Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I , also am interested in a NY Clark DNA.
My maternal great grandfather Charles A Clark was born in NY. Lived in NY State in 1870's to 1921, was a Civil War veteran. Married Anna? (Maybe Guin or Green). His paternal grandson might give a sample. We know little about him 1870. One granddaughter thinks he was a jockey in his younger years and came from southeastern part of the NY state. In in a census two daughters say he was born in Michigan. Maybe he moved to Michigan and came back to NY. In the census he was found, it states NY. and Anna was born in NY. Charles A Clark's father was born in VT.
I think DNA would help a great deal.

Hi...
Is it possible that Caroline was a widow of a Clark?
Could her marriage to Smith been a 2nd one?
I looked for a Perry Clark as a possible father of Caroline.. No match.
Did they have any other kids that could have been named for Caroline's
parents?
Was there a father's name for William Smith... Possibly Perry?
Perry is not a common name for that time frame..

I am still trying to find "anything" on CAROLINE CLARK. She married William Smith and they had at least one son, Perry G. Smith in 1833 in Tompkins Co.
I don't know anything else about her or William. It is possible they ended up in Tioga Co. Pa. ( but not sure).
I never see the name Caroline so am wondering if she would go by a nicname. Dont know what that would be for Caroline.
Anyone out there ever heard of a Caroline Clark??
Thanks, Paula
Emma,
Is this the John Jay Clark that you have posted before? If so
you were going to get back to me at one time. I have an Elias Clark 1753
(or 55)-1845 who signed the pledge to support the Continental Congress
in 1775 in Goshen Orange County New York. Also signing with him were a
Moses and John Clark. Elias was married to a Hiley Cole in March 1778 in
The First Presbyterian Church in Goshen New York. Elias had a son Samuel
1785-1871 who married a Ruth Jay. Elias also had a Daughter Margaret
(1796-1871) who married a man named Jesse Jay. Ruth and Jesse were
bother and sister and they were the offspring of Mr. Joshua Jay. Joshua
also had a son named John. You can find these Jay families in the 1825
census for Catharine Tioga County (now Schuyler) New York or the 1830
census for Veteran in Chemung. Elias' Revolutionary War pension states
that he had a brother , but, no name is given. I am thinking that it
could be either John or Moses.
Elias lived in Milton Cayuga County which later became Lansing in
Tompkins County New York in the early 1800's. Elias had two sons that I
have not been able to document very much about.... James and Josiah. I
am thinking that Josiah was also know as Elias Jr. because the 1830
Census in Wayne Steuben County New York shows my Elias living with a
younger Elias who had several sons. I have found land deeds in Tompkins
County that suggest that Elias' son James was married to a woman name
Mary. Hopefully one of us can find the key to our missing Clark lines. I
still want a New York State or at least a northern Clark DNA project! I
believe many of our questions could be answered using this technology.
Thanks

I don't know about your John Clark -- so sorry! But I keep trying to find
more about my spouse's John Clark, who was born around 1740, I think. According
to a report by his grandson, Jotham Clark, John Clark's father, also named
John Clark, was one of three brothers (the other two were Thomas and Abraham)
who came to America from England "some time after our Pilgrim Fathers came from
England." The first John Clark was a hatter by trade; the second one
reportedly married twice, to Martha Westcott (in Bedford, Westchester County, New
York) and then to Polly Robinson (Robeson). Anybody have this family in their
tree? Thanks. Janet Clark
Hi Everyone,
Thought I would send my New York Clark problem and see if anyone connects or
has any ideas.
I am hunting John Clark. Best guess from census is that he was born abt
1779 and the theory is that he was born in NY but I am not sure about that.
He married Anna Gibbs - daughter of Truman Gibbs and Anna Barnes.
Anna Gibbs was born 8 May 1780 in Litchfield Co., Conn. and died 4 Feb 1860
in Linn Co., Oregon.
