Chairman of the Directors of the Mortgage Investment Trust, for
many years a wholesale produce dealer, was born in South Royalston,
Mass., Dec. 15, 1849, son of Timothy and Mary A. (Sprague) Clark.
He attended the public schools of his native town, left home at
the age of 18 and was employed in Fitchburg with L. Sprague & Company
for 2 years. From 1869 to 1871 he was in the grocery business on his own
account from 1871 to 1873 in the boot and shoe business at South
Framingham; from 1873 to 1879 in Westboro in the boot, shoe and clothing
business, at which time he came to Worcester and engaged in the
wholesale produce business, engaging as a dealer in butter and produce.
His store was on Front Street for 5 years, later on Park Street. After
he retired, his business was incorporated under the name of the Union
Butter Company. Mr. Clark retired in 1902 and since then has resided in
this city at No. 15 Westland Street.
He is associated with his son and others in the Mortgage Investment
Trust, of which he is a trustee and chairman of the board of directors.
For many years Mr. Clark was in partneship with his brother George F.
Clark, in the firm of Clark Brothers in the men's furnishing business.
The store was on Front Street.
Mr. Clark is a member of the Commonwealth Club. In politics he is
Independent; in religion a free thinker. Always fond of travel, he has
been able in later years to find time fr this recreation. For 10 years,
during a greater part of the time, making tours to all parts of the
world. Few men have seen more of the world than he.
Mr. Clark married in South Royalston, 1871, Abbie J. Murdock, who
was born in Northfield, Mass., 1848, and died in this city, 1893. Mr.
and Mrs. Clark have 5 children, of whom 3 are now living and 2 died in
infancy. #1 Walter William; #2 Mabel Murdock, married John S.
Harrington, who is now engaged in the automobile business in
Springfield, Mass., and they have 2 children: John S. Jr. and William
Clark Harrington; #3 Gladys Alexander, graduated from the Worcester High
School and from Bedford Academy and resides with her father.
Timothy Clark, father of William B. Clark, was born in 1808, son of
Benjamin Clark, who was born in 1760, and died in 1853, and Susanna
(Dolbear) Clark, of Templeton. This Benjamin Clark was the third
Benjamin; his father, Benjamin (2) Clark was of Stoughton and Abington;
married Mehitable Edson, of Bridgewater, who died in 1841, aged 88
years. Benjamin Clark, first of the name, was born in 1720, died in
Abington in 1794. William B. Clark had 2 brothers, George F. and Henry
Watts Clark, deceased.

Founder of Clark University and College, was born in Hubbardston,
Mass., Feb. 1, 1815, and died in this city May 23, 1900. His early life
was devoted to the acquisition of a fortune, and his later years to the
study of the needs of the country in the lines of higher scientific
education, resulting in his foundation and endowment of Clark
University.
He was of old colonial stock, a descendant in the 7th generation
from Hugh Clark, a pioneer of Watertown, native of England, member of
the famous old Artillery Company of Boston. The Clark line is: Jonas G.
7, William Smith 6, William 5, John 4, Issac 3, John 2, and Hugh 1.
John 2 Clark lived in Newton; John 4 Clark settled in Hubbardston
about 1750; was a Captain and held all the important town offices;
delegate to the first Provincial Congress of Mass.; furnished supplies
to the Continental Army during the Revolution at Lexington. William
Smith 6 Clark, born January 22, 1784, and Elizabeth (Clark) Clark,
daughter of Lt. Samuel Clark, were the parents of Jonas Gilman Clark.
Jonas G. Clark attended the public schools ad learned the trade of
carriage making. Later he had a shop of his own, but eventually became
engaged in the manufacture and sale of general hardware and household
furniture, having stores in Lowell and Milford, Mass. He prospered in
business, but seeing greater opportunities on the Western coast, he
engaged in the California trade in partnership with George B. Wilbur, of
Hubbardston, who accompanied him to Calif. in the early '50's. There he
laid the foundation of his great fortune through dealing in miner's
supplies. Returning East he established a business in New York City, and
during the Civil War and reconstruction period made large transactions
in government securities. Later he invested heavily in real estate in
Boston and New York. In 1875 he sold his residence on Fifth Avenue, NY
and purchased another on 72nd Street. The later house sold for half a
million dollars when he came to Worcester to leave. In 1881 he built the
house on Elm Street, now owned by Mrs. Edward D. Thayer and he invested
in other real estate in this city, building a large business block on
Main Street and another on Front Street.
He spent much of his time in later years collecting books and was
keenly interested in his library. To his native town of Hubbardston, he
gave a public building for a library, post office and town office, and
fully filled the shelves of the library. This was the beginning of his
philanthropy. He became convinced that the country needed an institution
of learning where research and investigation would be encouraged to a
greater degree than was possibe in other Ameican universities where the
time of the professors was devoted largely to instruction. Abroad he
investigated universities and institutions. In 1887 his plans were
outlined and he purchaed the site for Clark University. Mr. Clark was a
director of the Worceter National Bank.
Mr. Clark married Oct. 6, 1836, Susan Wright of Hubbardston. They
had no children. Mrs. Clark died July 4, 1904, aged 87 years.

