Hi Joe,
Does anyone know the names of the children of John Clark and Abigail
Hutchinson? My line is stumped with Andrew Clarke whose Father is supposed to be
Jonathan Clark(e)no name is given for the mother. The "e" in this line comes and
goes. Andrew is the father of my Dr.Andrew Clarke and a brother named Wheeler
Hutchinson Clarke. I have been wondering where the Hutchinson comes from.
Thanks, Leah
Hi Joe,
These are the children of John Clark and Anar/Hannah Gibbs.
I have put my comments in between your comments on each child.
Hope it makes sense.
Take care - Emma

KY. Orange died By 1835 in IL.
Best guess for birth date & location. An Orange Clark md Isabel Seely
in 1827 in Lisle, Broome Co., NY. (relative or this one? or the same?) ...
His birth is listed as 1802 in IGI Film #1760778.
Isabel: Best guess for birth date & location. Or SEELY?... dau of
Charles NEELY and Jane MARTIN...
1. Jane CLARK #15249, b. Abt 1825.
Emma's Notes: I don't know where the Seely comes in but Orange Clark married
Isabel Neely on 22 July 1824 in Clark Co., Illinois. The record of their
marriage is in the county records. Isabel Neely was the daughter of Charles
Neely and Jane Martin. That relationship is proven via a 1841 deed in the
Russellville, Ky court that lists the heirs of Charles Neely. And... in her
memories, Irene Davis talks about Uncle Orange whose widow married Uncle Samuel Clark.
B. Alvin CLARK #723, b. 15 May 1805 in Probably NY. He married Laura
GIBBS #18613, married 30 Aug 1823, b. Abt 1808, d. 1849 in IA. Alvin died 25

vol. 24, Issue 8, April 1975... m. to Laura Gibbs who died abt 1849 in Iowa then
married to Mary Miller Moore who died enroute to Oegon in 1852 then married to
Eferiah McCraken. Marr. Record to Mrs. Mary Miller Moore - July 17, 1850 -
Illinois On-Line.
Laura: Best guess for birth date & location...
Emma's Notes: We have pretty much the same info. on Alvin Clark. So far I
have found him in the 1850, 1860, and 1880 census. Am still hunting 1870.
C. Truman Gibbs CLARK #724, b. 29 May 1806 in Lisle, Broome Co., NY.
He married Elizabeth LONG #18631, married 4 Aug 1833 in Whitesides, Fulton Co,
IL, b. Abt 1813 in VA, d. Abt 1858 in IA. Truman died 17 Aug 1880 in
Gardener, Johnson Co., KS.
On 21 Jan 1865 Truman married Mary Gorseline in Gardner, Johnson Co.,
KS.
Elizabeth: daughter of Gabriel Long and Sally Whitten...
Emma's Notes: Again, we have about the same information. I have him in the
1850 and 1880 census but have had a hard time finding him in 1860 and 1870.
Any ideas???
D. Cynthia CLARK #722, b. Abt 1808 in Lisle, Broome Co., NY. She
married William Harvey MARTIN #16746, married 13 Dec 1821 in Laurence Co., IL, b.
Abt 1790. Cynthia died in Probably TX.
Best guess for birth date & location... Was 2nd wife of William...
Cynthia Clark - b. 1805-1810 - Based on the 1820 Edwards Co., Illinois
census.
Emma's Notes: I don't know for sure that Cynthia Clark Martin moved to the
Dallas area of Texas. However the children of William Harvey Martin and his
first wife all ended up down here. So did her son, William Harvey Martin, Jr.
E. Naomi CLARK #725, b. Abt 1809 in NY, d. Abt 1824 in IL.
or b. Reading, Hamilton, OH... said to have died at age 17 from a
dose of opium given her by mistake... Naomi Clark - 1811/1820 - This is based on
the 1820 census but, in her "A History of the Early Life of Mary Gibbs
Bigelow" by Mary Gibbs Bigelow she talks about "my little cousin Naomi Clark, a
year and a half younger than myself" - And by her history, Naomi Clark was born
on 26 June 1809. So that might help peg Naomi as close to the 1811 birth date.
Emma's Notes: This is all I have on Naomi too.
F. Samuel Lee CLARK #726, b. Abt 1814 in OH or NY, occupation Baptist
Minister. He married (1) Jane A. DICKEY #11118, married Abt 1830, b. Abt

