I have a rare book once owned by Joseph Clark. Inscribed on the 1st page is the following:
"Joseph Clark, Esq. aged 18
Northfield, Mass.
Feb 11th 1853"
"Those happy hours which pass away
And many a heart that once was gay
In some far distant land may dwell
And hear no more the old school bell"
On the last page of the cover is inscribed:
"May heaven protect you"
The book is entitled:
The spelling book: consisting of words in columns and sentences for oral and written exercises; together with prefixes, affixes and important roots from the Greek and Latin languages / by William D. Swan (Philadelphia: Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., 1851)
This must have been Mr. Clark's spelling book as a teenager.
Joseph Clark m. Martha M. He was born abt. Oct. 1835 and appears on the 1900 census in Northfield, Mass. aged 65 and widowed. He had at least 2 children named Merton J. & Hattie M. who were both single well into their 30s and 40s.
I would like to give this book to a relative. If interested, please send me your contact information and I will mail it to you.
My GGgrandfather is Gurdeon R. CLARK, b. 09 Oct 1827 in Salem, CT, married Mary E. MAYNARD 13 Feb 1850, d. 26 May 1902 in Franklin, CT. According to his death certificate, his parents were Richard CLARK & Lucy DART.
The 1850 census in East Lyme, New London, CT notes a Richard CLARK & Lucy CLARK, ages 60 & 69, respectively. This should make a birthdate of ~1790 for Richard.
Lyme, New London, CT birth records note a birth record for a Richard CLARK on 22 May 1791, parents Dudley CLARK & Edey BUMP. Lyme records also list the parents of Dudley as Daniel CLARK & Mary BAKER.
Looking for help to prove that 'my' Richard CLARK is the same Richard CLARK listed in the Lyme vital records. Do not know other children for Richard CLARK & Lucy DART.
Looking for help and/or cousins.
Thanks, Cindy

When did it become a requirement for a couple to get a marriage license in Connecticut? [I'm looking for more information than the marriage certificate gives]. Marriage in 1863.
Thanks. Cindy
