Hi Susan.. (Re: [CLARK-NY] Alfred Clark, Chenango County, NY?, #23416)
Both Alfred & Russell/Russel are uncommon names. Based upon naming
patterns of that time, I would suspect a common ancestor for both the
lines you mention. They were probably cousins at some level.
So, whatever research you do on either line, you most probably will find
a tie into your ancestors. I would continue to find out everything you
can from any researcher that claims either line...
Here's the earliest Russell Clark that I have in my data base.. (son of
William Clark & Mary Parsons)

Hi, Joe,
I probably did think at one time that Alfred was born in Oneida County. It
turns out that the children of another Russel Clark of Ashtabula County
(there would, of course, have to be two -- just to make things fun!) were
born in Oneida. It is for this reason that I'm skeptical of family trees
that list "my" Russel Clark as the son of John Clark and Ann Emmons of
Oneida County. Without proof, it just seems as if the wrong Russel has been
linked to that family, and so I suspect all the linkages.
The latest clue I've had to this brick wall is a listing on Ancestry for
Clarissa Clark (one of the suspected sisters of Alfred). But instead of the
usual "born about' in Chenango, this researcher lists a town and exact date
of Clarissa's birth. Unfortunately, the researcher chose to remain
unanonymous and not show his/her family tree. I've written asking for
information and/or access to the tree, but I haven't yet heard back. I keep
hoping.
I had previously not looked at church records, because I figured there must
be a lot of churches in Chenango County. Whether or not I hear back from
the researcher, I will explore further the idea that the family lived in the
village of German and look for church records there.

Susan,
I am looking for a female Clark, possibly Harriet/Hester [Hettie] in
Chenango-Broome who married into Ferguson. I have three siblings:
George Clark Ferguson b. 1836, Mary J Clark Ferguson b. 1839, And Oliver
Clark Ferguson b. 1829. Do you know of any other Alfred siblings -- I
thought the names and dates were too similar to mine to overlook -- can
email me offline

Hi,
I've been trying to find the parents and siblings of Alfred Clark, who
moved
to Ashtabula County, Ohio, in the 1820s and married Mary Jane Oatman. A
lot
of people on the web have his parents as Russel and Mary Ann (Dewey)
Clark,
with siblings George C., James Madison, and Clarissa. The children,
Alfred
included are always listed as being born in Chenango County, NY. I have
circumstantial evidence that Alfred is part of this family -- I find
Russel,
George, and James (or Madison as he is sometimes listed) and their
families
living right next to Alfred and his family in the 1850 and 1870
Ashtabula
censuses. But I don't have any documents to tie Alfred to any of them.
The
historical society for Chenango couldn't find anything for me, and I
didn't
find anything at the Ashtabula County genealogical society. I would
love to
hear from anyone who can help me or who traces back to this family.
Thanks,
Susan Clark

Hi Susan...
Have you tried the church records for the area in NY that you are looking
at? LDS probably has those records microfilmed.
I have Alfred being born in Clinton, Oneida Co., NY rather than Chenango
County, NY... Is this an update of some of your previous postings?
Thanks

All these Clark's in Tompkins! Could any be related to Michael Clark born
abt 1773 in probably New York. He married a Matilda and had daughter
Susannah Ellen in Hector, Tompkins 1822 and Daniel down near the Southern
border of Steuben County. Lindley/Lawrenceville in 1825. I can't find his
parents or wife's maiden name.
Any Help, Heather?

Hello Everyone,
It has been a while since I sent out a list update and I do apologize for
that. A surgery and illness has set me behind a bit.
Anyway, I thought it time I sent an update.
At the present time there are 77 subscribers to the Clark-NY mail list. I
would encourage all of you to share and ask questions. Someone on the list
might be able to help.
Also...... as you run across others working on the Clark name in New York
please invite them to join the list. The more subscribers we have the more we
can help each other.
I also thought you might be interested in these two sites.
http:/archiver.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/search
In the past we have only been able to search each individual mail list. But
this URL will get you to a search page for all rootsweb mail lists.
To begin your search look under the heading "Archives Search Engine".
It is also helpful if you read their search tips.
Then just for the fun of it try this URL:
www.google.com/patents
You can put in a surname or location and find patents associated with that
surname or location.
Quite interesting....<g>.
Take care and have a great week.

I might as well jump in here. I had Clark's named Elias (1755-1845), Samuel
(1785-1871), Peter (1790-1857) , ) James, and Josiah (Elias Jr.?) that lived
in Milton of then Cayuga County that later became Genoa and finally Lansing
in Tompkins County. My Clarks married into the Jay family. I have had my DNA
tested and found a couple of distant matches at the Familytree Maker Clark
Surname Project. If anyone knows of any current day Clark males that lived
in this area I would encourage folks to participate in this study. I grew
quite tired of the brick walls. I want answers to fill the gaps.

Roxanne,
I would try to find more records for Augustus and Mary. Often the place of
birth varies according to who answered the question. Check later census
records for Augustus. I've found that the place of birth for some people varies
according to who is giving the information and even how accurate the
enumerator cared to be. I wouldn't take Clarissa's response as accurate without
other records to check it against. Often children were born one place and the
parents moved almost immediately to another location. Some babies were born
on the road during a move by the family in a State that the family never lived
in, others were born on a visit to relatives. Other family members assume
that they know where their parents were born when they really only know where
they last moved from or where they grew up or married.
I would also check the 1880 census for other members of Augustus's household
in 1850 to see what their response was to the question of where their
parents were born. This can be difficult especially if all of the children were
girls.
So far, I have no information about an Augustus Clark in my line although
there was a man by that name living in Tompkins Co., NY in 1820, but I haven't
found a link between my Clark's and his. Augustus doesn't appear in the list
of members of the First Baptist Church of Groton where my line of Clark's is
represented.

Roxanne,

Hi Sue...
It looks like the will helped with the name of Nathaniel's wife. Too bad
it wasn't more specific with children, etc..
Have church records shed light on any marriages or births of children,
etc?
The only Diadama I have in my data base is Diadama BELYEA, b abt 1820,
who married a James Clark. However, that line was Loyalist in NB, CAN.
Are there any connections to Canada in your line?

Hi Sue, I was interested in the Smith name below and Tompkins Co. I have
Caroline Clark who married William N. Smith in Tompkins Co. They had a son
Perry about 1833 there. That is the extent of what I know. Just thought I
would throw that in. Thanks, paula

This is an update for a previous post.
Nathaniel Clark, born 1755-1774, died August 1806 in Kingsbury, Washington
Co., NY. He left a will naming his wife, Dordana (also spelled Dordina) Clark
as his beneficiary. The witnesses for his will were Thomas Clark, Robert
Clark and Miriam Smith. I am assuming that all of the witnesses were either
relatives and/or close respected neighbors.
>From census records I gather that Nathaniel and Dordana had a large family
although none of the children are named in the will or in the letters
testimentary document. Dordana is probably the woman listed as Diadama Clark in the
1810 census in Kingsbury since the children closely match the 1800 record for
Nathaniel Clark in that town. She next appears as Dordamy Clark in Groton,
Tompkins Co., NY. She still has a large number of family members living with
her. The household listed just prior to hers in 1820 is Salathiel Clark who
I believe is her son.
If anyone has information about Nathaniel and Dordana, or can shed some
light on any of the witnesses of Nathaniel's will I would be very interested in
corresponding.
