I am trying to locate a Jack or Jim Clark that married an Elizabeth
Brinson. These were the parents names that was on my first great
grandfather death certificate. James Spruell Clark was born 18 Mar 1856
LA. I have never found any census record showing a James to any Clark in
LA. James married Martha Elizabeth Smith b/1857 LA. They had ten children
born in La and TX. I believe the last three were born in Shelby Co., TX.
I have been told they were around Bienville Parish, LA but can not locate
them there. Can any one help me out on these family?
Colleen

The end.

Pat
In the name of god, amen! The 29th day of July, a. d. 1771, I John Graham,
being sick in body but of sound mind and memory, thants to god almighty, and
call to remembrance the uncertain estate of this transitory life, and that all
flesh must yield to death, when it pleaseth god to call, I do
make, constitute and ordain and declare this to be my last will and
testament in manner and form following, revoking and annulling by these
presents all former wills and testaments, either written or by word of mouth;
this to be my last and none other.
I first recommend my soul to god, my savior and redeemer, and my body to dust,
to be decently buried , at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and
appointed, and as to my worldly goods which god has granted me, I leave and
bequeath in the following maner, viz:
to my oldest son, Lanty, I devise and leave my plantation whereon I dwell, to
him and his heirs forever, upon his allowing my beloved wife living off it,
with what stock she pleases to keep; also
she said Lanty is to give six pounds to James Graham's son John, and six
pounds to his brother John's son John; also to my daughter Anne, I leave
thirty pounds, besides my roan horse and chest drawers; to my beloved wife,
Elizabeth Graham, I leave 20 pounds, my bay mare, two cows, her choice of the
flock, and all the household plenishings; to Jane Lockridge I leave fifteen
pounds; to Rebecca, my buckels, and to her son John one cow; also to Robert
Graham half the mill that belongs to me; to my two daughters Florence and
Betty, ten pounds each; to my two sons, Robert and John Graham, ten pounds
each; to Rebecca, Lanty's daughter, I leave ten pounds; all the rest of my
estate remaining to be enjoyed by my wife whilst unmarried, but if married to
be divided equally between my daughters Flora, Jane, Betty, Anne, and if she
never marries, to be left by my said wife to her four daughters here named at
her death. I also appoint my beloved wife and son, Lanty Graham, to be my
executors. I hereby revoke all other will and testaments, appointing and
making this my last.
In the eleventh year of our Sovereign Lord George, King of Great Britain, and
c. and in the year of our lord, 1771. signed, sealed and published and
pronounced in the presence of
John Graham ( seal )
Witness:
Joseph Robinson (thought to be a son in law married to Rebecca)
John Kinkead (later Kincaid married Anne, daughter of John)
John Armstrong
At a court for Augusta county, November the 19th, 1771, This last will and
testament of John Graham, dec. was proved by the oath of John Kinkead and John
Armstrong, two of the witnesses thereto, and ordered to be recorded.
And on a motion of Lanty Graham and Elizabeth Graham, the executors therein
named, who made oaths according to law, certificate is granted them for
obtaining a probate thereof in due form, they haveing with security entered
into and acknowledged their bond according to law.
Teste: Wm. A. Burnett, clerk
In addition to the above will Augusta county records show that in 1763 John
Graham deeded each of his three sons John, James, and Robert, considerable
quanties of land, on the calf pasture river and it is to be presumed that he
shared a like portion of his estate to each of his daughters.
The original farm of 696 acres lies on both side of the calf pasture river; is
mostly bottom land, and is located about four miles below Deerfield and 25
miles N. E. of Staunton.
On another adjoining tract of land owned by Graham there was a grist mill
built by him about 1755. There is little doubt that this was the first mill
built in this section of the country.

The first immigration of the Grahams to this country, of which we have any
account, occcurred about the years 1720 to 1730, the exact dates are not
known. It is acording to David Graham, who wrote the Graham History in October
1899 that one Michael Graham settled in Paxtong Township, Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania around 1720-1730 and that he was a direct descendant of the Earl
of Montrose, who was beheaded. It is also noted that other members of the
same family, kith and kin also settled in this country, among whom were John
Graham who settled, it's believed, in Pennsylvania and later moved to the
Great Calfpasture River, Augusta County, Virginia. Between 1740 and 1750.
Found the purchase of a tract of six hundred ninety-six acres of land in the
year 1746 from John Lewis and John Paxten. It is noted that John Lewis was the
first settler in the territory which later became Augusta County, Va. He was
the father of General Andrew Lewis who commanded in the famous battle of Point
Pleasant in 1774.
John Graham reared a family of four sons and five daughters on the banks of
Calf Pasture River.
I am continuing this Summers, Clark genealogy, but I want you to know that I
have not changed anything. So if the words are not spelled correctly, its just
the way it read. The whole genealogy contained 21 pages. because it was double
spaced.
Hope you are enjoying. Please print and keep or file on your computer. Also
you may read and print from the archives. The reason I am telling you this is
that I will not be keeping it on my computer.

