Thank you! for any help. Louis/Lewis Jefferson Clark is an interesting
guy. He drove a stage on the Zane Trace (or a wagon--one census), that's
how he ended up in KY where he met his wife; and also the run from
Zanesville to Washington DC. Fascinating history when you read about
traveling on the Zane back in its heyday.
He was in his late 40s when he served in the Civil War, and I do have those
papers, but nowhere does he mention his birthplace. In one census he is
"Jefferson Clark" and one of the two times he served in the C.War the
paperwork must have gotten screwed up and he served under that name. He is
insisting in the paperwork that I have that he is the same man, and that he
could provide a bunch of people who would say he has always been in Guernsey
and Tuscarawas Co. OH (one county grew out of the other)--that would be
Dennison where he spent much of his life and died.

Being myself an Illinois Clark with ties to South Carolina, my ears always
perk up when I see an Illinois Clark! I do not however, see any names that
fit with my Clark/Gillham line. My questions are: where in IL and what
Clark relatives??....could be important to the 'Lewis and Clark' lines.
Remember that William Clark in a book that I have stopped off at 'Madison
County IL (before dropping into the Missouri River on the trek into the
unknown wilds of the west) "to visit relatives...."