I do know the following about John Clark.
In 1838 he and his family moved from New York - Broome Co., I think -- to
Ohio and then on to Illinois.
Along with them in this move was the Benjamin Gibbs family, Anna's brother.
John Clark and Anna Gibbs had the following children who indicated in later
census they were born in the following states:
Orange - 1795/1801
Alvin - 1805 - New York
Cynthia - 1805/1810 - New York
Truman - 1806 -
Naomi - 1811/1820 - New York
Samuel - abt 1814 - New York or Ohio
John J. - 1815 - Ohio
Rosetta - 1818 - Ohio
Cyrus - 1811/1820 - ????
I have found John Clark and family in the following census:
1820 - Illinois
1830 - Illinois
But have still not found them in the 1810 in NY or 1840 & 1850 in Illinois.
John Clark died in June 1852 according to one of his granddaughters.
The obituary for John J. Clark (son of John Clark) says that
Rev. John Clark, his father, was a native of New York and a pioneer Baptist
minister in both Ohio and Illinois.
Sure would appreciate any help on this hard to find gentleman.
Thanks so much.
Emma
Hello Everyone,
I thought it might be time for a list update.
At the present time there are 81 subscribers to this list.
As you know Rootsweb has thousands of mail lists for all localities and
surnames. So, I thought this might be a good time to talk about what is
involved
in posting an effective message for mail lists.
First of all, to post a message to any Rootsweb mail list you have to be a
subscriber. You can find a list of available mail lists by going to the
main
rootsmail web site at
http://www.rootsweb.com/.
You can also access the archives for any mail list from this main site as
well.
To make your post more effective do the following:
1. Make sure your post is appropriate and on-topic.
A request for information on John Smith in Tennessee is going to be a lot
more effective if posted on the Smith or Tennessee mail list than it is on
the
Jones mail list. That may seem obvious but you have no idea how often that
happens...<grin>.
2. Use subjects that reflect the content of your message.
A subject like "Hunting for my grandfather" or "Seeking family
information" or "Help Needed" isn't going to get the same readership as
"John Smith - Rutherford Co., Tn" or "Jane Doe - b. 1813 Ky".
3. Include who, when, and where in your message if at all possible.
There are a lot of Henry Jones or John Jenkins folks out there and if you
don't explain which one you are hunting you are less likely to get a
response.
4. Be as specific as possible when talking about localities.
Include county and state information if you know it. Seeking information
on
Bud Smith of Sweetwater isn't very helpful. There are many towns in the US
named Sweetwater. Many county names are also duplicated in several
states/areas, etc. Let folks know which "Rutherford" county you might be
asking
about. In some cases, a city name in one state is a county name in
another. So
be as clear about the location as you can.
5. Don't post off topic messages.
If you have any doubt then contact the list admin.
6. if you have any questions or concerns always contact the list admin.
You can contact any list admin by sending a message to
listname-admin(a)rootsweb.com. For example,
smith-admin(a)rootsweb.com.
7. Invite others to join the list.
As you meet others working on the same surnames or same area invite them to
join the various lists. The more people working on a surname the more
sharing there
can be.
8. AND.... remember, if you don't try you won't get anywhere. So....the way
to make contacts is to post your information.....hint.... hint.....<grin>.
Hope this helps. Take care and have a great day.
Emma
I have a Thomas Clark, born about 1766 and wife, unknown (could have been Mary) who had six children born in Saratoga County, New York.
1. Justus Clark was born 7 Jan 1788.
2. Lucy D. Clark was born 1 Sep 1790.
*3. Agnes Clark (maybe)
4. Anson Clark, born in 1797.
5. Marcia Clark, born 4 Nov 1798.
6. Eunice Clark, born (?).
I found an Agnes Clark born to a Thomas Clark. But I'm not sure if this Thomas Clark is the same as our Thomas Clark. Any help will be appreciated.

