Like you I start with William but then go to John, Daniel,Elisha and
Mandana. She was born 1763 and married Peter Hall in Vermont after the
revolution. Then I stay with the Halls up to me. If you would like more
dates etc, let me know. I think this is a great idea to have a list
dedicated to Williams descendants.

The following are extracted from the Hartford County Land Records
1639-1688, edited by Albert C. Bates. I haven't changed the
spelling and wording of the records.
Mentions in Bates of William CLARK as an 'abutter' in Hartford -

the land records of others]
Vol 1, p 215: The lands of Joseph Eaton, 1739: "One Pfell of

Silldens Land on the North."
Vol 1, p 378: The lands of Matthew Beckwith: "One pfell of wodland

West. May 1650. [This is the same description of land that
belonged Matthew Beckwith, so the date of his inventory of land
must have been after May 1650.]
Vol 1, p 426: The land of Thomas Wattes; Apr 1660: ' One pfell of

that of Joseph Eaton, purchased from the same man?]

land with Christopher Crow, son of John Crow.]

of John CROW who was one of the wealthier
inhabitants total for the three years was 21-05-
05]
----
If there were two William CLARKs in Hartford,
neither one owned much in the way of property.
The three acre homelot with it's dwelling seems
to be the largest and most valuable piece of
land. There is a margin note along side the
record of this land noting that it was sold to
Nathaniel Standly 25 Dec 1673. The mill rates
levied between 1655 and 1657 show that the Wm.
Clark listed was not among the wealthier inhabitants. Also there
are no other Wm. Clarks listed in this period only 3 to 6 years
before our William helped to settle Haddam.
In a 1665 list of inhabitants eligible for undivided lands, there is no
Wm. Clark listed.
Hopefully, these records added to the ones that others have
contributed will help us puzzle out our William's origins.

Glad that there has been some discussion regarding the parents,
birthdate and marriage date of Wm. Clark of Haddam.
Jane Devlin has stated that she has not located a marriage record for
Wm. and Katherine Bunce nor birth records for their children. I believe
that this is correct.
1.In fact while it is presumed that Wm. Clark's wife was Katherine Bunce
(based upon the fact that Thomas Bunce left a bequest to his sister
Katherine Clark) I don't believe this has been proven by documented
record. Recall that the name of Wm. Clark's wife was not mentioned in
her will.
2. The exact birth dates of the children of Wm. Clark are not known.
The order of birth is not known. There is even some controversy over
the first names of the daughters of Wm. Clark. (See Michael Owens note
regarding the article which discusses the daughters and the marriages).
What is known: daughter Wells, daughter Fenner, daughter Spencer,
daughter Hannah and deceased daughter Hubbard; sons John, Wm. Joseph and
Thomas, all mentioned in the will.
Example: Various current web sites list
the birth date of John (son of Wm.) as 1631 and 17 Nov 1651 a span of 20
years!
Joseph (son of Wm.) 1635 and 1652, etc.
3. Marriage date of Wm. Clark and Katherine Bunce. Several are
currently listed in various places 1646, and 16 Oct. 1650 to name two.
If there is an official parish record or vital record that anyone is
aware of, please share it and we will all be forever grateful.
4. Birthdate of Wm. Clark of Haddam. There are many researchers using
the birthdate of 1611. A quick check on the LDS site using this date
brought up 22 William Clarks born in various parts of England (one in
Scotland and one in MA)
The two most popular seem to be Great Bromley, Essex, Eng. and
Westhorpe, Suffolk, Eng.
5. Parents of Wm. Clark of Haddam. Thomas Clark and Ruth Keridge seems
to turn up most frequently however, I do not believe they are the
parents of Wm. Clark of Haddam. (See Michael Owens prior note regarding
the bible record of the Clarke's of Rhode Island copied by me in 1998).
Once again, if anyone has documentation that this Wm. Clark born in 1611
left Rhode Island and settled in Haddam, please share this information
with the group.
6. William Haddam b. 1611 Great Bromley, Essex Eng. (often listed as
born on the same date as the RI Wm.) shows parents as William Clark and
Margaret Hadlock. This Wm. Clark purportedly died on 15 March 1682 in
Mass. and married Margery or Margaret about 1631 or about 1636. Children
listed as Mary, Eliz, Lydia, and Hanna all born in MA. This obviously
is not our Wm. of Haddam.
7. There were many William Clark's listed in various published works in
the New England area in the 1600's. He might have been the Wm. Clark of
Hartford. He may have been the servant of John Crow.
And were these the same William?
What we do know is that Wm. Clark was one of the first settlers of
Haddam, CT.
We know the first names of his male children. We know the married names
of his daughters and the unmarried daughter Hannah. We know that the
date of his death/will was 22 July 1681. We know he owned property. I
do not believe that we know the date of his birth, his parents, his
marriage date, whether he was married more than once or his wife's name
for a certainty.
My apologies if I have offended anyone who believes otherwise. I hope
that those on the list will join in the discussion and if anyone has
vital records please share them.
Nancy

