Subject: [CLARK-WM-HADDAM] Two men, Joseph Clark, both of Haddam 1740-1750+
Hi all:
I am working on two men of Haddam, both named Joseph Clark, who are both
possibly sons of men, Joseph Clark. Both of the younger men married about
the same time, and had children born at Haddam about the same time, as
below.
Various research notes follow about those who seem descendants of Joseph
Clark 2nd, once of Haddam. I am most interested in learning about his
ancestry, but equally interested if anyone has learned the ancestry of the
man who was called, "Joseph Clark, Jr."
Joseph Clark, 2d, "m Elizabeth ______," 26 June 1746 [1] and had apparent:
.....Charles, son Joseph, 2d,& Elizabeth, b May 23, 1747 [1]
.....Susanna, dau Joseph 2d, b Apr 28, 1748 [1]
.....Joseph, son Joseph 2d, b Apr 10, 1750 [1]
.....Jonathan, son Joseph 2d, b Sept __, 1751 [1]
.....Michael, son Joseph, b Aug 19, 1753 [1]
.....Michael, son Joseph, died Sept 3, 1753 [1]
.....Michael 2d, son Joseph, b Oct 9, 1754 [1]
....."Mical ye child of Joseph & Elizabeth Clark," bap. 17 Nov. 1754 [2]
Joseph Clark, Jr. "m. Lydia ______," 9 Nov 1749 [1] and had apparent:
.....David [Clark], twin with Jonathan, son Joseph Jr & Lydia, b Nov 20,
1750 [1]
.....Jonathan [Clark], twin with David, son Joseph Jr & Lydia, b Nov 20,
1750 [1]
There is also a baptism by Rev. Eleazer May at Haddam or East Haddam in the
same time frame to a Joseph Clark whose further designation and wife's name
are not given [3].
.....Baptisms: 1760
.....April [...] Elisabeth, the Daughter of Joseph Clark.
There are a variety of other entries for births 1760+ to "just Joseph"
Clark(e), or to Joseph Clark, Jr. [10]
In 2000, responding to Jane Devlin's posting about the early Clark marriage
records [CTMID-L, "Clark Early Marriage Records, Haddam," 4 July 2000], one
lister (Dave; DMS59Dart) asked if anyone could place three of those early
Clark marriages at Haddam [CTMID-L, "Re:... [CTMID] CLARK Early Marriage
Re." 4 July 2000]. I guess I'm wondering the same thing. <G>:
.....Joseph 2nd Clark Elizabeth ( -------) 26 Jun 1746
.....Joseph Jr. Clark Lydia ( -------) 9 Nov 1749
.....Michael Clark Elizabeth ( -------) 14 Jun 1737
Separately, but to the point, Daniel BRAINERD, from Haddam (m. Esther
SPENCER) [4] organized the "re-granting" of Rumney, New Hampshire in 1767.
[5] Among the names of the [second] grantees are both Joseph Clark and
Charles Clark.
In 2001, Carolyn Porter-Fraher posted [CTMIDDLE-L] an item discovered 1997
in the Haddam Land Records dated 9 Jan 1775 calling out a Joseph Clark's
possible heirs as Charles Clark, Elizabeth Clark, Joseph Clark, Jonathan
Clark, Michael Clark, Susannah Clark, with all, or all but Susannah, then
residents of Rumney, New Hampshire [6]:
"Clark - Haddam Land Records
Vol. 9, p184: lower half of page
Know ye by these Presents that we Elizabeth Clark, Joseph Clark, Jonathan
Clark and Michael Clark, all of Rumney in the Province of New Hampshire,
Grafton County by these Presents constitute and appoint Charles Clark of
Rimney aforesaid our Lawful Attorney to act in all Respects both to Sell &
take the Pay or security for the pay in all the affair Relating to the
Interest or Estate of Joseph Clark in Hadam in Connecticut in the County of
Hartford deceased to Settle all our affairs in sd Haddam as fully as were we
their Personally Present. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands
this 9th day of January in the year 1775.
Elizabeth Clark, Joseph Clark, Jonathan Clark, Michael Clark, Susanah Clark
[their mark = X at each name]"
Working from the Haddam Land Record notation, below are some notes about the
early Clarks of Rumney, New Hampshire. My research is far from "exhaustive."
CHARLES CLARK, and wife Molly [Grafton Co. Deeds] had known children at
Rumney:
.....Charles Clark, Jr., d. 1798 [Grafton Co. Deeds]
.....Molly Clark, b. 24 Sept 1767, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Olive Clark, b. 13 Jan 1779, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Joseph Clark b. 28 Jan 1781, Rumney [NH VR]
Appears the family, as below, 1790 US Census, Rumney, New Hampshire
[Ancestry.com]:
.....Clark, Charles 3-1-3 (7); three males 16 or older, 1 male under ae 16,
and 4 females
Charles Clark's wife's full name given as "Molly Brown" in Farwell, _The
Farwell family ..._, vol. 1 (1929), pg. 107 (Ancestry.com) [8]. Farwell
reports three sons: Jonathan, Michael and Charles, Jr.
