Alice,
Thank you for your interest in my search for Moses. I'm just now getting a chance to answer.
Actually, I believe Moses was born in PA. The 1850 census states PA. One of the descendants says VT is correct but gives no back up. One of the census for a son of Moses says VT. However, I'm sticking with PA about 1810. A large number of settlers came from Vermont about 1800. I have looked at tax roles from 1775. Lycoming used to be Northumberland Co. Also I have contacted the Lycoming Historical Society. They sent me some property records, but nothing that really fit. No church records found. Moses had 6 sons. He and Elizabeth lived in Huntington, Luzerne Co. for several years. I wrote there but no luck. I thought probably one of the sons would have the father's name and have checked, but none of the names show up. I have followed every Clark I can find. I am in touch with all the Clark descendants in our line. They are no help. This is truly a brick wall, but I'm not giving up!!

Subject: Re: [CLARK] VT Clarks to PA
Virginia,
Your information below is sketchy, but maybe I can help. I have CLARKs located east of yours in the areas of Wilkes-Barre and the larger city of Scranton. Remember that PA is a still a "commonweath" being one of the original 13 colonies. It is also a state in that it has a capital city with the accompanied governmant characteristics. This duality in record keeping can be a hassle to search.
You state that Moses Clark was born in 1810 in Vermont.
You state that there is no record of his parents in Lycoming, PA...but states that Moses's birth state is Vermont and birth year is 1810. In 1810...births were still home deliveries by midwives and the local town doctor when you lived in rural small towns. Going to a hospital for births were not commonplace due to a myriad of factors: weather, season of year, proximity of a larger city with hospital facilities, transportation availability or enough time.
VERMONT is not that large of a state. You might want to try Census records for the years of 1830, 1820 and 1810 VERMONT. Look for the CLARK surname then look at the first names. Remember...that Moses CLARK would not be listed by himself until 1830 and afterwards.
So...look for Moses Clark as a 20 year old in 1830 who may or may not be on his own then. He might have been still living at home before leaving Vermont for PA.
In 1820...Moses Clark would have been about 9 or 10 years old and listed under his parents...with siblings, if any. 1810 and 1820 census' would be in the state of Vermont.
US Census of 1810...there are three possibles: 1. he was not born in time to be recorded in that census taking? (2) Moses Clark would be listed as newly born? or (3) would be at least 3 - 6 months old if born prior to the actual Census taking month?
You state that Moses CLARK is listed in a the census records for Lycoming, PA in 1850.
This means he migrated from Vermont to PA probably when he was about age 18-20. This would mean that you would need to look for Moses Clark in the US Census' for Lycoming City/County PA of 1840 and 1830.
Moses Clark would have been turning 40 or was 40 years old at the taking of the 1850s census. I am assuming you noticed that under his name was his wifes' name...Elizabeth Hunt. If so, did you notice what the census listed as her age? She probably was close to Moses'...or at least 10 years younger give or take. This would place her birth between 1810-1820, and her age about 30-40 years old herself. Since most women were married between 16-21 years old...this would place their marriage about1830. Most marriages took place in the bride's birth town church...so could try for a MARRIAGE record between 1830-1840 in Lycoming, Lycoming county. Since the 1850 PA Census does not list any children...it can be assumed that any children were born after 1850.
Being Lycoming is both a small village/town and a county...try finding out where the county seat for Lycoming County is located. The county seat holds the local area vital records from all the burgs, villages and towns that are within the borders of the whole county. Also, the county seat is required to send records to the nearest major large city. Most likely to Harrisburg, which Lycoming is north of.
In my search for my father's maternal CLARK Mother...Jean Caroline CLARKE, born in1912 in Wilkes-Barre / died in 1941. My father's birth father, (William Page Hamilton) born in 1903 in Beaver Falls, PA... died in June of 1938. Is buried there.
Neither his parents were issued official birth certificates by the "state" of Pennsylvania. So, vital records of birth were filed and recorded to the area local county seat, archives of the local church within their parish/town and/or at the city of birth's town hall. It was not until mid 1938 that the US government in Washington determined that the Commonwealth PENNSYLVANIA was now considered a TRUE STATE...and as such...any and all vital records were now registered as official documented records prior to 1938 had to be re-recorded and issued in time to comply with and for the upcoming 1940 census
Hope this helps some. Sorry for the dissertation. A CLARK descendant...Alice Metzloff of Ohio

I am not connected to the Clark family but only giving back for a genealogical kindness shown to me. I'd like to share a few details of a newspaper article about my great grandfather and two men that drowned near Cape Charles in Virginia.
My great grandfather and a Mr. Carroll Clark (both of Whitestone, Va) were on the fishing vessel of Mstr. Joe Kellum, the Rappahannock. It was 21 Nov. 1931 and they were apparantly heading back home in a bad storm. At the mouth of the Potomac River the boat sank. All 3 men died. Tragically, their bodies were not found until February the following year. Additionally, they had been buried by the Coroner at Weirwood before the investigation had concluded their identities.
The body of Carroll Clark was discovered eight miles from Cape Charles on a farm at Wilkins Beach. The place was owned by a Mr. Rufus Custis and it was Custis who came upon the body of Mr. Clark.
My great grandfather's body was found two days later about 5 or 6 miles from Mr. Custis' farm. And, Mstr. Joe Kellum had been found dead near Reedsville a week before Carroll Clark was discovered.
My great granduncle and several other men left on a boat from Whitestone to Cape Charles after being notified by the Sheriff of Northampton. After making the positive identifications, the men brought them back home to thier families for proper burial.
Mr. Carroll Clark left behind a sister, Mrs. John Douglas and a brother, Robert. Mr. Clark was buried at Whitestone Methodist Church.
The article goes on to detail the burial of my great grandfather. He was a waterman on the Chesapeak Bay and left behind a wife and 6 children in White Stone, Virginia.
Hope this will help someone in thier research.
Deborah

I'm looking for any Clark family that may have been in PA about 1810.
According to the 1850 census, Moses Clark was living in Lycoming, PA. and was born in 1810. I've found no record of his parents, but it is said that they came from Vermont. Moses married Elizabeth Hunt. The Hunt records are no help. I have researched every Clark in Lycoming. Does anyone have a Clark family which might have been in PA around that time?
