To confuse the issue further, from Newspaper in the Archives of
Colgate University, Hamilton, Madison County, NY (Democratic Republican
1867) a Nettie A. daughter of George C. Clark of Hubbardsville married
Elisha J. Blinn. Where in the heck she falls in the picture has not yet
been determined.
There also is a possibility that more that one Polly Yaw existed. Our
Polly is burried (d 1848) in the Graham Cemetery along with George and
Phebe Niles ( also the rest of the Niles family). The Democratic
Republican 1886 p.99 has Mrs. Polly Yaw, age 82 years, 4 months (? died).
Perhaps a mother to our Polly.
Oh yes, the curator of the Graham Cemetery, Stockbridge, Madison Co,
NY tells me that his records only start in 1900. All data before that
date must be read on the tombstones which are fading fast.
Polly: died 1848 (tombstone)(IGI had birthdate as abt 1813)

Stephan, thank you for the info. My Hudson family was primarily
Presbyterian, at least in Blooming Grove/Goshen, Orange Co. NY & Waymart,
Wayne Co. PA. So far I haven't found any info during the 1810 era when they
were in Angelica, Allegany Co. NY. By 1820 they moved back to Orange Co.

Here's what I have and I hope it helps:
1) Joseph Clarke married Hannah Perry (an ancestor of Oliver Hazard
and Commodore Matthew Perry) in Richmond, RI, on 26 Dec 1746. They
had a flock of children: Hannah, Stephen, James, Perry, Susannah,
Molly (Mary), Ann, Joseph and Samuel. All except Molly and the last
two boys are known to me to have married and had children.
2) Stephen (b 13 May 1753, RI) married Susannah Potter (b 31 Mar
1758, RI) on 24 Nov 1774 and by her had 12 children, including Hazard
Perry. They both died in Madison Co., NY. The problem with Madison
Co. is that NY chopped up counties all over the place, so Clarkes who
are reported as being in Madison Co., may at the time actually have
been in either Otsego or Chenango Counties as Madison was built from
parts of both of them. IT is, therefore, necessary to check records
in all three counties. I have Otsego and Chenango to do.
3) Hazard Perry (b 9 Dec 1784, RI) married Phoebe Whitford in 1803.
From the first page of the Fifth Generation in the Crumb genealogy
we find, “Joseph [Crumb] moved from Rhode Island before 1800 to Mad
[ison] Co., and settled soon afterward upon a large farm in
Plainfield, Otsego Co., N. Y. He built a house at a place called
‘Crumb’s Corners’, a half mile east of Leonardsville. In company with
his brother-in-law, [Hazard] Perry Clarke, he built a dam on the
Unadilla River; then a grist mill, a saw mill, a carding machine
building and a trip-hammer shop.”
Hazard moved to Independence , Town of Andover, Allegany Co, in 1820
from Brookfield, Madison Co., and started farming in the south part
of the town. He stayed there until his death. This information is
from the _Gazetteer and Business Directory of Allegany County, NY_,
1875, compiled and published by Hamilton Child, Syracuse, NY 1875,
pp. 53-6.
The Clarkes seem to have moved with families named Crumb and Maxson,
and we find lots of intermarrying for two or three generations in the
Madison Co. area. Surnames appear as given names in the families, so
they were very close.
I don't know how Clarksville got its name, but it is reasonable to
assume that there may be a connection. I know that there are lots of
Clarkes in Allegany County to this day, but that many of them
continued to move westward into Ohio and elsewhere. I've not done a
lot with this line, but there may have been other siblings or cousins
who moved into Allegany Co. at about the same time as Hazard. It is
important to note that the Clarkes were usually associated with the
Seventh Day Baptist Church, a small denomination that is still active
and especially so in Allegany Co. I've not gotten there yet to do any
research, but my wife has cousins in the area, so we may have to
visit them for a bit to do some research. The various historians in
Allegany Co. have proved helpful to me so far as has the national
office of the Seventh Day Baptist Church. However, all of the
historical membership records of that church are here in Rochester at
the Colgate-Rochester Divinity School, but they are presently crated
up for shipping to Mercer Univ. in Atlanta, GA, and no one is allowed
access to them. I even tried pleading and got nowhere. I was told
they're to be shipped in the spring of 2008, but I don't know when
they might become available. Meanwhile, I sit here, less than 20
miles from the records and can't get at them. I've also tried to find
a professional genealogist to do some digging for me when the records
do become available, but I can't find one in Atlanta recommended by
the BCG! Road trip anyone?
I am researching Stephen's brother, James. He is known to exist and
I have ample proof of that, but proof of the connection between him
and my g-g-g-grandfather, Samuel, remains elusive at best. My line
from Joseph, if I can ever prove it, would be: Joseph, James, Samuel,
Alanson, John Wilson, Edwin Wilson, Albert John, Stephan Paul.

