What follows is a transcript of an obituary:
>From the Wheeling News Register January 16, 1891
“DEATH OF MRS. MARGARET HALL.
Mrs, Margaret Hall, one of the oldest, if not the very oldest native-born resident of Wheeling, died at her residence, No. 65 South Broadway, yesterday morning, aged 88 years. Deceased was a sister of Captain William Clark, of Bridgeport, and widow of the late William Hall, for many years Tyler of the Masonic lodges of this city, and a well-known auctioneer a generation or so ago. The family resided on Chapline street, just north of Market alley, for many years and deceased will be recalled by many of the older residents of the Second ward. For the past twenty years Mrs, Hall has resided on the Island. One of the most estimable of ladies, her death will be regretted by all who knew her.”
Comments:
Based on research that has been done in other sources on Margaret Clark Hall and her family, the following comments can be made:
1. Her place of birth differs in various records. 1850 & 1870 US Censuses say she was born in Virginia. The 1860 & 1880 US Censuses say she was born in Pennsylvania. Death record indicates she was born in Pennsylvania.
2. Her husband, William Hall, was born about 1798 in Virginia and died 26 February 1856 in Wheeling.
3. Her brother “Captain William Clark” was a steamboat pilot. He was living in Wheeling during the 1850 & 1860 US Censuses and in Pease Township, Belmont County, OH during the 1870 & 1880 US Censuses. He died in 1900 (I have also posted a transcript of his obituary to this list).

**************************************
What follows is the transcript of the obituary of William Clark (1814-1900), a riverboat pilot who, while living in Bridgeport, Belmont County, OH at the time of his death, was originally from Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.
Wheeling Daily Intelligencer Newspaper, Friday, January 5, 1900
“CAPT. WILLIAM CLARK DEAD,
He Was a Native of Wheeling, and Was Known as an Old-Time Pilot on Western Waters.
Captain William Clarke, a veteran river man and one of the oldest residents of this vicinity, died at an early hour yesterday morning, at the residence of his son, Squire J.E. Clarke, in Bridgeport. He was in his eighty-sixth year and until a recent date had enjoyed good health unusual for one of his age. His rugged frame was stricken with paralysis about a week ago, since which time he grew gradually weaker until the close came of a long and honorable life.
The deceased was a native of Wheeling, and was born on North Main street, in 1814. When sixteen years of age he began running on the river, and for about fifty-five years as a pilot and captain, and previously in minor capacities, he travelled on the Ohio, between Pittsburgh and Louisville principally. Eighteen years ago he forsook the river for a life of retirement. He moved from Wheeling to Bridgeport about thirty-four years ago, and since the death of his wife, he made his home with his sons. Surviving him are seven children, six sons and one daughter, as follows: J.E. and W.H. Clarke, of Bridgeport; Harry, of Chicago; D.B., of Wheeling; Bently, of Freedom, Pa.; James, of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Chris Young, of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Only one son is engaged in the river business, Captain Bently Clarke, of the Dick Fulton. The funeral will occur Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, from the residence of J.E. Clarke, in Kirkwood. The deceased was a member of the Kirkwood Presbyterian church. The interment will be at Mount Wood cemetery, this city.
Captain Clarke was a member of the Septuagenarian Club, of Wheeling, Bridgeport and Martin’s Ferry, many of the members of which have died during the past two years.”
NOTES REGARDING THIS OBITUARY:
1. I have typed this exactly as written – including the inconsistency in the surname (spelled CLARK in the heading and CLARKE throughout).
2. William Clark (1814-1900) and his wife Ruth Clark (1818-1888) were buried at Lot A 35 in Mount Wood Cemetery.
.
Paul, you and I have corresponded before on our possible Clark connection
(mine is Lewis / Louis Jefferson Clark, supposed son of Henry Clark of
Wheeling).
Did you ever see the submission made recently by an heir of Henry Clark
(Tim Clarke), a
document handed down by his someone in his family of Henry's adventures
getting over here from Europe, and mentioning many of his kids, etc.? It is
fascinating, even if he isn't your man. This is just a great story for
anyone to read, really, but particularly if you had Clarks in Ohio Co. WV:
