Deposition
Case of Ellen M. Clark, W.O. 606, 181
On this 4th day of Sept. 1908 at Sand Plains, County
of Wood, State of West Va., before me George M.
Beckett a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions,
personally appeared Florence Kincheloe, who being by
me first duly sworn to answer truly all
interrogatories propounded to her during this special
examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes
and says: I am 57 years of age. Wife of J. Taylor
Kincheloe. P. O. Parkersburg, WV, R. F. D. # 8. I
lived about mile from Abisha Clark at the time of
his death and had lived neighbor from my childhood. I
was quite often in his home during the last months of
his life and at his home the day before he died.
Well no, I did not think he was dying the last time I
saw him but I thought he would not live until morning.
Well, Mrs. Clark said that day that he was getting
worse each spell and she was quite uneasy about him
that day. I dont recall as to his health in
particular until about the last 20 years of his life.
I do not recall in what way he began ailing, that is
to the exacting cause, but it was his lungs that
troubled him at first.
It was then said that he had several hemorrhages from
the lungs, but I had heard of him having hemorrhages
now and then until his death but never saw him in one,
nor noticed that the phlegm was streaked with blood.
He always spit up in a pan of ashes by his side. Oh
yes, he spit up a good deal. Coughed and spit up for
years or until death & became very thin in flesh and
was very stooped; and he lived years longer than he
was expected to live, but he had good care from his
family & he was scarcely out of his house for years.
Walk out into the yard & that almost exhausted him. I
dont know about hectic flush or night sweats or
running off at the bowels, not even at the last. I
think Mrs. Clark told me once that he had no bowel
trouble. No I dont recall that he or Mrs. Clark or
anyone else say that he had heart disease, stomach,
liver, kidney or bladder troubles. I recollect saying
on several occasions to Mrs. Clark and the other
members of the family that it was a wonder that some
other disease did not develop in as much as he sat so
long and got no exercise, but they always claimed that
he did not seemed to be bothered with anything other
than lung troubles, shortness of breath & smothering
spells.
I know nothing about his heartbeat, whether fast or
slow or as to his temperature or whether his heart
fluttered or palpitated. I never heard him complain at
all about any pain in any part. I know I saw him have
smothering spells especially after walking in the
yard. The last day that I saw him alive, his head was
way back & he was gasping for breath and was in misery
on that account.
Did not complain just choked up and gasping for
breath. No I dont recall that he had a fever or
pneumonia, Lagrippe nor (unreadable handwriting) with
his old ailment. He had worse spells when he took cold
& of course he took cold easily. (Rest of deposition
is unreadable due to poor handwriting). Not related or
interested. Questions fully understood and was
correctly recorded and read to me.

More depositions from the Civil War Pension file of
Abishia Clark, brother of my GG-grandfather Joseph
Thomas Clark who also served with him.
Deposition
Case of Ellen M. Clark, W.O. 606, 181
On this 3rd day of Sept. 1908 at Union District,
County of Wood, State of West Va., before me George M.
Beckett a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions,
personally appeared Elonzo Johnson, who being by me
first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories
propounded to him during this special examination of
aforesaid claim for pension, deposes and says: I am 49
years of age. Farmer. P. O. Parkersburg, WV, R. F. D.
# 7, res. 4 N. E. of same. The soldier Abishia Clark
was my uncle by marriage. Ellen is my mothers sister.
Oh yes, I saw soldier often during the last years of
his life, in fact knew well past the date of their
marriage. He lived about 2 miles from here. I saw him
the day before he died & attended his funeral.
In fact I was at his house off & on and spent a good
deal of time with him. A few times stayed overnight.
He had poor health from the time I first knew him.
Well I dont know except a broken down constitution,
except he had a cough when I first knew him & he never
got rid of the cough, but he gradually failed in
health.
I dont think he did any work the last ten years of
his life, in fact scarcely out of his house or out to
his barn for several years before death. In fact he
gradually grew weaker and weaker and at death he was
simply skin & bones, and had kind of a ruddy sallow
color, in fact he didnt have much color. He lived
about 5 years longer than we thought he would live.
He was of medium size about 5 ft. 9 in. and
noticeably thin in flesh. I saw two of his brothers
and two of his sisters and they seemed reasonably
healthy and I never heard that there was any
hereditary disease in his family, for instance, lung
consumption, heart or kidney troubles. Well, he didnt
seem to be in much misery during the last months or
even years of his life except his cough, which was a
hollow, deep-seated, distressed cough.
Had all those years hacked and spit up an awful sight
of phlegm of a yellowish color and very thick
consistency. I dont recall that I saw blood in his
expectorations and I never saw him have a hemorrhage
but I heard that he had hemorrhages. I guess pretty
bad. Well, people supposed that his hemorrhages were
from his lungs. Well, I dont think he had a special
stomach trouble; still he had to be careful as to what
he ate given a light diet. But a person in his
condition would not have much appetite anyway.
