Hello,
I haven't posted in a while, but I received new information last week from a
researcher on a Newfoundland List. So, I'd like to post the information,
and add a few more facts from my past postings:
The NFLD researcher wrote that a James CLARK and a John
CLARK are mentioned in wills which involve.. Little Compton, RI.
One has already been mentioned on the List in regards to the will of David
TOMPKINS and his sister, Rhoda, of Little Compton. In my opinion, and
that of another researcher, this is .. Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) (LAVARE)
CLARK of Westport, MA.
The other will I was told about last week starts out:
"To grandson Samuel Beiley son of William etc." And, it ends, "To my
daughter, Ruth, late deceased estate left by her son. Son, Thomas Bailey,
executor.
Witnesses: To 3 sons in law Daniel Tabaor? Jabez Reynolds and
James Clark. Wm . Weeden
John x Bailey, his mark.
......
8th of the month called May 1734"
The other will starts out:
"Judith Head of Little Compton. Page 467
To Daughter, Judith Tripp, wife of Jacob Tripp, one silver dollar and a
great chair. To two daughters, Mary Wilburn and Judith Tripp, 3 large
feather beds. To granddaughter, Judith Clark, wife of John Clark, my
warming pan and largest iron kettle ......"
And ends with:
"My son Benjamin Head to be executor.
Judith x Head, her mark.
Witnesses: Thomas Cornell, Stephen Cornell, William Allen, Proved
April 7, 1802"
This NFLD researcher also mentioned a "death record:"
James S. CLARKE, 31 yrs., Nov. 14, 1852.
..
The man I am looking for is James CLARK/E who probably was born in the
1790 to 1800 timeframe. We do not know where ! He was reported to
have been living in Little Compton before he moved to Westport, MA, to marry
the widow, Mrs. Rhoda LAVARE, in 1829.
This James is one of the "concrete-block walls put together with reinforced
cement" on my family tree !
James and Rhoda CLARK/E had only one child that we know of, Mary Anna
CLARK, born in Westport, MA, in 1836 or 1837 (saying this from memory).
(If they had another child earlier, it did not live.) But, by the time
of the 1850 Census, James was not living in the home of his wife, Rhoda,
his daughter, Mary "Molly," and his 3 LAVARE step-children.
Karen in CT (not on Lists right now) had told me a few years ago that he
might have
been the James CLARK who got on a ship in New Bedford, heading for the
Indian Ocean, and he
"deserted" in Australia (1845).
One of the things which we don't know about James is whether he was married
before he married Rhoda. The James S. CLARKE who died in 1852 would have
been born in ~1821. And, that could have been a year when "my" James
CLARK could have had children from a first marriage. I have always had
"a hunch" that Mary Anna CLARK grew up to have CLARK relatives around her !
FYI: Mary "Molly" CLARK married John DEXTER, b1833 in Killingly, CT, and
they might have married in Stonington, CT, around 1855. But, they lived
most of their married life in Killingly. While in their late 50's, they
surprisingly moved to Boston, MA, and in 1892 they formally adopted a baby
girl. They changed the name of the 3-year-old to Mary Anna Clark DEXTER.
This little girl grew up to become my grandmother. (I have posted many
times, and more of the story is in the archives from past years.) My
"hypothesis" is that the married daughter of John and "Molly" had an
"unwanted pregnancy" in the summer of 1888. Because Abner and Clara YOUNG
were an important couple in Killingly, I think her parents moved to Boston
and arranged for the baby to be born up here. So, the couple who had
adopted my grandmother were her actual grandparents.
We will probably "never" know who the birth father was. But, I have
another "hunch" that the YOUNG descendants of Abner .. have the information
"put away in boxes." I had a stroke of good luck last summer and found
out where adult-children of Genealogist, Winthrop YOUNG, were living.
Unfortunately, they chose not to respond to the letter I wrote them !
FYI: John DEXTER was the son of Marvin DEXTER and Mary ALLEN, and Marvin
was a son of Joseph DEXTER and Mary ALLEN - one of 3 brothers who left
..RI..
to go to Killingly around 1790. (Hope I am remembering these names
correctly.)
Thank you for your time.
MERRY CHRISTMAS !
HAPPY HOLIDAYS !
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
Dear fellow listers,
I have been looking for this family now for quite sometime. We were in the
military together in the late 60's. A group of us are thinking about
getting together sometime if we can find some of our group.
Edwin A. and Karen were from Gallipolis, Ohio and had 2 daughters. I am
sure that Edwin stayed in and retired from the military as he was a career
man then.
Any help in helping me locate him will be greatly appreciated. I am from nw
Ohio.
Thank you,
Gary
1796: 5 November 1796, the home of Noah and Crissie Ann ROSS CLARK
burned. Two of their children, names not given, perished in the
flames. (From Revolutionary War Pension Claim R. 2007 1/2 as given
by Noah CLARK on 1 September 1841 as extracted by E.W. MORGAN,
Acting Commissioner, Rev & 1812 Wars Section in a letter to R.D.
FINK, 89 St. Marks Avenue, Brooklyn, NY on September 18, 1928)
Question: Is there a newspaper report or official report of this
terrible event? Evidently no newspaper in the area at that time but
the neighboring counties often reported such things. York Co?
German language newspapers/periodicals? What about funeral or death
notices?
On One World Tree John F Clark and his wife Bessie Varick are listed.
Unfortunately, there is not name given as to the person that posted the
information.
I am familiar with this family and would like to contact anyone knowing
them. John Frankin Clark, Jr, married Elizabeth "Bessie" Varick. They
lived in Nutley, NJ - Bessie's parents lived in Hudson Co, NJ. Jophn
and Bessie had one daughter - that is another thing that is confusing -
the person posting this shows a male "Living Clark".
However there is enough correct information this person obviously knew
something.
Can anyone help me?
Floreda
A few of us are looking for a male that carries the Clark surname, and
descends from the following Clark line, to take the DNA test for the Clark Family
DNA project.
We are willing to pay half of the cost for a 12 marker test if you descend
from this line of Clarks:
John Clark (born abt 1761) and Ann Barclay (? Barkley)
Richard Barkley Clark (born abt 1787) and Hannah Williamson
George Washington Clark (1807-1871) and Malinda Ward
James Gibson Clark (1810-1879) and Sarah J. Neal
Richard S. Clark (1814-1887) and Martha A. Neal
This family has roots in Fayette County, KY and Salem (Washington Co.)
Indiana.
If you qualify for this offer, send me a list of your direct Clark
ancestors. If approved, we will pay half of the test cost. My wife descends from a
sister of George, James, and Richard. Another person involved descends from
Richard S. Clark--she is a female and can't take the test.
I am the project coordinator for my family line (Scott) and will be glad to
answer any questions about how DNA testing can help you find a common ancestor
with someone who has already been tested. Thanks, Charlie Scott