Dear Jean,
My Clarkes came from Columbia Co., NY. Andrew Clarke b-Aug 6,1766 in New
Concord, NY He married Catherine Fanning from Preston, New London, NY b-
1772 Their children all were born in Columbia Co., NY The first 5 were born
in Chatham, Columbia Co., NY. The next 4 were born in Red Rock, Columbia Co.
NY and the last 2 were born in Hudson, Columbia Co., NY. Later they lived
in Lenox, Mass. Wiliam Andrew , Known as Dr. Andrew graduated from the
Doctor's School in Lenox. After Andrew , the father died his wife, Catherine
migrated to Kahoka, Mo with her son and then after her death in Sugar Creek,
Kahoka, MO., some went to Oregon. If you know anything about them please let
me know.
Thank you,
Leah Fernald
Does anyone know how Clarksville in Allegany Co. NY was named? Or anything about a Clark family in Allegany Co?
There is a Thomas Clark family from NY who was in Canaan Township/Waymart, Wayne Co. PA by 1830 census. This is the same place my HUDSON family migrated to by about 1825, including a son Vincent Clark Hudson. Vincent/Vinson was born 27 Feb 1807 in NY, probably Blooming Grove/Goshen, Orange Co. or Angelica, Allegany Co. (1800, 1810, 1820 census).
Vincent's parents are Eleazer & Abigail (maiden name unknown) Hudson, both born in NY. Trying to find if Abigail, born 5 Aug 1781 could be Abigail CLARK or Eleazer's mother is a Clark.
Many thanks for any clues --
Jean (Hudson) McNamara
I am wondering if anyone is researching the following Clark's who lived in
Groton, Tompkins Co., NY between 1820 and approximately 1850?
Polly Clark, b. 1801 in Washington Co., NY who married Francis Kennedy (also
spelled Kenneday or Canady), b. 1803. They had a daughter named Dordanna or
Dordania Washburn Kennedy, b. 1831 in either Groton or in Hartsville,
Steuben Co., NY. Dordanna married Daniel Hopkins Orvis. I have found Francis and
Polly Kennedy living in Hartsville, Steuben Co., NY in 1850. While Daniel is
living in Howard, Steuben Co., NY.
Daniel was the son of another Clark I am seeking information about: Elcy
(possibly Elizabeth) Clark, b. 1794 who married Eber Orvis, b. 1791 in
Connecticut. Another of this couple's children married one of the Kennedy's, Martha
J. Kennedy who was the daughter of Francis and Polly (Clark) Kennedy, which
leads me to think that the two families may be related. Eber and Elcy married
prior to 1818 when their oldest son, Hiram was born, but I don't know where
they married. I have traced the couple to a land purchase in the town of
China in what was then Genesee County, NY. I cannot find a census record for
Eber in 1820 so I am assuming that the family was either on the move or living
with relatives. By 1830 Eber had moved back east to Groton, Tompkins Co. NY
where he stayed until some time between 1840 and 1850. His wife Elcy died in
1846 according to information I've found. About this time Eber moved into
his son Hiram's household. In 1850 they were living in Howard, Steuben Co., NY.
At this time I'm trying to determine if Polly Clark Kennedy is related to
Elcy Clark Orvis, or if this is just a coincidence.