1. John Thomas CLARK #731, (son of Samuel Lee CLARK #726 and
Isabel NEELY #730) b. Abt 1840 in Moultrie Co., IL, occupation carpenter, sheriff,

Baptist Minister... m. July 1866, TX, Charity Ann HIGHTOWER, (b. 1849 in Izard Co.,

2. Thomas CLARK #732, (son of Samuel Lee CLARK #726 and Isabel
NEELY #730) b. Abt 1840 in Probably IL.
Best guess for birth date & location.
Emma's Notes: These are my great, great grandparents. Samuel Clark did
marry Isabel Neely Clark on 24 Sept 1835 in Coles Co., Ill. But I do not believe
he married that Jane Dickey. Not sure where that came from.
I have seen that middle name of Lee for him but have not seen that in any
documents. He did have a grandson named Samuel Lee.
Also... you show 2 children for Samuel Clark and Isabel. The two you have
listed are actually the same people. They had 6 children: Emma - abt 1837;
Naomi, abt 1839; John Thomas, 28 Nov 1840; Charles Samuel, abt 1844; Sarah
A., abt 1847, and Daniel James Edwin, 11 July 1849. All the children were born
in Illinois except Daniel James Edwin who was born in Texas.
G. John J. CLARK #728, b. 18 Jun 1815 in Reading, Hamilton Co., OH,
d.24 Nov 1902 in Brush Prairie, WA.
Based on 1820 census his dates would be1811-1820. In the 1850 census
of Mercer Co., Illinois he list his age at 35 (1815).
The actual dates of 18 June 1815 (oops.. no note here but I think
came from Wes... He settled a Donation Land Claim No. 1533 in 1852 in Linn Co.,