Ok Everyone,
In terms of the lists I admin, the Bigelow, Clark-IL, Clark-NY, Clark-Tx and
Crump lists have all been moved to the new software.
AND... there is an indication that the concerns between rootsweb and AOL are
either solved or well on their way.
SO.... how about giving this new software a try and see if everything works
smoothly.
Instead of replying to this message start a new one and address it to which
ever list you are on:
Bigelow(a)rootsweb.com
or
Clark-IL(a)rootsweb.com
or
Clark-NY(a)rootsweb.com
or
Clark-Tx(a)rootsweb.com
or
Crump(a)rootsweb.com
How about doing some posting on your lines or asking for some info. you
might need or posting your brick wall.
If you have any questions or concerns give me a yell at enc6(a)aol.com.
Thanks so much for your patience.
Take care and have a great day - Emma
Ok... here is some basic information.
First of all, please note that apparently there are still problems with
rootsweb mail and AOL so AOL folks are probably not receiving mail sent
under the
new software at this time.
I will try to send each AOL member on the list and let them know about this.
Folks not receiving the mail via the mail list can go to the archives for
right now to see messages.
However, that also means that since I am on AOL I am operating blind so to
speak in trying to work with the new tools.
Therefore, if something "awful" happens would some of you please let me know
via a message to enc6(a)aol.com
Hopefully they will get it worked out soon.
In the meantime note the following changes:
To send a message to the list you now send it to
_Clark-NY(a)rootsweb.com_ (mailto:Clark-NY@rootsweb.com)
To subscribe or unsubscribe to the list for what was formerly known as the
"L" version send a message to
Clark-NY-request(a)rootsweb.com
You MUST, I repeat MUST put the word subscribe or unsubscribe in the subject
field of the message for the request to work.
To subscribe or unsubscribe to the list in the digest mode send a message to
Clark-NY-D-request(a)rootsweb.com
You MUST, I repeat MUST put the word subscribe or unsubscribe in the subject
field of the message for the request to work.
You can no longer be subscribed to the list in both List and Digest modes
using the same screen name/address. If you want to receive both then you
will
need to use a different address for one of them.
Again, please bear with me and the other listadmins as we figure all this
out. And.. please drop me a message at enc6(a)aol.com with any questions.
Thanks for your patience and take care,
Emma
Good Evening Everyone,
By now many of you probably know that the rootsweb mail lists are being
moved to new software.
An announcement about the move appears on the helpdesk site. I have
included that announcement further down in this message.
A schedule has been set up for the migration of the various lists. Lists
will be moved according to the first letter of the list name. Right now that
schedule looks like this:
Thursday, August 17 - Lists A - C
Monday, August 21 - Lists D - F
Tuesday, August 22 - Lists G - I
Wednesday, August 23 - Lists J - L
Thursday, August 24 - Lists M - O
Monday, August 28 - Lists P - R
Tuesday, August 29 - Lists S - U
Wednesday, August 30 - Lists V - Z
It is possible that something could cause the schedule to be changed. That
too happens sometimes with computers....<g>.
There really isn't anything for you to do to prepare for this move. But I
did want to let all of you know about it.
Once the list has been moved, I will send a test message to let you know the
move has been accomplished
While every effort has been made to make this a smooth move we all know that
sometimes things do happen.
Should you experience problems you can check the helpdesk site for the
latest information:
_http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com_ (http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com)
Or.. you can contact me at _enc6(a)aol.com_ (mailto:enc6@aol.com) . I work so
I might not answer you immediately should you try to contact me during the
day. But will respond as soon as I can.
Oh... one more thing. The move will mean a change in the tools the admins
use to manage lists. So please be patient with all of "us listadmins" as we
do a bit of learning on the job so to speak.....<g>.
Thanks for you understanding and patience. See below for the announcement
that appears on the help desk site.
Take care - Emma
The following announcement appears on the helpdesk site:
