Thank you so much for responding. I also found James and Mary in 1850 Constantia,Oswego,New York--James Clark age45 NY/wife Mrs. Clark age41 NY/son Osseday(?)age17 NY/son Wallace age19 NY/son Gardner age14 NY/son Alexander age12 NY/dau Malinda age11 NY/son Ashley age10 NY/son Earl age3 NY/son Jared age1 NY------- But I also found them in 1850 Camden,Oneida,NewYork except that Osseday,Wallace,Gardner, and Malinda are not there and Ashley is 5 instead of 10. And I have found them in 1860 Constantia,Oswego, NewYork--James Clark age55 NY/wife Mary age51 NY/son Gardner age24 NY/son Ashley age14 NY/son Earl age12 NY/son Andrew age4 NY/--They are living next door to Wallace Clark age24 NY/wife Luecy age17 NY/dau Evangeline age2 NY---Then I have found James and Mary in 1870 Alma, Gratiot,Michigan with sons Earl age22 NY and Frank A. age14 NY. I think that maybe Frank A in 1870 is Andrew in 1860. I have found that the census can be very confusing most of the time.

Hello. I also have a "brick wall," James CLARK / CLARKE, and he was born around the same time. My James was born in the 1790 to 1800 timeframe - somewhere !
My suspicion is that he was from a New England family, or had familyl here. But, he could have been born in NY.
All we know about him is that he was living in Little Compton, RI, ~1827, and married in the next town, Westport, MA, in 1829. He fathered a daughter there in 1836, and seems to have disappeared during the 1840's.
(He was not known to have lived in RI a long time, and it is not thought that he died in the 1840's.)
I call him my "concrete-block wall put together with reinforced cement."
Looking at your message, I see that your James CLARK was born ~1806 in NY. And, the 1880 census shows him with a wife, Mary, and a son, Gardner, b~1834.
As with census data, we don't know whether Gardner was a child of both James and Mary, or just James from a previous marriage / relationship.
With my James, we have no idea how old he was when he married in 1829, but the woman he married was born in 1800. She was the widow, Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) LAVARE. And, we don't know whether he had a previous marriage before 1829. And, we don't know about his life after he "disappeared" in the 1840's.
(He might have been the James CLARK who got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, in 1845. That ship was heading to the Indian Ocean and James "deserted" in Australia. But, James also could have "left town" in the 1840's and remarried - someplace else !)
This might be just an FYI for you.
I know from being on the Lists and Boards for 7 years that obtaining birth/marriage/death records in NY are difficult. So, someone should advise you how to find out about them, or how to find out where in NY this family lived.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. I am descended from Mary Anna CLARK, b1836, in Westport, MA. She married John DEXTER in CT and lived there for most of their married life. But, about 1886 they moved to Melrose, MA. In 1892 they adopted a little girl. That little girl was my grandmother. I believe that John and Mary were her grandparents (no proof).

