I've "rescued" an old Autograph Album which I believe belonged to Ernest
Edmond ATWOOD. The book is dated from 1886 to 1911 and includes mostly
family entries including poems and autographs. The entries include:
Byron MCINTIRE of New Portland, Maine, Oct 6, 1886 "brother"
Samuel C. ATWOOD of New Portland, Maine
Lizzie B. ATWOOD of New Portland, Maine, October 10, 1886 "mother"
Lyndon E. KNOWLES of Cambridge, Maine, Jan 23, 1911
Irene E. WILBER of Madison, Maine, Aug 29, 1911
Cassius W. CLARK of Pickney, Maine, Nov 30, 1911
Helen Mae ATWOOD of New Portland, Maine, Aug 3, 1911 "daughter" age 14 years
Myra S. ATWOOD of New Portland, Maine, Oct 9, 1886
Nettie E. ATWOOD of Embden, Maine, Apr 18, 1888
Clayton L. ATWOOD of New Portland, Maine, Mar 11, 1911 "son"
Howell ATWOOD of New Portland, Maine, Aug 1, 1909 age 12 years
Nellie Mae of Embden, Maine, Aug 19, 1888 "your wife"
Based on limited research, I believe that most of the people mentioned in
the book are related in some manner. Samuel being Ernest's father, Irene
WILBER likely related to Nellie Mae WILBUR ATWOOD, Cassius W. CLARK married
to Jennie WILBUR likely a relative of Nellie's, and Myra and Nettie sisters
to Ernest.
I'd like to see that the book is returned to family. If you are a member of
this family or know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley

Hello,
I'd like to know if anyone has any information on a George CLARK or CLARKE
who originally lived in southern New England (MA?). I am told that he
moved out to CA and once there owned an Orange Grove.
Since my grandmother knew of him, this must have taken place right around
1900, or between 1900 and 1920.
I thought this might be a way for me to trace the CLARK/E family I am
researching. George CLARK might have had a brother, William CLARK who
remained living in MA. They could have been born in the mid-1800's.
My grandmother was born in 1889 and was a foundling in Boston, MA. In
1892, she was adopted by John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER. In 1899, Mrs.
Dexter died and Mr. Dexter went to a hospital, and she was orphaned again.
She lived in "Homes" until around 1909. In 1911, she married, and on the
marriage certificate, she listed her birth-parents as: William and Mary
CLARK of Boston. We do not know who this couple is.
The "distant cousin" I found in CT believes that Mrs. DEXTER was the
birth-mother, and that William CLARK .. possible an Uncle .. was the man who
"got her pregnant." :o( ... Mrs. DEXTER's father was James CLARK
who lived in Little Compon, RI, in the 1820's (as adult), and then married
in 1829 in Westport, MA. He had his daughter in 1837, and left on a
Whaling Ship in 1844, and "deserted" in Australia in 1845.
We cannot trace James CLARK's family of origin and we do not know how
William and George CLARK are related to him. James might have had a
previous marriage, and possibly they were his sons from previous marriage.
(He married a young widow.) Or, perhaps William and George were nephews
to James. ???
(Since James CLARK was a Mariner, he could have come from Canada or from
other US States .... to RI .. around 1820, and possibly could have been
born in the 1790's.)
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

Hello everyone,
Well I am truly amazed. Over the last few days, I have recieved
over 200 emails reguarding the Monacan and Cherokee issue, from members of
all the various surname's listed on the roll. And the post are still coming
in.
I promise that each and everyone WILL be answered. And if I can't give you an
answer to your questions, I will either direct you to or tell you were to get
answers. It may take me a week or so to answer them all, "but you will get a
reply".
I can't tell you how much your comments mean to me in many of those post. I
would like to THANK all you list administrators for allowing me to bring this
issue to the attention of your subscribers.
I will be leaving your list at the end of the day, and I have really enjoyed
my visit here.
Folks, in reguards to the info supplied, please just do what you feel is the
right thing to do. If you know or were told that these are your Cherokee
family members, say so. If they are Monacan and you can prove it, say so as
well.
Saying it to me is fine, but the folks who need your letters are the Bureau
of Indian Affairs.
I know their site is down right now, due to the Cobell Litigation, but please
keep trying. The US Senate link is also down, but I believe that is because
our country is on high alert.
I have also spoken with Chief White Eagle, who sit's on the Council of
Chief's in Missouri and The Western
Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. He has sent me the address below for you to
write to.

