Does anyone have Robert Elliott Clarke, born in 1855 or 1856 in New York?
I have no idea what county.
Supposedly his parents came from England; a suggestion is that he went with his father to southern California as a boy, later returning to the east. (My earliest find is in the 1880 census teaching music in Philadelphia as "R. Elliott Clark"). He was also known under the stage name of Richard Condon when he worked as an actor in the 1880s, and advertised as a voice teacher as "Professor Richard Condon". He married my great-grandmother in Chicago in 1886; they then lived in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. and Paris; divorced in Chicago in 1896, and I don't know what became of him after that.
Any suggestions gratefully received!
Lisa Tuttle
Roxanne,
My Clarisa was born in Stueben Co. NY, and her son (my grandfather) was named Edmond. She was born in 1840. Her father's name was Varnun Clark born in NY in 1812. Her mother's name was Angelina born in Mass.
I don't know if this will be any help, but the more names in a database, the better.

Joseph,
In your database of NY CLARKS, by any chance might you have a Clarissa
Reed CLARK who was born in Ohio 29 Nov.1831? Her parents [names
unknown] were supposedly born in NY according to the 1880 US census. A
cousin told me that Clarissa's middle was REED which may be a clue to
her mother's maiden name. Clarissa married Edmond C. MATHIS 18 Sep 1853
at LaSalle Co., IL. Clarissa and Edmond are both buried at Cathay,
Wells Co., North Dakota.
Many Thanks,
Roxanne Neel

Nathaniel Clark appears in the 1800 Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY census:
pg. 421
Clark, Nathaniel 3 males <10; 3 male 10 - <16; 1 male 16 - <26; 1 male 26
- <45
3 females <10; 1 female 16 - <26; 1 female 26 - <45
His will is indexed on the SAMPUBCO list for Washington Co., NY on the index
covering the years 1803-1811. I haven't obtained a copy of the will yet,
but I hope to soon. Hopefully it will clear up a lot of questions.
I believe that the following record from the 1810 Kingsbury, Washington Co.,
NY census is for his widow and surviving children:
pg. 357
Clark, Diadama 2 males <10; 1 male 10 - <16; 6 males 16 - <26
1 female <10; 1 female 10 - <16; 4 females 16 - <26; 1 female over 45
2 doors away (Luther could be one of the older sons)---
Clark, Luther 1 male 26 - <45
3 females <10; 1 female 26 - <45
This is all the information that I have for Nathaniel. There are various
Nathaniel Clark's in the 1790 census, but I not in Washington County.
A number of Clark's from Colrain, Hampshire/Franklin county, MA moved to
this area. A biography for my g-g-g-granduncle, Alvah B. Clark, b. 1828 in
Almond, NY, d. 1903-1910 in Hamilton Co., IA, says that the Clark's were from
Ireland and one or more of his forebears were killed by the French and Indians.
The Clark's of Colrain (descendants of Lt. John O. Clark) fit all of this
information. A number of John O Clark's descendants moved to Washington County
and Kingsbury in particular. Some with the Clark surname as well as some
Stewart's and McGhee's. Alvah B. Clark's mother was Mary Smith who's forebears
came from Scotland, which also matches the Smith's of Colrain who also had a
number of members move to Washington County.