He did not complain of misery in his stomach or pain
in that region, or dyspepsia, nor did he vomit that I
recall. No I dont recall that he ever complained of
diarrhea, dysentery or running off at the bowels or
piles, until the last few days of his life when his
bowels ran off considerablyhis bowels moved
frequently the day before he died while I was with
him.
Whether he had night sweats, I do not know personally,
but the family said he had them & then he told me so
himself several times. And I saw that he had the
(unreadable) flush. No kidney or bladder troubles or
anything like paralysis at any time to my knowledge;
had no liver trouble or malaria that I know of.
Whether he ever had rheumatism, I do not recall. Never
knew him to be lame. Didnt think he was a rheumatic.
Habits always good as far as I know.
I dont know whether his temperature was high or low
or whether he chilled. All I know was heart trouble;
frequently he told me that he did not rest well the
night previous because of pain or misery about his
heart. Whether his heart beat fast or slow or whether
it fluttered or whether he had palpitations, I do not
know. Not a special that I known, not even as fact. I
do not know how long the last sinking spell (?) cause
at last I think he caught a little cold; he took cold
most easily of course. He had been worse only a few
days. No, he had no typhoid fever, pneumonia or
Lagrippe that I know of.
I think he took a cold & had a sinking spell, which
spells he had frequently for which he did not rally.
The day before he died, I told his wife that I thought
he would not live two days for he seemed weaker after
each coughing spell, but she said, Oh I think he will
rally. She had been used to seeing him rally from
other sinking spells. Well, he was stooped right smart
and his breast was sunken in like. No breast at all
scarcely. I doubt if he weighed 100 lbs.--at death,
but nearly that thin for years.
Well, I think lung consumption was the immediate cause
of his death. Dont think there was any complication
when it was heart trouble. For years he had a spittoon
by his side. He was able to go to be to sleep until he
died. He was in bed the day before he died propped up
to about half sitting position for he was very short
of breath and about gone.
Able to walk about until just a few days before he
died and I think he would get hold of a chair or
something like that to assist him. Whether claimant or
soldier had been previously married, I have not heard
that. Claimant has not remarried. Not interested in
this claim at all. I hereby understood the questions
asked me and my answers are correctly recorded as read
to me.

On this 4th day of Sept. 1908 at Sand Plains, County

Beckett a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions,
personally appeared Jesse Taylor Kincheloe, who being
by me first duly sworn to answer truly all
interrogatories propounded to him during this special
examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes
and says: I am 62 years of age. Retired farmer. P. O.
Parkersburg, W. Va., R. F. D. # 8. I knew Abisha Clark
from about the time of the war and lived neighbor till
his death, and about mile apart in his last years.
Saw him last alive several days before he died. No, I
dont think that he contracted a cold or had Lagrippe
at the last. Satisfied that he had no pneumonia or
fever. It was mine and it was the general
understanding that the fatal illness the culmination
of his old ailments lung consumptionfor which we
thought he suffered for years, but he kept up pretty
well for years.
In fact he lived many years longer than we thought he
would. He had _______(unreadable) cough, it was
thought he had consumption when he came from the army,
but he kept up pretty well for years; a few years then
had hemorrhaging. I understand after that an invalid.
He coughed and spit up often (rest unreadable.)
Dont know about night sweats, _______ flush or
running off at the bowels not even at the last. No
dropsy that I know of. No paralysis. Never knew him to
complain of pain even about his heart & lungs. His
voice kept up pretty well even to the last. He was
much stooped and hollow-chested & very thin in flesh.
No known bladder, stomach, liver or heart troubles
then. Noticed no lameness that I know of. His whole
trouble seemed to be about the lungs & coughing &
hawking and spitting and shortness of breath.
Never complained of his heart in particular that I can
recall but he did complain of his lungs at times. Not
much of a complainer anyway. No knowledge as to his
condition, or pulse or as to his consumption, or
whether his heart beat slow or fast, or whether it
fluttered or palpitated. Good habits----very good. I
wasnt much acquainted with his people but I never
heard that there was any consumption in the family.
Neither claimant nor soldier was previously married.
Not interested in this claim at all. I hereby
understood the questions asked me and my answers are
correctly recorded as read to me.

Transcription from the CIVIL WAR Pension file of
Abisha (Abishia) CLARK, a brother of my GG-grandfather
Joseph Thomas CLARK. I will send more as soon as I can
transcribe the depositions.
These two are a bit graphic in describing the ill
health of Abisha.
Affidavit for Officers or Comrades
This Affidavit should, if possible be in the
handwriting of the Affiant
State of Nebraska County of Lancaster
Joseph T. Clark being duly sworn, say that Abishia
Clark of Co. G, 6th Regt. West Va. Vols., and that I
was 1st Sargent, was a member of said organization. I
do further swear that Abishia Clark contracted the
following disability, while in said service, viz: had
measles in Parkersburg, West, Va. In December 1861 and
went to Clarksburg, West Va., some time in January
1862 at which place he took cold on measles, which
settled on his lung; he coughed considerable and spit
blood considerable. I know this from personal
knowledge being in the same company with him and I
further state that I lived near him through 1880 and
he still had the same disease of lung. The said
Abishia Clark is my Brother. I know these facts from
being in the same company and near neighbors and I
further swear that I have no interest in this Claim
for Pension. Post office address is Saltillo, County
of Lancaster, State of Nebraska.