A great resource for Washington County (aka South County), RI Clark(e)
families is William E. Wright's spectacular book, _Ancestors and Descendants of
William Browning Greene and Mary Hoxie Lewis with Allied Families_, (Houston,
Texas: William E. Wright, 1993).

I, too, am looking for a Mercy _______ m. William Clark, Charlestown RI, and
had 5 children, born between 1790-1810. Wm. the father died in 1798 and the
mother, Mercy, died around 1808. Do have guardianship records regarding the
children: Joseph, William, Samuel Thompson, Marcy (Mercy), and Mary Polly.
Anyone with connections to this family, please let me know...on either side
as don't know how to connect these Clarks with other Clarks.
One of the children chose his "uncle Joseph" as guardian.
The Card family was also involved, becoming guardian to Mercy the mother as
she was unable to care for herself.
Marcy(Mercy) the daughter married Samuel Davis and they moved to Lee, Mass
and then to Renssaeler NY where they lived the rest of their lives.
Believe Mary Polly married a Card.
Samuel Thompson Clark married Lucinda Thompson (Wm/Hannah) and they moved to
Preston/Norwich NY and I am descended from this line.
Sincerely,
Bev Clark, Iowa
I am new to your listing and was wondering is anyone could help me with my
above brick wall. My great grandfather was William W. Clark, born February
20, 1784 in Trenton, Maine according to the Family Bible. I can't locate
any records for William Clark being born in Trenton. William Clark married
in 1806 to Hannah Cook and they had 14 children, one died very young.
Hannah & William lived in St. George, Me. for all of their married life.
William owned property in Tenants Harbor, the land his house was on in
Martinsville which faced Mosquito Island and half of Southern Island. This
is from his will filed in the Lincoln County Courthouse. The children born
of this marriage are as follows:

If anyone has any information on William W. Clark from Trenton, Maine I

researching this family. My grandfather was John Murphy Clark. Most of the
sons in this family were Sea Captains.

My Clark line is one of my brick walls. I've been in contact with several
Clark[e] researchers but am still stuck. Maybe someone out there can help.
Mercy West - no info on birth, death, or parentage
married David West (b. 11 Jul 1763, probably in or
near Lebanon, CT)
There is an article in the NEHGR on the West family that states that Mercy
was the daughter of a Capt. Gideon Clark and lived with her husband, David,
in Lebanon, CT. So far there's been no Mercy Clark found who fits the
criteria.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I thought I would clarify my post to the list. I absentmindedly replied to a
post forgetting that it was on the digest list.
So, here is something that would be of general interest.
Joseph Clark (1613-1683/4) was thought to have married Alice Pepper. But the
spouse has been determined to be Alice Fenn.
Christopher Gleason Clark, "The English Origins of Joseph Clark (1613-1683)
of Dedham and Medfield, Massachusetts",_New England Historical and Genealogical
Register_, 152 [1998]: 3-23
Hope this helps.

I have three different Clark(e) families and need some help on all three and always like to verify the children. Please include sources if available.
1.) Sarah W. Clark b. Jun 28, 1745, Union Twp, Tolland, Ct.
d. Feb 25, 1835, Newton Falls, Trumbull, OH
m. Jonathan Jacobs
c. 6 children
* Need help with her father Aaron. I have nothing on him, no vitals, no family etc.
2.) John O. Clark b. abt 1660, Ballyruff, Coleraine, Ireland
d. bef. May 19, 1750, South Hadley, Hampshire, MA
m. Agnes Adams, abt 1697
c. 10 children
* Need ancestor help with Agnes Adams.
3. ) Joseph Clark b 1597 Westhorpe, England
d. Jan 6, 1684, Medfield, Norfolk, MA
m. Alice Pepper 1640, London
c. 9 children
* Need to verify all info and find sources.
Thanks alot
Nancy
PS. I believe big lists with common names need to have a master list and also regional/state lists to further isolate. I have families with the surname of Smith, White, Brown, etc. that are almost impossible to research without the ability to isolate to a region or state to find and track a family. Thank you for the New England Clark list.
Helen, Newport - Births and Deaths (Arnold's VRRI) pg. 89 1-102 Clarke,
John Bliven, of George and Desire, July 8, 1806. This is the only John with
middle initial in your time frame found in Arnold's or Beaman's VRRI. Is
there a slight chance this could be your John?