Hello list members,
Thank you for all your post. I am new on this list and I am
only trying to make folks aware of the situation with the Monacan Indians and
Cherokee Indians geneologys, and because your surname is mentioned within.
I personally have nothing to gain by either tribe. I am a Lenapah and my
grandmothers people were of the Delaware Nation Indians, who were adopted by
the Cherokee.I don't have any cards , nor do I want any, I have no Chief and
no I don't live on a reservation. (for those of you who asked)
I will tell anyone on any list, I am more then willing to help folks find
their NA roots.
I don't care what tribe they are. I have been helping people for almost 4
years now.
My specialty is the Cherokee Freedmen. And I work very hard at all I do.
In reguards to the Monacan-Cherokee families, I have had the oppurtunity to
know and speak with both sides.
I personally have nothing against the Monacan Indians. But I will say that if
they are not Monacan and are Cherokee, then they need to seek Cherokee tribal
status and not Monacan tribal status.
I do not want to hear the words: "Well so what if they are Cherokee?"
This has been said to me about 5 different times from various people.
Well I think the Cherokee would have somthing to say about that.
I have watched comments for months on both sides and after seeing the
comments made below by a major supporter of the Monacan, I can only conclude
that there is real basis for the questions reguarding their Monacan tribal
status. We now have their own supporters stating that the geneology is
inaccurate.
<A HREF="http://www.joepayne.org/mallory.htm"> http://www.joepayne.org/mallory.htm</A>
http://www.joepayne.org/mallory.htm
I would like to add that I really don't think the fault is with the Monacan
families. I believe the fault is with Dr. Peter Houch and his book "Indian
Island". The Monacan Indians of Amherst VA, recieved their state reconition
because of the book. Well not only are their documents to show that an
article in the book has been altered, but again we have a Monacan major
supporter saying he believes they made a mistake.
I believe many of these families may have been mislead. I personnally want to
reach out to these families and help them find their true roots.
I am more then willing to work with any Monacan family of the tribe. If this
was a matter of just a few geneologys being mixed up, then that would be one
thing. That I think could be resolved. But it is simply not the case. And when
a supporter of the Monacan says, that the marriage of Robert Johns and Mary
Indian are incorrect, well what is left?
You then have a tribal roster of names claiming to be their desendents, which
just isn't true.
I wonder if it is true that Dr Peter Houck started his publishing Co with the
making of this book?
I wonder were the proceeds of his book went to?
Who were the original people who got these families together for interviews?
I wonder what connections Dr. Houck has to politicians in the state of
Virginia?
Why are the Monacan trying to by-pass the Bureau of Indian Affairs, as other
tribes have had to do?
So as you can see, my research into all of this is far from over. Too many
questions to be answered.
I will be leaving your list in on Sunday, but I welcome any questions,
concerns, comments you may have on this issue. You can contact me at:

Hello everyone,
It has been stated by members of a Cherokee Tribe that some names
used on the Monacan Rolls are in fact Cherokee and not Monacan.
I have looked at many documents in the last 6 months and I now ask that you
review the names of these Monacan's.
Questions to be asked are:
Are these your Cherokee family names?
Can you show any proof that they are Cherokee ?
Do you want the Monacan to claim your familys heritage, if they are Cherokee
and not Monacan?
What are you willing to do about it?
And most important: Are others so much in need of tribal status or a tribal
card, that they believe you would allow them to use your family names,
without proper and accurate geneology?
The question has been put to me like this from some folks:
So what if they were Cherokee ?
Well I will let those of you out there who are Cherokee answer that
question!!!
On another note, I know of several names on this Monacan list that are in
fact Cherokee. I have spoken to family members and the documentation will be
provided to the BIA and folks in Washington whom have an interest in all of
this.
It was in my original opinion that these Monacan were actually Freedmen, and
Melungeon and that this was a back door attempt to gain status as a tribe.
My opinion has changed a little since a few months ago. I still believe that
many were Freedmen. But I now believe that they were the UNREGISTERED
FREEDMEN who never applied to the Goverment or the Bureau of Indian Affairs
for benifits.
I also believe that there are former slave owning family's who are also
involved with Virginia getting state reconition for these folks. I also
believe that there are "factions" of the Melungeon's at work with all of this
as well. My work with checking the Monacan is by no means gonna be over any
time soon.
But for the time being, I only ask that you look at these names and if "you kn
ow" this info is incorrect, then do your part in making it correct.
Think about this!! What would your ancesters say, if they were alive today
and knew that their names were being used by folks living today wanting
tribal reconition, with their CHEROKEE birthright?

Hello everyone,
It has been stated by members of a Cherokee Tribe that names used on
the Monacan Rolls are in fact Cherokee and not Monacan.
I also
believe that there are "factions" of the Melungeon's at work with all of this
as well. My work with checking the Monacan is by no means gonna be over any
time soon.
But for the time being, I only ask that you look at these names and if "you
know" this info is incorrect, then do your part in making it correct.
Think about this!! What would your ancesters say, if they were alive today
and knew that their names were being used by folks living today wanting
tribal reconition, with their CHEROKEE birthright?

Hello fellow listers,
I am trying to get info on Hannah Clark,b.1782 in ??,
married Samuel Haskins,1804 in Harwick, d. Hardwick-
1846.
She may have had a brother named Seth.
This family may have originated in Rochester, Plymouth
County and there may have been another Hannah in
Rochester as this one is sometimes reffered to as
Junior.
This individual is documented in the book "History of
Hardwick" by Lucious Paige and in my family history.
Does anyone have a mystery Hannah Clark floating
around in their files?
Thanks in advance for all help,
Carl
