I have a rare book once owned by Joseph Clark Esq. of Northfield, Massachusetts. He was born about 1835 and married Martha M. He was widowed at the age of 65 and lived with two children named Merton J. Clark (b. June 1858) and Hattie M. Clark (born Oct. 1864).
The book is entitled: The spelling book : consisting of words in columns and sentences for oral and written exercises; together with prefixes, affixes, and important roots from the Greek and Latin languages / by Dr. William D. Swan. Published in 1851. It is probably Joseph Clark's school book as a child.
The inscription reads: Joseph Clark, Esq. aged 18, Northfield, Mass. Feb. 11, 1853.
There is a poem written lightly in pencil beneath the transcription that reads:
Those happy hours will pass away
And many a heart that once was gay
In some far distant land may dwell
And hear no more the old school bell
I would like to return this book to a family member. If you are interested, please send me your address and I will mail it for free.
