I just received this - perhaps a new clue to the origins of Rosanna RICH, wife
of Lemuel CLARK?

Hi Jane, I was looking something up on your website and took at look
at your "Lost Souls" section, since a few people from New London Co., Conn.
had immigrated to Yates Co., NY, where I'm doing some research work for my
website. I noticed one of your "lost souls" was Rosanna Rich, and the name
sounded familiar to me, so I looked it up in my index to the History &
Directory of Yates Co. NY, and below is an abstract on another Rich family
that obviously lived at Fort Ann, NY at some point since two of the sons
married wives there, perhaps they are related to your Rosanna Rich, but
obviously some more research would need to be done, i.e. in land records or
probate records. This record gives the names of the parents of the 3 sons
and 1 daughter. I also checked two books I have on abstracts from Yates Co.
NY newspapers published by Heritage Books, Inc., but there's only one record
on the Rich/Riche surname, in book on abstracts from Yates Co. Chronicle,
which says only that "Bessie Riche, d. 14 Nov 1857 age 52 yrs." who may
have been the mother, Elizabeth Aiken, but it looks like from other records
that John and Elizabeth (Aiken) Rich were born in the mid to late 1700s, or
their sons could not have been adults in 1805 when they came to Yates Co.,
NY. Hope this helps. Let me know if you want any more details.
BTW, Genesee Co. is northwest of Yates Co. NY. You might want to try
looking at the US GenWeb site for Yates Co., NY which is maintained by the
Yates County Historian at http://www.linkny.com/~history/genweb.html.
Another site for copies of NY probate records, but it seems to only have
wills, is at www.sampubco.com bye bb
Abstract of what's said about a Rich family in book:
History & Directory of Yates co., NY published 1873, pp. 1041-43
Among the early residents of Reading, (now Town of Starkey, Yates Co.)
were Ansel and Alfred Rich, sons of John Rich, who followed them to the new
country from Connecticut, coming 2-3 yrs. later. The sons settled in 1805
on 200 acres of land near the New Pre-Emption Line, in what is now Reading,
just across the Starkey Line. (This may have been in what is now Steuben
Co.). In 1806, their brother Elias settled adjoining them. When their
father
came, he took 100 acres, Elias 50, and Ansel 50 of the first purchase.
John Rich, the father, settled in "Beartown" and died there in 1815.
Ansel, the eldest son, m. Rhoda, dau. of John Griswold of Fort Ann, NY. She
d. in 1853 at 66. Names of their children follow.
Alfred Rich m. (1) Sarah Griswold, sister of the wife of Ansel. She d. in
1823 at age 37. His second wife was Almy Roberts (b.1802, d. 1853). Names
of his children follow.
Elias Rich had 2 children, name of wife not provided.
The brothers Rich had "an only sister, Clara," ? whose first husband was one
Rich, a sea captain. She had a second husband named Smith. Names of her
children follow, but no daughter named Rosanna was among them, only one son
by each husband, Harris Rich and Silas Smith.
The family of Clara Rich lived many years in "Beartown" which was probably
located in Town of Starkey, Yates Co., NY, and her mother whose maiden name
was Elizabeth Aikens, died there at house of her grandson, Silas Smith, at
the age of 97 yrs.