Notes for William CLARKE
In Hartford in 1639 as the servant of John Crow.12 Removed to Haddam.
Died in 1681. Inventory taken by Simon Smith among others.13 Hinman
(1852) says there may have been two men, one the servant who was in court 6
times before 1660, and the other the man who went to Haddam. Savage,
Holmes, and Jack Spencer (Connecticut Nutmegger Mar 1998, p. 597) say they
are the same man.
Notes on Clark-Clarke Families of Early Connecticut says probably a brother
of John of Saybrook and Nicholas of Hartford.14
Notes for Katherine BUNCE
Thomas Bunce in will gave L 10 to sister Katharen Clark. Hartford.
Inventory 2 Aug 1683 (L 1024), proven 6 Sep 1683.15 Thomas Bunce,
proprietor by courtesy of the town, 1639, lived near site of present
Capitol; served in the Pequot War, and was granted 110 acres of land for
good service.16

The info Michael Owens quoted was fascinating. I think I agree that Thomas
Clark/Rose Kerridge are not the parents of Wm. of Haddam. I have some
pages of the Raeola Ford Cooke manuscript Raeola refers to, which I copied
at the New England Historic Genealogical Society Library in Boston. She
does not attempt to name his parentage. Her Connecticut Nutmegger article
quoted will probably have me change the marriage of Sarah to Timothy
Spencer, and put her as the wife of Fenner. Any other comments from anyone?
Tim Tucker takes William's parentage back three generations (Thomas 3, John
2, John 1) without giving any detail or sources. I have seen enough
conflicting information in Tim Tucker's work to not accept anything until
he provides sources. I treat it like the FHL of LDS - clues only.
The Hinman work I refer to is Catalogue of the Names of the First Puritan
Settlers of the Colony of Connecticut; with the Time of Their Arrival in
the Colony, and Their Standing in Society, Together with Their Place of
Residence, As Far As Can Be Discovered by the Records. Collected from the
State and Town Records by R(oyal) R. Hinman. I know of two books Mr.
Hinman published, both with the same name, I think. The first was in 1846,
reprinted for Clearfield Company, Inc. by Genealogical Publishing Co.,
Baltimore. This is not indexed, is in partial alphabetical order, and
jumps all around - almost as though his notes were published as he
collected data. In 1852 he embarked on a formal, and alphabetical,
endeavor, giving much more detail on each subject. However, the copy in
the library above only goes into the P's, and I was told that it was never
finished. I'll quote what he says on William Clarke pp 606-607:
1846 CLARK, WILLIAM, Hartford, 1642, land holder, hired servant in
'39.
also
CROWE, JOHN, Hartford, 1639, in division of lands.
1852 CLARK, WM., a servant of Mr. John Crow, was fined forty
shillings, and corporal punishment, for drinking--the corporal punishment
remitted upon his promise of care for the future to avoid "such occations,"
Jan 3, 1639. Wm Clark forfeited his recognizance in court, of L10, in May,
1649, at Hartford. He resided in Hartford in 1659, and quite reduced in
property.
CLARK, WM., was an original first settler of Haddam. The
inventory of his estate, he being deceased, was in court at Hartford, Sept.
3, 1681, L412, 18s. He left issue, Thomas, William, John, Joseph, and
dau'rs Jennor, Spencer, Hannah, and an adopted son or son-in-law, Daniel
Hubbard. His son Thomas sole ex'r; a very reputable family. [Jennor =
ffener; will as posted by Tim Tucker clearly states son-in-law Daniel
Hubbard and gr. Child Daniel Hubbard]
CLARK, WM., owned a tract of swamp land in Hartford, in 1642;
also had land there in 1660; perhaps the same who settled at Haddam.
CLARK, WM., was brought before the Gen. Court, and they
considered the low estate of his family; Nov., 1659, ordered that the fine
imposed upon him for trading liquors contrary to low, should be to the
public treasury, 40s. per year for four years. He was in court again in
1660, and the Gen. Court, May, 1661, remitted L4 of the L8 fine before
inflicted uppon him. Probably the Wm above, servant of John Crow.
So, do we have two men or one?
The Broderbund CD calls William probably brother of Nicholas and John of
Hartford. I don't have the CD (I run a Mac) so don't know if any source
given for that. Mr. Hinman in 1852 discusses both - very prominent
settlers - makes no inference that they are connected to each other, or a
William connected to them. I would discount their being same family unless
Broderbund CD gives a good source.
So, that is what I have on William. Averill
Steve: I would be more than happy to swap info. You will notice a copy of
this email is going to a new RootsWeb list that has been set up for the
descendants of William Clark of Haddam (Daniel Clark's grandfather). What I
have is on my web site which you have already seen. A couple of other cousins
might have more, but this is the best route to go.

