Perley CLARK, my grandfather, was the son of Ida Thurston & Ephraim CLARK. Sorry there was no Perley THURSTON mentioned in the original posting.
Ancestry.com offers free access to their military records until D-Day, June 6, 2007. Under both the WWI & WWII Draft registration cards you'll find info re: a Perley Clayton Thurston b. in VT in 1896.
Another source you might locate through your library would be the Thurston Genealogies by a Thurston. Some of the information is incorrect but you might find some new info. Good luck.

In your email you said that Maggie may have been born in 1894 and reletives said that she and her family hid on the Trail of Tears the went to TX. if your family is saying that she was on the Trail of Tears the dates are wrong. The Trail of Tears was between 1838-1839. I had family tell me the same thing about my husbands family and dates just did not match.
I opened your email because my GGGGrandmother has Indian Characteists and thought you and I may have had a link. We do not know anything about her parents, on census says tht she was born in TN, the another says hse was born in KY, then lived and married in IL, Montgomery Co. and that she was born around 1813.

I definitely am interested to see what you have regarding Perley Thurston because what I am reading is possibly that is my grandfather we are talking about. The only thing I know of is that my father (Gerald Thurston) grew up in Vermont (hardwick). I sure hope you are still reading this because this is very interesting. Please feel free to email me regarding this.

You state that you think Maggie was born in 1894, and that Maggie and her family hid along the Trail of Tears, do you mean that they are saying she was part of the Trail of Tears? If they are and she was actually born in 1894 she was born quite awhile after the Trail of Tears. Trail of Tears was between 1838 and 1839, so if they were saying she was part of the Trail of Tears she could not have been born in 1894. A lot of people think that the Trail of Tears were later than it actually was, I was told the same thing about my family but dates just did not work out.
Now if she was born at that time and lived in OK it may have been easier to trace her if you looked at the listings of the Rolls, but since she was in TX she would not be listed because they had to have been in OK to be listed.
I checked your email out because my GGGGrandmother was a Clark and her characteristics follow the American Indians, and we do not know much about her parents except that she lived and maried in IL, but was born in either KY or TN, one census says one another says the other.

I am trying to locate my maternal great-grandmother, born as Maggie Clark/Clarke who was supposed to be 1/8 (?)Cherokee blood. Maggie's mother's name was Zoa (sp?)and she may have died when Maggie was about 3 years old. Maggie had a brother named Jack.
I believe that Maggie was born 12/28/1894 near Smelter Hill (near Joplin, Missouri) and died in August 1976 in the city of Perryton, TX in Ochiltree County (in the Panhandle of TX). She married a Clarence Whitaker, then a Clarence Shepherd. I believe Clarence Shepherd was born 12/05/1895 and died Sept. 1983 in Perryton, TX. I remember going to Maggie and Clarence Shepherd's home in Perryton probably around 1968 to 1973.
The children born of these two marriages were:
Daisy Whitaker Egan Grover, Leonard Whitaker, Lela Blanche Whitaker Harbour Evans Davison Campbell(my maternal grandmother), Lila Whitaker, June Shepherd Sutherland, Charles Preston Shepherd, Wanda Shepherd DeArmond, and Hazel Shepherd Taylor.
In one census report, I saw the Shepherd name also spelled as Sheppard.
Other family members have told me that Maggie & her family hid along the Trail of Tears, then fled from Oklahoma to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and I suspect, may have tried to pass as white.
I have other information, but no actual birth certificates, etc. yet as I have only recently started researching the Cherokee connection seriously. I have other anecdotal information as well as information I have tracked down in the census websites, etc.
I hope there may be a connection to your family and to hear from you either way.

I have two original tintype photographs encased in paper/cardboard sleeves, with information written as follows: "John W. Clark, born Ohio, died 1878, buried New Virginia, Iowa, grandfather of Benjamin Clark Hilliard" and "Sarah Ann (Williams) Clark, born 1821, died 1921 - grandmother of Benjamin C. Hilliard". I'd like to get these wonderful old pictures back to descendants or family members. Photos were taken in about the 1865-1875 timeframe, and they each look to be about 50-60
I found them as John W. (39) and Sarah (38) in the 1860 Stark Co., IL census, with daughters Euphemia (16), Mary V. (13), Alice A. (7) and Emma E. (3). In 1870, family lived in Indianola (Warren Co.) IA, with girls Alice (17), Emma (12) and Georgette (11). By 1880, Sarah A. Clark lived with daughter Euphemia Hillard (36) and family including Benjamin C. (12). Further research on Benjamin Clark Hilliard showed him to have been a Colorado congressman.
Get back to me at margerice(a)prodigy.net if you are related to this Clark family.