The son Charles Clark, Jr. m. Sarah Greenough, dau. of William Greenough,
who became guardian of Charles, Jr.'s daus. Sarah Clare and Sena [Asenath]
Clark by 1808 [_New Hampshire Gazette_, Jun 21, 1808, page 4
(Genealogybank.com)].
"SUSANNAH CLARK of Rumney" m. Benjamin Wells, s/o Winthrop and Dorothy
(Healey) Wells
Salisbury, Mass., US GenWeb, provides a family group sheet by John Wells
(2002) for Benjamin Wells of Plymouth, New Hampshire, b. c1747 at Chester,
New Hampshire, citing _History of Plymouth_ and NH VR, "Benjamin m1 Lydia
Wesson who died 28 Sept 1776; he m. 2 to "Susannah Clark of Rumney, NH" on 6
Feb 1777," reports that Benjamin and Susannah Clark Wells had one child,
Susannah b. 28 Sept 1777, d. 3 Oct 1777.
Possibly the family below, 1790 US Census, Plymouth, NH [Ancestry.com]:
.....Wells, Benjamin 1-0-3 (4); 1 male 16 or older; 3 females
JOSEPH CLARK had wife Hannah and known children:
.....Hannah Clark, b. 25 Feb 1783, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Polly Clark, b. 25 Sept 1785, Rumney [NH VR]
Appears the family as below, 1790 US Census, Rumney, New Hampshire
[Ancestry.com]:
.....Clark, Joseph 1-0-4 (5); 1 male 16 or older; 4 females
JONATHAN CLARK and wife Ruth had known children:
.....James Clark, b. 23 Oct 1774, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Mary Clark, b. 18 Jul 1776, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Michael Clark, b. 26 April 1779, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Susannah Clark, b. 24 Mar 1781, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Sarah Clark, b. 09 Dec 1783, Rumney [NH VR]
.....Jonathan Clark, b. 14 Jun 1784, Rumney [NH VR]
Appears the family, as below, 1790 US Census, Rumney, New Hampshire [Digital
images; Ancestry]:
.....Clark, Jonathan 2-2-4 (8); 2 males over 16, 2 males under 16, 4 females
This Jonathan Clark was ae 67 on 7 July 1819 [Rev. War Pension file,
S45680], thus b. c1752. His daughter Sarah m. unknown Piper [Rev. War
Pension file (NH), S45680]. Same source reports another dau. married David
Craig of Rumney.
Noteworthy: Barbour records report the marriage of one "Jonathan Clarke &
Ruth Clarke," Oct 1773 [7]--but which Jonathan?
I'm researching the early Clark families of Rumney, New Hampshire for clues
about my ancestor, Elizabeth (Clark) Preston, b. 22 Feb 1760 [NH VR
(Elizabeth Preston)]. Elizabeth Clark married 10 May 1779 to William Preston
[(Presson/Clark); Rumney Town Clerk's ledgers] and had 12 children between
1780 and 1801: William Charles, Collins, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Henry
De[a]rbor[n], John, Michael, Wells, Hannah (twin), Joseph (twin),
Washington, and Adams [NH VR]. Elizabeth (Clark) Preston died 17/19 Jun
1807, at Rumney. Her obituary [GenealogyBank.com]:
_The Sun : Dover Gazette and County Advertiser_
Dover, New Hampshire
Saturday, June 27, 1807, pg. 3, col. 1
--At Rumney, on the 19th, inst. after a
long and lingering illness, Elizabeth Preston, consort
of Major William Preston.--She bore her sickness
with christian fortitude, and left a kind husband and
eleven children to morn the loss of a kind wife and
indulgent mother.
William Preston (1754-1842) was a Rev. War patriot [Sgt. Wm Presson/Preston;
Rev. War Pension file (NH) S3222, W2667, BLWt 5079-160-55]. He was at Bunker
Hill, taken captive in the Siege of Quebec, and afterwards served three
years in Capt. Benj. Stone's Co., 3rd NH Reg. He was Maj. William Preston in
the local militia. See also note [9]. William Preston was born at Chester,
New Hampshire and removed c1768 to Rumney with his parents, William and
Hannah (Healey) Presson/Preston. (_Vermont Families in 1791_ includes a
genealogy of William and Hannah.) Major Wm Preston's father was one of the
Rumney grantees in 1767 ("Brainerd's grantees") [5], as were both Joseph
Clark and Charles Clark. Daniel Brainerd's son, Asahel, married 13 Sept 1774
to Maj. William's sister, Hannah Presson/Preston [4], b. 25 March 1758 at
Chester, New Hampshire [NH VR].
So hope to hear from others who may have access to additional resources.