Looking for a William "Robert" Clark that married a Louisa Jane Kraft ? Craft ? Croft?. Robert had a couple of brothers, John, Joseph, or George, that were Barbers (cut hair) for a profession around the Fairmont, Weston area??? I don't have documentation on any of this, just what my family has told me. There is documentation of a Robert Clark wed Louisa Kraft had daughter ca. 1896 named Ethel in Marshall Co. WV. They had 2 other daughters Ann and Mayme (Mamie) Clark. Had a son Lyman Augustus Clark b., 1891, in Wheeling, Ohio Co., WV. He was a wild one. Lyman is my Grandfather. I do have marraiges of daughters. Lyman married Freda Mae Humphrey. Any body with a small link please e-mail me. I can't find a thing on these Clark's. I'm at the point I don't think they really exsisted.
Thank-you,
Jo Clark

I descend through Hubbard Smith, 3rd son of Capt. James and Mary.
(Original ancestor Simon Smith of Haddam, First Settler).
Since Haddam was not settled until 1662, it is probable that the children
of William and Katherine Bunce were born at Hartford. I also see some
dates in the Family Group Sheet Jane Devlin posted that show births before
marriage. Not that it's not possible, but maybe these are just estimated
dates. Does anyone have any proven ones? Averill
I don't have the original post from Averill, however ...

Try Christina Rice's site at
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/r/i/c/Craig--Rice/GENE7-0122.html
which gives the 1650 date. I also have a note that the date comes from a data
file sent from Harry Walden. Earlier (January 1998), Nancy Vogt sent me this:
William Clark(e)
b. @ 1625
m. Katherine Bunce @ l646. She died l683
d. 22 July l681 Haddam, Middlesex Co.,CT
which quoted source was Prestiss Glazier Clark Family Genealogy, Microfilm
Genealogical Library, Salt Lake City, Utah.
Tim Tucker's Haddam, Middlesex site shows the marriage as 1640:

I had begun an earlier email regarding the Thomas Clark/Rose Kerridge
parentage issue, but got distracted by other things. I personally don't think
they are our William Clark's parents. Here is an extract from an email from
Nancy Vogt regarding this some time ago:

The article continues:
The brothers Carew, Thomas, John and Joseph sons of Thomas Clarke, were
among the early settlers of Newport. Joseph was the only one who left
any issue; his children, who were living Dec 19, 1674, according to an
entry recorded immediately after the will of his brother Thomas were:
Joseph, John, William, Mary, Josua, Sarah married Thomas Reynolds,
Thomas, Kazy (undoubtedly Carey) and Elizabeth..

I noticed that William was not mentioned among the brothers who were
early settlers of Newport, Rhode Island. We, of course, don't know when
these brothers arrived of even if William accompanied them. The
statement that Joseph was the only one who left any issue is also
interesting.
I am further convinced that this is not our William. We have no Rhode
Island connection as far as I know.