Marilyn, you didn't mention a marriage date for Cornelius and Patience.
Portsmouth Marriages, 1-72 Clarke, Cornelius, of Newport, and Patience
Carter, of Portsmouth; m. by William Sanford, Dec. 24, 1741 (Arnolds Vital
Records of Rhode Island). (I have the cd, but there is no index except for
each individual town which makes searching long and tedious.
Hope this adds something.

Looking for ancestors of Hannah G. CLARK of Maine and later California.
Here is what I have learned about her:
Middle name may have been Gooding or Goding (International Genealogical
Index)
Born 5 August 1829 in Skowhegan, Maine to Atherton CLARK and Mary
GODING. ( International Genealogical Index, year and State confirmed in
1850 through 1880 Federal Census Records)
Siblings may have been:
1. Anne Judson CLARK b. 30 April 1831 (International Genealogical
Index); probably m. 1863 in Skowhegan, Maine, Abner C. EMERY
("Genealogical Records of Descendants of John and Anthony Emery of
Newbury, Mass. 1590-1890" Complied by Rev. Rufus Emery, printed in 1891
by The Salem Press, p. 473).
2. Charles Emerson CLARK b. 1828, d. 1839 (International Genealogical
Index)
Married Charles C. EMERY 15 May 1848 in Sangerville, Maine (Sprague's
Journal of Maine History, p. 175 as transcribed on RootsWeb. com , year
& place confirmed in "Genealogical Records of Descendants of John and
Anthony Emery of Newbury, Mass. 1590-1890" Complied by Rev. Rufus Emery,
printed in 1891 by The Salem Press, p. 473). Note: Charles was the
older brother of Abner C. EMERY who married Anne J. CLARK ("Genealogical
Records of Descendants of John and Anthony Emery of Newbury, Mass.
1590-1890" Complied by Rev. Rufus Emery, printed in 1891 by The Salem
Press, p. 473).
The marriage of Hannah and Charles was performed by Wm. G. CLARK, J. P.
(Sprague's Journal of Maine History, p. 175 as transcribed on RootsWeb.
com)
Was this Wm. G. CLARK a relative of Hannah's?? In the same source on p.
181, William G. CLARK is listed as the County Treasurer 1842-1849.
According to the Federal Census Records Hannah and Charles lived:
1850 - Waldoboro, Lincoln County, Maine (FHL film 443496 p. 207, Sheet
2, Lines 9 & 10)
1860 - Skowhegan Village, Somerset County, Maine (FHL film 803452, p.

In 1891 Hannah and her son Walter attended the wedding of her son,
George. ("The St Helena Star", St. Helena, Napa County, California, 18
September 1891, Vol 18, No. 1, page 3)
If anyone recognizes any of this and has any other clues about Hannah G.
(CLARK) EMERY's ancestors I would appreciate hearing from you.
Anna Belle Emery
Hi,
I thought that I'd give this new list a try. I periodically work on my
wife's family history and I'm looking for a John Clark born in VT 1783
or 1784, possibly in Charlotte, Chittenden Co., VT. He married Nancy
Humes, and the family moved to Ross County, Ohio; to Indiana; and
finally to Dade County, Missouri. Their children included Ambrose Humes
Clark, b. April 28, 1818 in Ross County. His father may have also been
named John (b. Abt 1755 in VT) and his mother, Sally ? (also from VT).
Thanks,
Walt DeLong

