Hi Roxanne, My great grandmother was also named Clarrissa Clark. The record I have shows she was born in 1840. She was married to Sylvanus Culver and had a son, my grandfather, Edmund. She probably isn't the same one as your Clarrissa, but I had to point out the similarities.

Hi Shelley ~ My great-grandmother was Clarissa <Reed> CLARK-MATHIS. I
have heard from other cousins that Reed was her middle name but it sure
could have been spelled READ. Clarissa was born 1831 in Ohio and
married Edmond Cavalier MATHIS who was a great-grandson of "Great" John
MATHIS of Little Egg Harbor, NJ. I have looked and looked for the
parents of my Clarissa without finding anything definite. It is
possible some of her relatives were in NY.
Thanks so much,
Roxanne Neel

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Jessie C. READ CLARK which was taken at
the Vail Studio in Geneva, New York. The photograph appears to have been
taken in the 1880's or 1890's with Jessie appearing to be in her 20's at the
time. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following
information regarding Jessie and her family:
Jessie C. READ b. about 1873 in NY to parents J. Wilson READ (b. Jun 1846 in
NY) and Ella E. IRWIN (b. 1852 in Rushville, NY).
Jessie married Benjamin R. CLARK (b. about 1862 in NY) and together they had
two children, Margaret CLARK and Edna CLARK born between 1900 and 1917 in
NY.
1800 census of Seneca, NY:
Wilson READ, age 34, born NY, a Farmer, parents born NY
Ella E. READ, wife, age 26, born NY, Keeping House, parents born NY/England
Jessie READ, dau, age 7, born NY, at School
Daisy READ, dau, age 1, born NY
Harriet READ, mother, age 72, a widow, born NY, parents born CT
+ 1 Farm Laborer + 1 Farm Servant + 1 Dressmaker
Another READ photograph recovered from the same source was that of E. Harris
READ taken in Waterloo, NY. I am assuming there might be a connection, but
I have no knowledge of what that might be. I am hoping to locate someone
from Jessie's family so that this beautiful old photograph can be returned
to the care of her family. If you are a member of this READ-CLARK Family,
or you know someone who might be, please contact me.
Thanks,
Shelley