IDENTIFICATION OF THE DAUGHTERS OF WILLIAM(1) CLARK OF HADDAM, CONNECTICUT
By Racola Ford Cooke, CSG# 4638
For about 15 years I have been searching for documentation to prove
the identity of William(1) Clarks daughters. In 1986, I wrote a manuscript
about William and his descendants, but did not have a complete family, as I
felt there must be more documents than I had. Nevertheless, I donated a copy
of this manuscript to New England Historical Genealogical Library, Boston, and
to the Family History Library, Sall Lake City. It is not a published
manuscript, but even so, once errors get into print, it is impossible to get
them erased. I hope this article will clarify the daughters and their
husbands.
The will of William(1) is File #1262, Hartford, (Conn) Probates, dated
30 June 1681. It clearly names his daughters as Daughter Wells, Daughter
ffenner, Daughter Spencer, Daughter Hannah (evidently unmarried) and mentioned
his son-in-law Daniel Hubbard. I have a photocopy of the original will.
Charles William Mainwaring, DIGEST OF EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATES, Vol. 1,
pp.290-1 contains the extract of the will, but Mr. Mainwaring mis-read the
spelling of Fenner and shows it as Fennoe. An article in THE AMERICAN
GENEALOGIST (hereafter TAG), Vol 17, p 19 (1941), by Clarence Almon Torrey,
states "a re-examination of the original will by Mr. Jacobus revealed the fact
that the name of his daughter was misread by Manwaring, the correct reading
being "daughter ffenner."
TAG, vol 27, pp 170-1 contains an article of "The Four Spencer
Brothers," by Donald Lines Jacobus. He also had some errors and always
attempted to correct them as shown in his final identification of Nathniel(2)
(Gerrard(1)) Spencers wife as Lydia Bailey, not Lydia Smith, TAG, Vol 28, p
170, Mr. Jacobus stated that Timothy(2) Spencer married Sarah Clark,
obviously an error as I will show later. Timothy did have a wife Sarah,
surname unknown, as she swore to her husbands inventory in June 1704,
Hartford Probate Dist. No. 5100 and died before the distribution.
On p 171 of above article, Mr. Jacobus suggested that William(2)
Spencer may have had a first wife before his marriage to Margaret Bates. The
marriage to Margaret Bates, I believe, cannot have taken place when she was
sixteen or younger without justification, such as pre-marital fornication, and
this would have caught the attention of Mr. Jacobus and any others who have
studied the family.
As Margaret was three months under seventeen when Williams oldest
child, Joseph is born March 1681 and there is a span of four years before the
next child Elizabeth is born Sept 1685, I conclude that Williams first wife
was Daughter Spencer, whose first name is unknown, due to the habit of William
Clark omitting his daughters given names and that she is the mother of
Joseph(3) Spencer.
S.F. Hall Coe, MEMORANDA RELATING TO THE ANCESTORY OF SOPHIA FIDELIA
HALL, (1902), p 211, the statement is made that "William(2) Spencer married
Margaret Clark." The author gives no source or document for this, but as his
first wife (nee Clark) probably died so very young, the author may have known
he married a Clark, and not having information of her death might assume
Margaret Bates was this same wife. The book was written in 1902, so Mrs. Coe
may have had relatives who told her this.
The only candidate for "dau ffenner" is Sarah, wife of Capt. John
Fenner as early as Sept 1673, when their daughter Phebe was born (Saybrook,
Conn, VR). She was still alive as late as 8 Oct 1711 when she and son John
made over a part of the daughters protion of Johns sister Hannah Starkie
(Saybrook Deeds 2:307). In his will dated 22 Oct 1708, Jon Fenner mentions
his wife Sarah, son and daughters. SoTimothy Spencers wife was not Sarah
Clark. Mr. Jacobus unsupported statement means nothing and he would be the
first one to admit it. Clarence Almon Torreys article, TAG, Vol 17, p 19,
also states "the daughter ffenner mentioned by William Clarke in his will, was
Sarah,wife of Capt. John Fenner."
Sometimes the exclusion of any other hypothesis which accounts for all
the evidence is sufficient to draw conclusions, and it is my opinion that this
is such a case.
We know that the only man named Wells or Welles in Haddam and of the
right age to marry a daughter of William Clark was James Wells and his wifes
name was Elizabeth. Manwarings DIGEST of CONN. PROBATES, Vol. 1, p 592,
James Wells, sen. Will dated 9 Jun 1690, Haddam, mentions wife Elizabeth, two
sons, three daughters.
24 Feb 1669/70, Daniel Hubbard and Mary Clark married (Middletown,
Conn. V.R.) Mary died 24 Dec 1673, her husband and son were mentioned in her
fathers will. From JOHN WINTHROPs MEDICAL JOURNAL, Mary was age 18 or 19 in
June 1668.
In conclusion, I list the children of William(1) Clark and his wife
Katheren Bunce of Hartford and then Haddam, Conn. Children probably born in
Hartford:
Sarah(2)Clark, b. say 1643/44, d. aft Oct 1711, md @ 1672, John Fenner
(1631-1709).
John(2)Clark, b. 1645, d. age 86 1731, md @ 1675, Elizabeth White (1651- liv
1728)
WilliamClark, b. 1647/8 age 22 in 1669, d. 1711, md @ 1688, Susannah Treat
(1651-liv 1728)
Elizabeth(2)Clark, b. say 1649/50, d 1712, md @ 1667, James Wells/Wellse
(1643-1697/8)
Mary(2)Clark, b. 1650/1, d. 1673, md 1669/70 Daniel Hubbard (1645-1704)
Joseph(2)Clark, b. say 1653, d. 1723, md @ 1674, Ruth Spencer (1654-1744)
Daughter(2)Clark, b. say 1655/6, d. bet mar. 1681 and 1684, md @ 1679/80,
William Spencer (1656-1731)
Thomas(2)Clark, b. say 1657, d. 1746, md @ 1686, Elizabeth Bailey (1663- ).
Hannah(2)Clark, b. say 1660, d. aft. Jul 1703, bef May 1704, md @ 1687, John
Bates (1666-aft Sep 1715).
I want to thank Neil D. Thompson, PH.D., C.G. of Salt Lake City, Utah for his
help in searching probates, wills and deeds in the Hartford, Haddam and
Middletown, Conn. Area in 1987. His reasearch was of great help in putting
together this material.

