William E. CLARK married Frances TAYLOR of Buckingham Co., VA
One of their children was:
Richard CLARK b 1802 in Buckingham Co., VA (died between 1880-1900 in
Kanawha County, WV)
Richard married Frances (?) who was b 1804 in VA (died between 1860-1869 in
Kanawha County, WV)
Richard CLARK's 2nd wife was Mary CLINE
Richard CLARK's 3rd wife was Martha STONE
Richard CLARK and his 1st wife Frances --one of their children was:
Richard Daniel CLARK b. abt 1821
Richard Daniel CLARK b abt 1821 (died between 1870-1880 in Kanawha County,
WV)
married Nancy JOHNSON on July 15, 1841 in Kanawha County, WV
Nancy JOHNSON b abt 1824 in VA, died after 1880 in Cabin Creek District,
Kanawha County, WV
My supposition is that Nancy C. JOHNSON was a full blooded Indian.
Richard Daniel CLARK's brother was:
William CLARK b. 1819 married Frances I. JOHNSON on April 10, 1841
Frances I. JOHNSON was born 1819 in VA
We have no parents for Frances or Nancy JOHNSON who probably were sisters.
Probably these are sibling of Frances and Nancy JOHNSON who all lived close
to each other in the 1850 Kanawha Co, WV census:
Milburn JOHNSON b. 1807
Hiram JOHNSON b. 1812
John JOHNSON b 1827
Of course Frances might not be related to Nancy, but sure is a strong
possibility.
Richard Daniel CLARK and Nancy C. JOHNSON - one of their children was:
Chapman Taylor CLARK b 1848 in Kanawha County, WV.
Chapman was 1/2 Indian
Chapman Taylor CLARK married Annie Eliza PERRY (aka PAULEY)
One of their children was:
James Preston CLARK b. 1872 - James was 1/4th Indian
We are seeking the Indian heritage.
We do have lots of information on this CLARK family tree if anyone is
interested.
Also seeking information on William CLARK who married Frances TAYLOR; need
his parents and dates.
Frances TAYLOR's father was Daniel TAYLOR (wife unknown).
Daniel TAYLOR married wife unknown on March 17, 1773 in August County, VA.

Would anyone out there have any information on Indian stories involving any
CLARK families or that might have involved their wives.
It is a possibility with our CLARK lineage that I thought about suddenly,
one of the CLARK males could have had a wife captured by the Indians, and she
could have had a child by an Indian; and then reunited with her husband.
Please post them to your unique web site.
Thank you