Emma's Notes: The b. date of 18 June 1815 for John J. Clark comes from his
obituary. He too was a Baptist Minister and formed churches in both Oregon and
Washington.
H. Rosetta CLARK #729, b. 10 Apr 1818 in Reading, Hamilton Co., OH.
She married Ransom LONG #18612, married 4 Aug 1833 in Canton, Fulton Co., IL,
b. 24 Dec 1812 in Kanawha Co., VA, d. 5 Apr 1898 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., WA.
Rosetta died 27 Jun 1886 in Pomeroy, Garfield Co., WA, buried: in Pataha
Cementary, Garfield, WA.
married Ransom LONG 21 Aug 1833 in Canton, Fulton, IL... Ransom Long,
b. 24 Dec 1812 in Kanawha, Kanawha, VA, d. 5 Apr. 1898 in Pomeroy, garfield,
WA... Based on 1820 census 1811-1820. Actual date of April 10, 1818 came from
tombstone information. Buried Pataha Flat Cemetery, Patraha Flat, Garfield
Co., Washington.
Emma's Notes: This family and the John J. Clark family traveled west to
Oregon together. We have basically the same info.
.
I. Cyrus CLARK #727, b. Abt 1820 in Probably IL or OH. He married
Charity HUDSON #18614, married Abt 1840 in Probably IL or OH, b. Abt 1820 in
Probably IL or OH. Cyrus died Aft 1845.
Best guess for birth date & location. Thought to be youngest
child...m. Charity Hudson, disappeared in the late 1840's leaving a wife & 2 children.
Charity: Best guess for birth date & location...
Emma's Notes: Charity Hudson married after Cyrus disappeared to William
Schemerhorn. They were married on 1 May 1850 in Mercer Co., Illinois. This
family shows up in the 1850 census where Charity indicates she was born in Indiana
about 1822. Children for Cyrus Clark and Charity Hudson are Rachel A. Clark,
abt 1842 and John Hudson Clark abt 1845.
J. Ransom CLARK #11112, b. Aft 1820 in Probably IL, d. 1852 in On
Route to OR.
Best guess for birth date & location... Probable child of these
parents....
IV. Melinda (Malinda) CLARK #11115, b. Abt 1770 in NY.
V. Rachel CLARK #11116, b. Abt 1770 in NY.
Emma's Notes: You have thrown me on this one. I have never seen a child by
this name listed for John Clark and Hannah/Anar Gibbs. I wonder if this one
hasn't gotten confused with John Clark Long, son of Ransom Long and Rosetta
Clark. He died on the trail to Oregon.
Ok... John Clark - thought to be son of the previous John Clark and Abigail
Hutchinson.
I really think Anna/Anar's real name was Hannah Gibbs.
In the "History of the Early Life of Mary Gibbs Bigelow" by Mary Bigelow, she
says, "One day while I was with Aunt Hannah Gibbs Clark, she was sweeping."
In the census records for their children who live to the 1880 census they
consistently indicated that their father was born in NY and mother was born in
Conn. That would mean that John was born in NY and Hannah in Conn.
The d. date and location for John Clark as abt June 1852 comes from a
writing of Memories by Irene Davis, his granddaughter. So far I have not been able
to locate an Oxford, Illinois. I am thinking it might be in the area of
Mercer Co., Illinois but am rather guessing on that. He is in the 1840 census in
Mercer Co.
Based on info. from the "History of the Early Life of Mary Gibbs Bigelow" by
mary Bigelow, the John Clark family and the Benjamin Gibbs family moved from
New York to Ohio about 1813. She describes their trip on a raft.
They ended up in Hamilton Co., Ohio where in 1813 John and "Anner" became
members of the Columbia Baptist Church. John Clark served as pastor there 1814 -
1816
Again, according to Mary Bigelow, they then moved to Edwards Co., Illinois.
John Clark and family are there in the 1820 census.
In 1825 - July 1 - Edwards Co., Illinois - Founding of Long Prairie Church -
John Clark is listed as having served as clerk for this church. Nathan
Bigelow is also listed as part of this church.
In 1833 - Fulton Co., Illinois - Bethel Church - Elder John Clark and wife
and others were excluded from the church for accepting an appointment with the
Baptist Home Mission Society in NY. They then formed the Duck Creek Church
which later became the First Baptist Church of Canton.
And then in 1840 we find John Clark and family in Mercer co., Ill.
Take care - Emma

Hi Joe,
I thought I might do this in sections.
Everyone seems to have that John Clark, b. abt 1748/1750 married Abigail
Hutchinson. But I haven't been able to find any documentation or records on this
marriage. Wish we could.
The same goes for the names of their children. I see them in lists but
haven't found any way to prove it yet..... <sigh>.
Back with the next section in just a few minutes.