Hi, Averill.. I hope you don't mind me copying the list with my
answer to your email. I saw your post there - and I'm not sure why
I have William & Katherine's marriage in 1650 - it may be a typo,
hitting the 5 instead of the 4 and not catching it. I tried to go back to
the web site that I used as a source, but can't find it; so I'm going to
delete the marriage date. I have Hartford, Connecticut, Land
Records,1639-1688; Births, Marriages and Deaths: 1644-1730 by
Albert C. Bates on CD, and while I can find at least one birth of a
child to Katherine's brother, Thomas BUNCE, I have yet to find any
mention of Katherine's marriage to William or the births of any of
their children listed.
> I had never developed anything earlier than William's presence in Hartford.

Here again, the source is not what you would term 'solid' - but
when this went into my database, I was still in the process of
gathering data, so every scrap was a clue. I'm just starting to go
through and enter solid documention in the events sections.
Perhaps we should all start posting the data we have that is 'solid'
so that it can be compared and discussed? Because I'm in
Michigan and can't access the original records in New England,
what I'm considering as solid may differ from the others - I basically
look for transcriptions of original records [wills, town records,
church records, deeds, and the like]. I'm still debating, but would
probably include a genealogy that references a primary record for a
particular piece of data [I'm thinking in terms of the way that The
Great Migration Begins is documented].

I'd be interested in the information from Hinman on the existance of
two William CLARKs in Hartford. Why don't you paste your group
sheet into a message to the list? It looks as though you have good
notes and sources that the others could use. I have an article on
'daughter Fennoe' that I'll send you separately [attachments can't