According to an Uncle,
James Preston CLARK b 1872 was 1/4th Indian.
Chapman Taylor CLARK b 1848 was 1/2 Indian.
In order to have 1/2 Indian, either the mother or the father of Chapman
Taylor CLARK would be the full blooded Indian. or it's further back???
Richard Daniel CLARK b. abt 1821 was his father married to Nancy C. JOHNSON
(aka JOHNSTON). Was she the Indian or was Richard Daniel CLARK??? or was
Chapman from an affair with an Indian???
Chapman Taylor CLARK's siblings were Mary Jane 4 yrs older, Richard D. 2
years younger and the youngest was Nancy E. 6 yrs younger than Chapman.
Rumors are of Cherokee ancestry/heritage. However, in reading the history
of Kanawha County, West Virginia (and the other counties in WV read along same
lines);
first native settlers were the Mound Builders, aka the Adena people.
Several thousand Huron Indians occupied present-day West Virginia during the
late 1500s and early 1600s.
The powerful Iroquois Confederacy (consisting of the Mohawk, Onondaga,
Cayuga, Oneida and Seneca tribes, and joined later by the Tuscaroras tribe) drove
the Hurons from the state during the 1600s during this time period the
Iroquois only interested in using West Virginia as a hunting ground during the
spring and summer months.
During the 1700s was used as a hunting ground by the Mingo. The Mingo were
not actually an Indian tribe, but a multi-cultural group of Indians that
established several communities within present-day West Virginia and like all
other Indians within the region at that time, were subject to the control of the
Iroquois Confederacy.
The Seneca was one of the largest and most powerful members of the Iroquois
Confederacy and were the closest in geography to West Virginia. In 1744, the
Seneca boasted to Virginia officials that they had conquered several nations
living on the back of the great mountains of Virginia. Among the conquered
nations were the last of the Canawese or Conoy people who became incorporated
into some of the Iroquois communities in New York.
The Seneca, and other members of the Iroquois Confederacy, often traveled
through the state to protect its claim to southern West Virginia from the
Cherokee. The Cherokee were headquartered in western North Carolina and eastern
Tennessee and rivaled the Iroquois nation in both size and influence. The
Cherokee claimed present-day southern West Virginia as their own, settling the
stage for conflict with the Iroquois Confederacy.
In 1744, Virginia officials purchased the Iroquois title of ownership to
West Virginia in the Treaty of Lancaster. The treaty reduced the Iroquois
Confederacy's presence in the state.
During the mid-1700s, the English had made it clear to the various Indian
tribes that they intended to settle the frontier. The French, on the other hand,
were more interested in trade. This influenced the Mingo to side with the
French during the French and Indian War (1755-1763). Although the Iroquois
Confederacy officially remained neutral, many in the Iroquois also allied with
the French. Unfortunately for them, the French lost the war and ceded the all
of its North American possessions to the British. Following the war, the
Mingo retreated to their homes along the banks of the Ohio River and were rarely
seen in southern West Virginia.
Although the war was officially over, many Indians, especially the Shawnee
who resided in Ohio, continued to see the British as a threat to their
sovereignty and continued to fight them. On August 6, 1763, British forces under
the command of Colonel Henry Bouquet retaliated and destroyed Delaware and
Shawnee forces at Bushy Run in western, Pennsylvania, ending the hostilities.
In 1768, the Iroquois Confederacy and the Cherokee signed the Treaty of Hard
Labour and the Treaty of Fort Stanwix, relinquishing their claims on the
territory between the Ohio River and the Alleghenies to the British. With the
frontier now open, settlers, once again, began to enter into present-day West
Virginia.
In 1772, a series of incidents between settlers and Indians in West Virginia
ended what had been nearly 8 years of peace.
As late as 1774, the Indians attacked Lewis' forces at the confluence of the
Kanawha and Ohio Rivers, at present-day Point Pleasant, in Greenbrier County.
Although western Virginia's settlers continued to experience isolated Indian
attacks for several years, Cornstalk's defeat at Point Pleasant was the
beginning of the Indian presence in western Virginia.
During the American Revolution (1776-1783), the Mingo and Shawnee,
headquartered at Chillicothe, Ohio allied themselves with the British. For the
remainder of the war, smaller raiding parties of Mingo, Shawnee, and other Indian
tribes terrorized settlers throughout West Virginia. As the number of settlers
in the region began to grow, and with their numbers depleted by the war,
both the Mingo and the Shawnee moved further inland.

James, a son born where?
Chapman Taylor CLARK and 2nd wife Ella (Ellen) CURTIS MCGREER CLARK move to
Illinois and reside in the 1910 and 1920 census in Georgetown Township,
Vermilion County, Illinois.
And in the 1910 cenus we have her ex-husband also residing in Georgetown
Township, Vermilion County, Illinois: At least we believe it is him; birthplace
appears to be incorrect says Missouri. The MCGREER surname is not all that
common a name (aka McGrear spelling).
Thomas MCGREER, age in 1910 61 estimated birth year 1848: he is on page
249A (Chapman and his wife are on page 235B of the census)
Ella CLARK died March 20, 1926 in Westville, Vermilion County, Illinois.
Chapman Taylor CLARK died May 26, 1934 in Catlin Township, Illinois.
I did note that there was a Frances CURTIS married to RAINES and resided in
Louden District, Kanawha County, WVA; perhaps Ella (Ellen) visited her sister
and met Chapman via her sister.
Does anyone have any more information? Are there any McGREER or CURTIS kin

Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know for sure that this is the same Richard Daniel CLARK. Also, does anyone know if he was married prior to Frances BOWLES? He was about 32 when they married so very possible there was another marriage. He was married to Martha STONE last she was about 43 years his junior. Does anyone know if Martha married again? On the 1900 Kanawha County Census she is listed as a widow and is living with her mother, Jidida (Judidah) ______STONE.
I'm thinking (dangerous) that William CLARK (b. 1819) who married Frances I. JOHNSON and his (may have been) brother Richard Daniel CLARK (b. 1821) who married Nancy C. JOHNSON could be Richard Daniel CLARK (b. abt. 1800-1802) children from a previous marriage.
Also, are Frances I. JOHNSON & Nancy C. JOHNSON sisters?
Well, I might be barking up the wrong family tree.
Thanks for any input..
Pat

There is no proof that Richard CLARK is the father of Richard Daniel CLARK.
Believe that he is because of dates of when the CLARK children were born and
he is the only one in Kanawha Co. that could be his father.