Good morning,
A few days ago I posted a query about my "brick wall," James CLARK, probably
born in the 1790's. He could have been born in New England, but, since he
was a Mariner, he could have been born anywhere.
I'd like to ask an additional question about him. When he married Mrs.
Rhoda LAVARE in 1829 in Westport, MA (on the MA/RI border), he stated that
his last place of residence was Little Compton, RI. I have NO idea
whether James CLARK had a first marriage before he married Rhoda. But, I
have a small suspicion that he was married before, possibly in the early
1820's, and possibly he lost his first wife a few years later.
The reason I say this is that his daughter, Mary Anna CLARK (b1837 MA),
seems to have had CLARK relatives staying in touch with her right up until
her death in MA in 1899. John and Mary (CLARK) DEXTER only had one
daughter live to adulthood and marry. They lived most of their married
life in Killingly, CT (~1855 to ~1888). (John was born there in 1833 to a
DEXTER family which had arrived there in the 1790's.) In Melrose, MA,
in 1892, they adopted a baby girl, and they renamed her Mary Anna Clark
DEXTER. She would grow up to become my grandmother.
My grandmother only lived with them until her adoptive-mother's death in
1899. Her adoptive-father could not continue raising her, so she was put
into foster-care or went to live with relatives (we don't know which).
Her adoptive-father died in 1905. She spent probably 1905 to 1910 in a
"Home" in Boston, MA, as a teen, and then married on Christmas Eve, 1911.
My grandmother had memories of having CLARK relatives. She did not
remember whether they were uncles or cousins or what status they were.
This makes me suspect that her adoptive-mother's father, James CLARK, was
from a New England family.
So, I am looking for a James CLARK who had a first marriage in the early
1820's, and had CLARK sons in the 1820's. Or, I am looking for a James
CLARK who had at least two CLARK brothers who remained living in southern
New England (MA/RI/CT), and they had CLARK sons who would have kept in touch
with James' daughter, Mary Anna "Molly" (CLARK) DEXTER.
Thank you for your time. Enjoy your weekend.

Hello, Marilyn,
I just recently started researching this line, and I don't have information
on Cornelius's sons other than William Clark that left RI, married in CT, and
moved to Clarks Summit, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. I have a good friend
just south of Lackawanna that is going to try and do some research for me when
she has time. Maybe Clarks Summit has some more information about the Clark
history.
This is what I have:
1. William CLARK, b. 25 Dec 1757 in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island,
d. 11 Jun 1827 in Clarks Summit, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, resided
BEFORE 1792 in Connecticut, occupation Deacon, military Revolutionary War veteran.
>From a Picture Postcard History of Lackawanna County, Pa, 1997, Monument in
Clarks Green: "1757-1827, This tablet erected to the memory of Deacon William
Clark, born in Rhode Island 1757, who served his country under Gen. Gray at the
Battle of Bunker Hill. First settler north of these mountains. Came to this
place from Connecticut 1792. Died at this place bearing his name 1827."
From Name Origins of Northwest PA Towns: "In 1799, Deacon William Clark
cleared a triangular piece of land at the now-familiar summit. The cleared
parcel was referred to as a 'green,' hence Clarks Summit and Clarks Green."
From Clark's Summit History site: "Following the War, Congress had little
or no money. To pay the "American" soldiers, land was given to them to
settle. One of these first settler/soldiers was William Clarks, who fought at the
Battle of Bunker Hill and was with Washington at the Battle of Tenton. He was
given 800 acres of land in Pennsylvania and was one of the first settlers to
come to "Ebington", as it was then known.
The parcel granted to William Clark was part of the land in dispute
and when he went to verify his deed at the land grant office in Luzerne
County, he was told that his claim was worthless, and if he wished to settle on the
land he would have to pay for it.
Historical records have William Clark and his three sons arriving in
the Abington wilderness around the middle of March, 1799. William Clark built
his log cabin on the hill where the Clarks Green Cemetery is now located.
Early settlers faced many obststacles in their efforts to gain a
foothold in what were mostly hostile surrounding. At that time the Abingtons as
we know it today was part of Tunkhannock Township, an area covering 41 square
miles. The main industry was farming. Confounding their efforts, was the need
to fight a constant battle against wolves. A serious, persistent threat
menacing human life and livestock."

Hello Fellow Listers,
i am very excited about this new list! I am hoping someone will
recognize my family names and help me go further back. I have pictures
of all the individuals mentioned below. In addition, I have a picture
of a "Major Clark Great-Grandfather" maybe to my GGrandfather Charles
Clinton Clark (owner of album).
Please any lead, no matter how small would be greatly appreciated. I
started actively searching and sometimes helping others in their
search. But, it all came to an abrupt stop for months now, due to the
death of my (step) father to Colon Cancer. I am feeling my energy
coming back after this terrible loss. I would really like to put an
official name to the picture I mentioned and go even further with this
line.
Thanks again and God Bless!
-Helen
