Hello listers,
I have been searching for the parents, siblings and decendants of my great
great grandfather William Lyman Clark. I can go forward but have problem going

William "Lyman" Clark was 44y in the 1850 Kennebeck Augusta ME Census (b) ca
1806 but according to his tombstone b) 1811
d) 1888 in Cabell Co WV.
In the 1850 Kennebec, Augusta Me. Census he and his family were living in a
household with two other families as follows:
Roll:M432_256, Page:59, Image:120, Line: 29-42
(I have been searching for a connection between the families but to date
only possibilities and have * annotated where I have or may have information.
If anyone can confirm or add to, please do.)

Being myself an Illinois Clark with ties to South Carolina, my ears always
perk up when I see an Illinois Clark! I do not however, see any names that
fit with my Clark/Gillham line. My questions are: where in IL and what
Clark relatives??....could be important to the 'Lewis and Clark' lines.
Remember that William Clark in a book that I have stopped off at 'Madison
County IL (before dropping into the Missouri River on the trek into the
unknown wilds of the west) "to visit relatives...."

Thanks Ruth. This Clark family has been my genealogical brick wall. Little
by little, however, I am making small discoveries that may be getting me
closer to finding John's family. Paul

There is documentation on this Henry Clark who served in the Revolutionary
War (altho if you write to the DAR they can't find him), and who lists a
number of children in his will. One of his wives was Nancy Sinnick, and I
can't think of the other one.
In any event, he left a number of children who are mentioned in a will. My
father in law always speculated that this last child, Louis Jefferson Clark,
was Not included in the will because he was only 6 mos. old when Henry wrote
the will and that his father assumed he would be cared for by his mother.
I don't know if that idea holds water or not. It seems odd to me that the
father would provide for all of his kids, except the one least able to
provide for himself--even if infants often did not make it past the first
year of life, it seems to me that he would at least mention him.
So that makes me wonder if the family story is true--or if is Another Henry
Clark, of if there is a generation missing in there between Henry and Lewis
/ Louis J. Clark.

I know I have corresponded about my Clark from Wheeling, Ohio County, with

I am looking for information on my ggg-grandfather, John Clark who was born in Ohio County ca 1810-1817. He was a tailor and married Mary Crumbaugh in Franklin County, KY on 28 Feb 1833. Mary died about 1857 and John Clark appeared in the household of his daughter, Alice Clark Tutt, in Cheney's Grove Twp, McLean County, IL in 1860. John Clark was a corporal in Co. F, 116th Illinois Vol. Infantry in the Civil War. Unfortunately, he did not apply for a war pension (might have answered some questions) so not much else definite is known of him after that.
I do have a few clues that lead back to Ohio County, as follows:
1. John and Mary Clark had at least 8 children, several of whom were minors in 1860. After Mary died, John moved to IL, but the minor children don't appear with him. They appear to have been sent to relatives to live. For example, one son, Lazarus Powell Clark, may be the Lazarus Powell who was living with Alexander and Sarah Connell in Illinois (Sarah was a sister of Mary Crumbaugh Clark). Another son, John Edgar Clark, was born 12 Sept 1845 in Kentucky and may be the John Clark, age 14, b. KY who appears in Ward 2, Wheeling in 1860. Others in household:
Margaret Hall, head of Household, age 55, b. PA
Samuel P. Hall, clerk, age 22, B. Va
Elizabeth Hall, age 21, b. VA
Henry H. Hall, molder, age 19, b. VA
Ann Clark, age 77, b. PA
2. Margaret Hall appears to be the Margaret Clark who married William Hall in Ohio County 2 Dec 1823. She may have been a daughter of William and Ann (or Anna) Clark. I suspect Margaret was a sister to my John Clark and the Ann in the census record was their mother.
3. Another item of interest is an Ohio County marriage between a George Crumbough and a Mary Ann Clark on 1 January 1830. The Crumbaugh family was from Frederick Co., MD. They moved to Kentucky in the early 1800's and eventually to Illinois. This marriage is the only possible connection to Ohio Co., WVA that I have found for them (have seen the name Creekbaum and Crumbacker though). What is interesting is a history from Illinois, listing George Crumbaugh (another sibling of Mary Crumbaugh Clark's) who married a Mary Ann----(no surname or marriage date given).
If anyone has any information on this Clark family or the Halls or Crumbaughs in Wheeling, any information sent would be appreciated. I do have lots on the Crumbaughs (and am willing to share) but don't have much on the Clarks.
Best Regards
Paul