Joseph T. Clark late of Co. G, 6th Regt. West Va.
Subscribed and sworn to before me this 3rd day of
March 1885 and I hereby certify that the party whose
name is attached to the above affidavit is reputable
and credible and the person represented to be, and
that I have no interest in this claim. The contents
were read to Affiant before signing the same.
My certificate is on file in the department. F. S.
Palmer, Notary Public
Deposition
Case of Ellen M. Clark, W.O. 606, 181
On this 3rd day of Sept. 1908 at Union District,
County of Wood, State of West Va., before me George M.
Beckett a special examiner of the Bureau of Pensions,
personally appeared John N. Postlethwait, who being by
me first duly sworn to answer truly all
interrogatories propounded to him during this special
examination of aforesaid claim for pension, deposes
and says: I am 64 years of age; my post office address
is Parkersburg, W. Va. R. F. D. #2 res. 8 miles N. E.
of Parkersburg. My farm adjoins the farm in which
Abishia Clark died, and the houses are not more than
2oo yards apart. Lived right here neighbors to each
other nearly all the time from the close of the war or
there about 1868.
When I first knew him, I do not recall that he was
complaining. In fact we did not socialize together
much then or until later years.
About 20 years ago he became disabled so that he could
not work at all but was complaining for a number of
years previously he was not much of a complainer and
a man of few words. The first I realized that he was
ailing, he had a hacking cough. About 20 years ago he
started to go to church and was later taken with a
hemorrhage from his lungs, so he told me, in fact I
saw him soon afterward at his house; he was still
spitting blood and there was blood in the vessel in
the house. From that day until his death he was never
off of his farm to my knowledge; in fact for years
seldom out of his house & seldom out of his dooryard.
Why I heard he had a bad hemorrhage years before. One
he had on a Sunday, rather on Saturday<text
unreadable> to church. After that he had hemorrhages
and I saw him spit blood slightly. Dont recall any
severe hemorrhages the last years of his life. The
time he was examined at Marietta, Ohio, I went with
him as it wasnt considered safe to go before board
alone. From the time he had the bad hemorrhage at the
church he gradually failed and was thin in flesh; at
death not weighing more than 100 pounds.
I think at death nearly Skin and bones as near as a
man could be. And he was terribly stooped and his
chest was sunken way in. I arrived at his bedside
right after he died, in fact I thought he breathed
once after I arrived, and I attempted to straighten
him out & his back was so bent and so were his legs
from sitting so long and lying in a half sitting
position for so long that I could not straighten
either his back or legs.
It was a surprise to me that he did not die years
before. He had a vessel to spit in all the time at his
side this spitting was very disagreeable. The spit-up
was a yellowish stuff at times streaked with blood. He
had a hollow vaporized (?) cough all those years and
complained of choking with the phlegm & of smothering
spells. Often told me that he had to sit up all night,
that he could not rest, except in his chair.
No, he had no pneumonia or fever at any time to my
knowledge. I think he had bad colds if he had once
pretty bad, and several years before he died, 10 or 12
years before I think. He was subject to cold as a
person naturally would be in his condition. He had no
liver trouble, chills, or kidney bladder troubles to
my knowledge. Except he chilled when he had Lagrippe.
I dont know that he had any special stomach trouble.
He had to eat light food and very little all those
years.
Never complained of his stomach that I can recall & no
misery in that region-- no gas in stomach or vomiting.
Well, that I know of. Well I heard him complain some
of diarrhea, but I dont recall that he had chronic
diarrhea. No I dont recall that he ran off at the
bowels. Hadnt seen him for a few days before his
death & I was not feeling well myself hence had not
visited him as frequently as previously.
Well, he complained of his heart a good bit and that
is what caused him to be short of breath he thought,
and sat up to breathe on that accountthat and this
phlegm, which he said he could not get up nor down. I
dont know that his heart pained him nor whether it
beat slow or fast or fluttered, nor do I recollect as
to his <unreadable>. Simply spoke of his heart in any
connection with the smothering. I recall that he had a
hectic (?) flush toward the last rosy cheeks I
suppose you mean.
I dont recall as to night sweats. He was not tropical
at any time, not even about this fact that I recall
but it was not from dropsy, and I tell you pretty
nearly free from flesh. I never heard that he had
caught cold at any time of that kind. Simply got worse
and weakened and died. Didnt know he was worse until
sent for stating he was dying. So far as I know he was
always of good habits.
Never knew him to drink intoxicants at all. Chewed
tobacco moderately and did not smoke at all to my
knowledge. Well sir, I think lung consumption is what
caused his death and very slow consumption at that.
And his appearance when I arrived indicated that he
had slept away quietly without a struggle. Dont
recall that he ran off at the bowels at the last. Oh
yes, complained of his lungs all those years and
wheezed a good bit.
I hereby understood the questions asked me and my
answers are correctly recorded as read to me.
