While checking out the CLARK Surname I found so many Alex and Alexander
CLARKs that I thought I would test the waters for any theories of why there
are so many??? I could understand James Clarks or William Clarks numbering
many but Alex and Alexander don't seem like a very popular name...
My Alexander S or A CLARK (both listed as acceptable on his Civil War Record)
was born 4 Dec 1825 in Cumperland PA... apparently moving to Cincinnati
very early on and marring Louisa DRUCE in Cincy on 24 Apr 1858... I don't
know his parents but wished I did... any help would be appreciated...
Thanks A Million - David G. Moore - IN
Hello,
Yesterday I was very pleased to hear from someone .. who provided me with
the information .. about my long-lost CLARK couple ... As it turned out ..
I was looking for the wrong ..wife .. I had not understood the
information on a death certificate .. and thought I was searching for ...
James and Lavair (?).. CLARK ..
I now know that in 1829 in Westport, MA, James CLARK .. married .. Mrs.
Rhoda LAVARE .... So, "Lavair" wasn't her given name, it was her
surname .. And, Rhoda's maiden name .. was Rhoda MANCHESTER. ...
So, the couple I am looking for is ... James and Rhoda CLARK ..
This also clears up the Census information I found which showed Rhoda Clark
and Mary Anna Clark living in Westport in the 1851? Census .. As they were
the only people in the household, James Clark must have died during the
1840's.. Rhoda was probably around 50 years old .. and Mary Anna was 13
..
On the marriage record .. James CLARK listed that he was from .. Little
Compton, RI ... If he was also born .. around 1800 .. I was wondering
if anyone knew which family he might have come from ..
..Mary Anna CLARK (b1837 MA) .. grew up to marry John DEXTER (b1837 CT) ..
probably in Killingly, CT ...
In 1892, when they were 55, John and Mary DEXTER adopted a baby girl.
They renamed her to .. Mary Anna Clark Dexter .. This is a very long
story .. but, for now, I'll just mention that, when the younger Mary DEXTER
married in 1911 ... she listed her father as ... William CLARK ... ...
I have not yet figured out my grandmother's .. very large, complex
"genealogy jig-saw puzzle," ... but a guess is that .. James CLARK probably
had a William CLARK .. as part of his family ..
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. The baby girl born in 1889 was "a foundling" and became a "ward of
the State." .. She was adopted by this 55-year-old couple, and I have made
an "educated guess" .. that they were her grandparents .. But, in 1899,
Mrs. Mary Dexter died, and John Dexter took his "adopted daughter" to "The
Temporary Home" in Boston. She probably lived there from Age 11 to Age 18
...
Young .. Mary DEXTER .. would have had ..as her great-grandparents .. James
and Rhoda CLARK .. from Westport, MA, and William and Eunice DEXTER of
Killingly, CT .. ... (Mrs. Mary Dexter was buried in Killingly, CT, in
1899... but my grandmother didn't seem to have any memory .. of visiting
that area.)

I am looking for any descendants of Anthony and Catherine Clark. Anthony was
born in Ireland in 1759 and died in Lawrence County Ohio about 1833. His
son, Anthony, Jr., is the one I am mostly interested in. The last clue I
have as to his and his wife, Isabella, is a land sale document dated 1850
that indicates that they were living in Sangamon County, Illinois. Anthony's
daughters were married to men named Brammer, Mann, and Murnahan. If anyone
has any information on any of these ancestors of mine, please contact me at
AFC1948(a)aol.com. Thanks in advance
I am looking for any information on this couple Delilah Clark who married John Petty on June 13, 1834 in Chatham co. NC. Delilah was born in Hillsborough, Orange co. or Chatham co. NC. on Jan. 15, 1819 and she died in Maine Prairie Township, Stearns co. Mn. on Jan. 12, 1912 and John Petty died there on Dec. 7, 1877 and both are buried in the Maine Prairie Cemetary, John Petty was born on Dec. 19, 1807 in Orange or Chatham co. NC. John and Delilah left North Carolina in 1840 for Indiana and they farmed in Noble Township, Shelby co. Ind. from 1840s to 1865 or 66 when they came to Maine Prairie in Stearns co. Mn. they had 13 children the first 3 born in NC. the others born in Ind. and Mn. The family story in the Petty family was that Delilah was related to George Rogers Clark and William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame. My great great grandfather or a twin brother was named Lewis as a middle name among John and Delilahs children. Delilah Clark Pettys mother was listed as Rebecca !
Pearson and Delilahs parents were both listed as born in NC. in her death record. Any information on this couple and these two Clark and Petty families would be appreciated very much. Thank you. Duane McKenzie. mailto:dmckenze@hutchtel.net