In 1999 - 2001, I posted the following query on rootsweb. My sister-in-law, Sherrie Wieland, also posted a similar query. Since that time, we have both changed email addresses, so I will update and repost the message, in the hope that perhaps there are other descendants of William McKender Clark and Lydia Carmichael "out there" or Vanschoick or Fife descendants who might have additional clues to help us determine the name of the father of William McKender Clark.
We believe our CLARK family came to Parke Co, Indiana from the area of Bourbon Co Ky. before the Parke Co. courthouse fire (1832) destroyed so many records. We are trying to find the name of the father of William McKender
Clark. William was b. Bourbon Co., Ky 1805 and came to Parke Co., IN in about 1823. His father must have died prior to 1830 census. We now know that the parents of his wife, Lydia CARMICHAEL, were William Carmichael SR and Lydia Gossett. We think William and Lydia were marr. in Parke Co., Indiana, on 3 Sep 1826. William's mother's name was Ruth(y).
In 1830, Hezekiah Vanschoick and wife Sally sold land to Ruth Clark of "Parke Co" -- this implies Ruth was already in the county and a widow at this time. In 1835,
Ruthy Clark sold her land in Union Twp, Parke Co to her son William Clark of the same place. William and wife, Lydia immediately sold the land to Samuel Galey. Witness on this transaction is a Jacob Clark. Also, Hezekiah Vanschoick's wife's name was Sally Clark and they married in Mason Co Ky 1798 (Nicholas Co. formed from this county.. most of these lands were originally in Bourbon Co where our Clark's originated from). The witness Jacob Clark was married
to Dorcas Fife 1815 Nicholas Co Ky. She died 1852 and was bur. in the McNeil Cem, Racoon Twp, Parke Co.
Sally Clark Vanschoiack and Jacob Clark were siblings, children of John Clark of Nicholas County, KY.
We are wondering if perhaps Lydia may have been a Vanschoiack, born during the 10 year span that the family was in Maryland. Sally Vanschoiack Clark was a daughter of John Vanschoiack. This family originated in Monmouth County, NJ and apparently followed the migration of the early Methodists converts out of Monmouth County, NJ to Maryland at about the time of the Revolutionary War. Ruthy apparently was born in about 1782 and this is during the 10 span where the John Vanschoiack family resided in Maryland, prior to coming to Kentucky. This family remained in the Mason County, KY area (near to Nicholas and Bourbon Counties). The children born in New Jersey and those born after this 10 year gap are included in the history of this John Vanschoiack family, but those who may have been born during this "gap" are missing. This is simply a question and a possibility only.
Perhaps Ruth's husband, ? Clark, could have been a son of John Clark of Nicholas County, IN and thus another sibling of Jacob Clark and Sally Clark Vanschoiack? John Clark did have a son named John, mentioned in the 1812 will of John Clark of Nicholas County, Kentucky, but this John Clark could have died during the War of 1812. However, his whereabouts after the time of the will are not known. Most of the children of John Clark, of Nicholas County, KY, ended up in Parke, Putman or Montgomery Counties in Indiana, very near to one another.
William McKender Clark, wife Lydia and his mother Ruth, removed to Knox Co, Il by 1840 - Ruthy died in 1842 and
was buried in the McAllister Cemetery (along with two of William and Lydia's children) in Knox County, IL.
William became a Methodist circuit rider minister. He and Lydia's histories are mentioned in the Methodist church history of Illinois; but these histories do not give parentage.
The only hint about William's father is that in the 1880 census, William McKender Clark reported that his father was born in New Jersey and his mother (Ruth) was born in Maryland. On Ruth's tombstone it was inscribed that she was a "native of Maryland."
Lydia Carmichael Clark's siblings, Thomas Carmichael purchased land in Parke Co 1829 as did Jonathan Carmichael in 1835. It appears Thomas Carmichael had a daughter Lydia
Ann who marr. Andrew Foster 1852 Parke Co.
My sister-in-law, Sherrie Wieland is also helping me with the Clark-Carmichael research. We are attempting an April trip to Indiana to do research. I hope someone
may be able to help us with additional clues. Thank you, Laraine Clark
(31460 SW Isle Way Lane, W. Linn, OR 97068).
Note: Update of 6/22/99 --
Mrs. William Carmichael Sr. died in 1828 in Parke Co and is buried in the Miller Cemetery there. The sons of this family were: Thomas, Jonathan, John and William, as well as an Elmsley. This William Carmichael Sr. was married with no children in 1800 in Guilford Co NC. By about 1810, he had relocated to Orange Co., near Lost River, Indiana. he is listed in Orange Co., IN 1820 census as William "Kermicheal" and the children seem to match the
sons and daughters that we find in the Parke Co. Carmichael family. This family appeared to have arrived in Parke Co in the 1820's. Thomas and Jonathan died in 1852 and 1844 respectively. John moved over to Putnam Co., IN (Clinton
Twp.) Our Lydia Carmichael married William McKender Clark in about 1826 in Parke Co and moved on to Knox Co IL by the late 1830's. LOVE to hear from someone in this line.

Hello possible cousin....
My maiden name is Clark. Born in Poplar Bluff, Mo. father was born in Hamilton County, Illinois. He has Clark ancestery from North Carolina, thru Tennessee and some branches were in Kentucky, then into Illinois. His grandfather or great grandfather went into (I believe Lee County) Iowa and died there.
I don't have my family tree info in front of me right now, and the only Clark name that comes to mind now is Charlie Clark who married Melvina (Vina) Nelson. I believe he was also born in southern Illinois, but migrated down into the Missouri bootheel. This would have been in the mid to late 1800's. Charlie had a Clark sister who lived in Dexter. Her married name escapes me now. He and Vina had a pretty large family
so, although Clark is a very common name, we just may connect. Please tell me what you can about your Clarks.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Subject: [CLARK] Things my Daddy told me
Samuel Kenneth Clark was my father, b March 25, 1901 I believe. He had a
sister and brother. His sister's name is Thelma and she has been gone
sometime as well. She has a daughter in her 80s and another in her 60s as I
am.
. His brother's name is Leonard and he has been gone a while.
I thought perhaps if I told some of the things my father talked about when
I was a child, other Clark relation might remember them.
Dad's father's name was William Wood Clark. He had two families. My
father and his sis and brother were the first. I believe my grandmother's
name was Sarah Fox, but I may be wrong.
They lived in Kentucky most of the time and it is there most are buried in
the Fox Cemetery. It is located either next to or across the road from the
"ole home place"
They lived in Providence, Kentucky and my dad and his brother were sent to
the coal mines at a very young age, as I was told by my cousin. I wasn't
aware of that until just recently that they sent small boys into the mines.
Seems kind of bad, but kids had lots of guts then and helped out at home
much more than children do now. My dad was a very happy person, so it must
not have hurt him much.....lol.
I don't know what my grandfather's vocation was, but must have been
farming or mining. They were not wealthy people.
I can still remember some of the little games my dad played with me, like,
William Trim-a-Toe. He also told some good scarey stories.
I want my big toe .......was one of them.
If any of these things sound familiar, please write back.