Spouse Notes:
the name of Clark means a learned person- that is, one who could read and
write, which was a rare accomplishment in the olden times. As a surname, Clark
and Clarke appears frequently, from LeClere; and medieval bearers of the name
were very proud of it. The name took several compounds which are: Beauclark -
the good Clark; Mauclerk - the bad Clark; Kenclerk- the knowing Clark; and
Petyclerk - the little Clark. the name of Clark, in its various forms, is one
of great antiquity, having probably been used in Great Britain as early as the
eleventh century. Since the name implied literacy, its use as a name was
eagerly coveted; hence it frequent use.
Many people added "le clerk's to their names. The "let' was finally dropped,
and only Clerk was left or, as it was pronounced, Clark. The final "e" is an
addition in later times.
In the fifty years following the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth and the
English in Virginia, many persons of the name of Clark left England for the
New World. Some of them, like Richard Clarke, who was a passenger on the
Mayflower, left no children, but it was the good fortune of others to found
families who have been active
in the early New England settlements and the Virginia pioneers who so bravely
established homes in the wilderness.
There is a very strong tradition which says that our paternal ancestor who
came to this country, emigrated from England to Virginia, and that his name
was John. He came from the County of Kent, England and settled at Jamestown
between 1630 and 1635. tradition is that he settled on the James River and
became a planter; that either on the vessel coming over, or soon thereafter,
he met, and fell in love with a Scotch girl, Hannah Wiatt, who became his
wife. John died in Jamestown c. 1645.
The pioneer ancestor of the Monroe County, (West) Virginia line was James
Clark of Augusta County, who according to tradition, was the son of John
Clark, third in descent from John Clark the immigrant F-100. James CLARK
James Clark settled in Augusta County, Virginia in 1740. He was one of William
Beverley's land agehis name frequently appears in the records of the county.
He owned a large plantation (800) acres some nine miles southwest of staunton,
near the old Glebe Cemetery, and in th area of the old North Mountain Meeting
House. The land is called "James Clark's Old Plantation" in the Augusta County
Courthouse records. The old home was demolished c. 1928.
Records show that James was a member of Captain John Willison's Virginia
Militia of 1742; and that he also served his country in the French and Indian
War in 1758. (Hening, Volume 7, Augusta County Section).
James married Elizabeth Summers, who died in 1781. James died in 1778; his
will dated 20 Aug, 1774; proved 17 Mar 1778 is recorded in Augusta County Will
Book 6, Page 4, at the Courthouse in Staunton, Virginia.
All the children are listed in Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in
Virginia 1745-1800, Vol. III, p.150 Will Book No. VI (p. 4), by Lyman
Chalkley Vol. III, Genealogical Publication, Baltimore, Md. James Clark's
Will.
James Clark purchased from William Beverley, Esq. on 14 May 1746, 380 acres of
land "... on the head branch of Middle River in Beverley Manor ". He later
transferred, by deed in Augusta County, Virginia, this tract of land to three
of his sons as follows:
20 Aug 1765 to John Clark eighty Acres . . ." Deed Book 12, p. 108.
20 Aug 1766 to Samuel Clark eighty-four Acres . . ." Deed Book 13, pp. 45 and

Hi, Joe. Some of the information I have in my database on
William Clark (b. ca. 1609) came from the information you
have posted to the mailing list, as well as collecting bits
and pieces from other geneologies and other sources.
Although I have not researched the vital records in
Connecticut and Massachusetts personally, the information I
have collected agrees with the information you sent to
"wjs."
I thought there was a possibility that you limited the
information that you posted to the group to limit the size
of your email response, based on "wjs's" inquiry. I just
wanted you to know that I have additional information on the
following people in the first few generations of this line
if you or others are interested:
Ebenezer Clark, b. 18 Oct 1682 (marriage, children, etc.)
Noah Clark, b. 28 Mar 1694 (marriage, children, etc.)
Samuel Clark, b. 23 Oct 1653 (marriage, children, etc.)
Thomas Clark, b. 1690 (Only additional information I have
on Thomas is that he married Sarah Strong.)
And, of course, there is more information in later
generations. Please let me know if there is any particular
information or generations you are interested in.
Last, but most importantly, thank you very much for all the
help you provide to Clark researchers. You can't imagine
how much your work is appreciated as some people, like
myself, don't say anything until there is a reason to
respond to one of your messages.

Hi..Here's the file... Do you have a source for the name "Strong" for
the wife of Wm. ?
How about the dates for the kids.. I seem to have slightly different
ones. Can you correct my data with a more accurate source?