Hi All, Communication with Donald L Smith shed no new light on Orange m.
Charlotte, and Orange m. Elizabeth Frost. It remains my conclusion that
two Orange Clarks roam at large ----- one in VT who married Frost----- and
one in N. Marlboro, Berkshire, Mass. Our guy Orange P. --- father Daniel,
moved to NY, removed briefly to Loraine Co., OH---then finally to Shanghi,
Pipestone Twp., Berrien Co. MI where he is buried beside his wife Charlotte
Washburn in the family my family cemetery which later became a community
cemetery.
Orange and his siblings, along with his father Daniel are clearly described
in the remberances of Dr. John Alanzo Clark's "THE RUBEN CLARK FAMILY
ACCORDING TO DR. JOHN ALONZO CLARK:" so nicely displayed in the work of
Michael Owens and others:
"This family I have a distinct recollection of. They resided in Pittsfield,
Massachusetts, my native place, about three years a near neighbor to my
father. The younger children were my playmates. One fact I distinctly
recollect, although I then could not have been more than four years old. In
passing through a wood yard adjacent to the house where they resided, I met
with a terrible disaster. The small chips scattered over the yard had
recently been raked into heaps and burned. Although no marks of fire were
visible, heaps of burning embers still remained beneath the superincumbent
piles of ashes that were scattered through the yard. It was summer and as a
great luxury I was permitted to go barefooted like other children in the
neighborhood. Unconscious of the concealed danger, I walked directly
through one of these heaps of ashes, and my feet sank directly down into the
burning embers beneath. The whole skin almost instantly came off my feet. I
cried out in the agony of my distress, and my cousin Laura instantly flew to
my relief and bore me in her arms to the house. I shall never forget the
emotions of gratitude I felt towards her as I hung upon her neck. It was a
very long time before I could again walk."
"Another incident I recollect in connection with my Uncle Daniel. In those
days of young existence when every tale of horror made a deep impression
upon the mind, I recollect of hearing of some cases of awful suffering from
hydrophobia. About this time a mad dog made his appearance in the
neighborhood. Some of our family made a very narrow escape from his attempt
to spring upon them and bite them. Uncle Daniel had a favorite house dog
who unfortunately encountered this enraged animal and was bit by him.
Symptoms of hydrophobia soon followed and the old faithful companion had to
be shot. This was a source of great grief to us all at the time."
"My Uncle Daniel afterwards moved into western New York where in a few years
he died. Looking into this family there are now [1840] living, --Pardon,
Jacin, Orange, Lyman, Albert, Laura, and Florilla. Laura is married to her
second husband whose name is Norton. Florilla is also married to a second
husband, whose name I am unable to ascertain. Both of these daughters live
in Elba near Batavia [New York] and several of the sons. Orange resides in
Ohio and Jacin in Michigan, who has a son who is a Baptist minister."
I have data (from within my family) regarding each of the cousins mentioned
as most of them resided at one time here in Berrien Co., MI.
Thank you all for your indulgence on this matter. I will tidy-up my work
and then contribute it to this group hoping that it will be of value to the
WM. CLARK family.
I will need help and suggestions on how best to make my data available to
the list members in the most efficient and usable manner.

Hi all, I am new here so let's hope it all works. Just this morning I
found the post seen below on the CLARK-L. It may shed much light on the
reconciliation of the ORANGE (P) Clark m. Charlotte Washburn ----- and the
ORANGE (S) Clark m. Elizabeth "Betsey " Frost matter. This confusion has
plagued researchers in the past ---- and it is now wonder.
I will contact the author immediately in hopes that any misconnections in
the past can be clarified.

Subject: {not a subscriber} Eli Clark family
My third great-grand father was Eli K. Clark who married Eunice Brown in
1817 and removed to Batavia, New York, from Connecticut. I have only clues
to his origin in Connecticut and at present they lead to his being a
descendent of William Clark of Haddam. He may connect to one of the sons or
grandsons of Peletiah Clark who was married to Anne Sutliff in the 1730's.
Eli K. Clark was born 22 Jun 1794 in Connecticut according to his oldest son,
Daniel B. Clark, in a biography of Pottawattamee County, Iowa, written in
1893. After leaving New York he moved to Andover, Ohio, where his first wife
died, he remarried and then died on 14 Oct. 1868. Since Samuel Clark, a
descendent of William Clark of Haddam, removed to Batavia, New York in the
early 1800's and some of his relatives moved on to Ohio in the 1830's I
believe that Eli could be related.
I would appreciate any help that you can give me on this search. Thank
you, Robert T. Layton

How nice to see a William Clarke List. I descend from three of his
children as follows:

Mary Hubbard m. James Smith m. Mary Hubbard
Averill