Charles may have lived in Michigan at some time, daughters listed his birth there in their census information. To Joe Arlt and all Clark searchers,
My elusive NY Clark is Eleanor (Elinor, as my grandma wrote it in her bible)
Clark, born 1801 in Washington co. In 1826 was married to John Martin in
Saratoga county by Rev. Seymor Landon, who was by 1830 associated with the
Waterford Methodist Church. Eleanor died in June, 1844 in Northumberland,
Saratoga co. NY and was buried at nearby Brownsville Cemetery alongside her
son, John J., who died 4 months later at the age of 10. She also had
children named, Prudence, Warren, Arba, Sarah and Cecelia. I have never
connected Eleanor to a family, though suspect she may have been related to
Stephen B. and Deborah Clark of Washington co, whose children were: Arba,
born 1810; Stephen, born 1815; Hiram born 1820; and John, born 1821,
because of the unusual given name ARBA in both families and the fact that
all Stephen B.'s children are buried at Brownsville Cemetery in Saratoga Co.
Most of this material has been gleaned from the records of Grace
Vanderwerker once the historian of Saratoga Co. who had a special interest
since she was related to the mother of John Martin's second wife
Here is my husband's Clark line.
ALFRED CLARK, born about 1803 in NYand parents born in CT, according to
censuses. I have no trace of him before he shows up in Ashtabula County,
OH, and marries Mary Jane OATMAN, born in VT in 1813, on Dec. 4, 1828.
Alfred died Mar. 9, 1882, in Cherry Valley, Ashtabula Co., and Jane died
Apr. 29, 1884, same place.
They had 5, possibly 6, children:
I. MARIA M. CLARK, born about 1831, Ash. Co. On Mar 24, 1849, married
Perry A. GREEN(E), born Apr 27, 1827, Sweden, Monroe Co., NY, died Oct 16,
1897, Cherry Valley. They had 2 children: Dillon, born about 1858, and
Roscoe.
II. ANDREW CLARK, born about 1834 in Ash. Co. He married Elmira LOW, born
Aug. 9, 1834, in Cherry Valley, on Feb. 16, 1859. I don't have Andrew's
date of death; Elmira died Mar. 19, 1909.
A. FINLEY L. CLARK, born about 1861 in Cherry Valley; died 1901; no

B. SCOTT C. CLARK, born about 1876 in Cherry Valley
III & IV WILLARD & WILBERT CLARK, born 1836 in Ash. Co. Willard died Jul.

Richmond Twp., Ash. Co.
V. CHARLES EDGAR CLARK, born July 30, 1840 in Cherry Valley; died July 24,
1918 in Dodgeville, Ash. Co. On Oct. 22, 1861, he married Mary Elizabeth
GILLETT(E), born Sept. 15, 1840 (or 1848) in Cherry Valley, died Jan. 8,
1924, in Galion, Crawford Co., OH. They had the following children:
A. CORA E. CLARK, born about 1864; married Emory C. THOMPSON in 1887.
B. WILLIAM S. CLARK, born about 1870; married Abbie WOODWORTH in 1894.
C. WADE CLARK, born about 1872, married Belle ?. Had 2 children, Logan

lines I have in my data base from these geographical areas.
Hi Joe,
I really do appreciate all that you do on these lines. And thanks for
helping folks out.
I am still stuck on my John Clark and Anna/Anar/Hannah Gibbs.
Here is what I know so far.
John Clark was born abt 1779 in NY and died June 1852 in Illinois.
Anna Gibbs was born 8 May 1780 in Litchfield Co., Conn. and died 4 Feb 1860
in Linn Co., Oregon.
John and Anna had these children:
Orange - b. 1795/1801
Alvin - b. 15 May 1805
Cynthia - b. 1805/1810
Truman Gibbs - b. 29 May 1806
Naomi - b. 1811/1820
Samuel - b. abt 1814
John J. - b. 18 June 1815
Rosetta - b. 19 Apr 1818
Cyrus - b. 1811/1820
Of these children, Orange, Alvin, Cynthia, Truman, Naomi and possibly Samuel
were born in NY
From what I have been able to figure out they were in the Broome Co., area of
NY.
In 1813 the moved from NY to Ohio and then later into Illinois.
I believe that the John Clark, b. abt 1779 in NY was the son of another John
Clark. But have not been able to connect to any family.
Thanks again and take care - Emma
I'm looking to connect, update, and correct the many unattached Clark(e)
lines I have in my data base from these geographical areas.
Please post any Clark(e) lines born BEFORE 1900 and I'll try to connect
them to what I have. I'll then post the complete line as I have it in my
data base and we can take it off line with the smaller group of those
researchers interested in that particular line.
