River which was later in Edgefield County, SC, and on the Broad River in
Craven County.
Later on, another SMEDLEY witnessed a deed for Lewis CLARK and his wife
Catherine. This was in Edgefield County, SC. This Lewis CLARK may have
been the son of the first Lewis CLARK.
I think that CLARK and SMEDLEY may be connected and I would be willing to
share any information that I have.
Thanks,

Mar 1736. Family info says:
Terrance Clark (parents unknown) and family came originally from County
Down, Ireland. They settled first in New Jersey, then moved to western
Pennsylvania near the headwaters of the Ohio River. He moved his family
from PA when Martha was 8 years old (1781). He landed in Natchez, MS in
the
Mississippi Territory and bought land in Adams County several miles east
of
Natchez. They lived there a while, then moved to St. Landry Parish, LA.
After a short time they returned to their land in Adams Co., MS. St
Landry
Parish, LA was sometimes called "The Opelousas Country" at that time
since
it was in Spanish Territory.
Note: Spanish records show that Terrance Clark and Daniel Clark were
witnesses to a number of documents!! Could they be brothers or
cousins???
Anyone on the list researching this family? Anyone have any info to

I recently started an EARLY CLARK project list to try to get as
much
info out to people on the early emigrants to USA. (I also have a selfish
reason since I'm trying to identify my own George CLARK in the
Lumberland,
Sullivan County NY area in the early 1800s). I consider myself a
compiler rather than a researcher on these various
Early CLARK lines. I do not have any link (yet) to any of these lines.
It's certainly easier for me to cut and paste information that others
have
researched rather than doing the research myself. I have borrowed
extensively from others, but have listed these in my notes so you can
contact the individuals or WWW sites for more info.
I try to identify each branch with a contact so that others
researching the same branch can make contact and exchange data directly.
Ideally, I would like to have 4 to 6 generations before 1800 with all the
names, dates, & places identified so other researchers can have a
reference point. I am not trying to have a complete Clark lineage beyond
1800, (with the possible exception of NY for selfish
reasons!). With that said, can you supply any more data on your
Clark line (or
