I'm searching for information on my 2nd great grandfather, John Clark b. abt 1826 d. 1876 (m. 1849 Elizabeth Lowther), they had about ten children. Mary Adeline Clark; Rosetta Clark (Vining); Ruell Clark; Delila Clark; Francis (Frank)
Clark; Uretta Clark (Blessing); Joanna Clark; John Clark Jr.; Margaret Clark; Sarah Clark. I think they lived mostly in the Meigs and Ross County area of Ohio. I'm looking for his father and mother's name. I can trace the line from my grandfather Calvin Clark; Frank Clark and John Clark and it ends.

Alice,
Thank you for your interest in Moses Clark. Of course I have worked with the PA census from 1790 for all the Clarks. Also local church records etc. As for VT., I have not found any single person with the Moses name.

Subject: Re: [CLARK] VT Clarks to PA
Virgina,
Hello from Ohio. Sorry to take so long responding. Seems like I just get started and then have to stop. Anyway...just a few thoughts that may help regarding Moses Clark:
1. CENSUS IS TAKEN EVERY 10 YEARS. HOW OLD WAS MOSES IN THE1850 Census Pennsylvania, Lycoming/Northumberland county? If I am correct...Moses would have been probably in his mid to late 40s. Using his birth year of 1810...this would place his marriage to Elizabeth Hunt when he would be about 22-25 yo and approximately in the1820s-1830s. Try searching backwards for Moses/Elizabeth CLARK as a couple (with or without children). Holding that marriages tended to take place in the brides home town, within the 1820-40 Census years.
I am thinking that you could find Moses by himself living on his own or still living at home still with parents/siblings in the 1810 and 1820 PA CENSUS depending on the month taken.
2.To account for having "dual" birth states:
Assuming you find Moses in PA as far back as 1810...TAKE NOTE OF HIS AGE AT THIS TIME.
The 1850 PA states his birth year as 1810 in PA, right? I am thinking he would be between 6 months - 10 years old at the time when the family stopped to settle in this Lycoming/Northumberland PA area. This would have been well in time for the PA census taking, thus recording him as being born in PA.
FOR VERMONT...Notice the listed Month and Day of WHEN the PA 1850 Census was taken.
Theorize that he was possibly already BORN BEFORE the taking of the Vermont Census of 1810 as well.
Try to find the VERMONT US CENSUS for 1810. Take note of the MONTH it is recorded in. Remember...travel anywhere was by horse and wagon. Vermont to PA was over mountainous terrain and taking into account weather for determination of WHEN a move was made. People planned moves between late Spring and early Fall seasons in order to take advantage of the best weather possible and for settling in the new area well before the winter season set in. Moses age could be from newly born to at least 6 months old at this time...and thus was in time to be recorded, and then the family left Vermont within the weeks after this Census taking.
3. NEWSPAPERS ARE A WONDERFUL SOURCE OF INFO. Try the same years of 1810-1890 in PA. They ran the same info as today...births, deaths, marriages, etc.
Hope this helps you some. Have a great day. Alice of Ohio

Her name was Esther Ann Clark. Esther was born in 1827 and I am not 100% certain that it was in Kinderhook. I found that information through The Transactions of the Rockefeller Family. Esther married Jonas Rockefeller in 1847 in Shodack (sorry spelling). They moved to Schenectady where they had the following children: Spencer, Herbert, Charles & Ardella. I do not know where Esther or Jonas are buried. I do know that she passed away in 1877 in Schenectady. I also know that she had a sister, Tharina Clark Atwell, who lived in Schenectady as well.

Please tell us more about her so people might be able to identify her. I for one am investigating Clarks in the area. What was her name? When would she have been born? Where were they married? How do you know she was from Kinderhook as compared to someplace else? Which church did they attend? Did she and her husband stay in the area or move? Where were they buried? What were her children's names?
