Would like to compare notes with anyone researching Drury Clark who was on
Pitman Creek in Pulaski County, KY. I have three objectives:
1. What original source information has been found that identifies Drury
Clark, his father and county of origin?
2. What original sources identify the wife and children of Drury Clark?
3. Are there any male descendants of Drury Clark who would be willing to
participate in the Clark DNA Project for the purpose of determining whether
or not Thomas Clark of Pitman Creek and Drury were related?
I have reason to believe that Drury Clark was related to Thomas Clark who
was in Pulaski County between 1799-1810 and would be very interested in
discussing this possibility with anyone familiar with Drury Clark's line.

Am looking for information on the following family:
Elizabeth CLARK-Do not know when or where she was bn
William GREENSTREET bn abt 1780 in Kentucky ? died 19 Oct 1843 in Franklin County MO
They were married 14 Aug 1800 in Livingston Co KY
Their children:
Mary who married John Maupin
Polly ? is this Mary?
Delilia
James G. who married Margaret Smith
Elcey who married a Thompson
Rebecca who married a Thoma Todd
Joseph who married Prudence Bailey.
Christy.
Getting Clark's out of KY to their rightful ancestors seems to be a slow and
painful process with few good results. I do not know of your Thomas Clark;
however, I do remember that some Southern Maryland Clarks migrated to NC from St
Marys Co, MD circa 1780's. My wife is descended from George Clark who first
appears in Nelson Co, KY in 1787 along with a Joseph Clark and possibly a John
Clark and Elizabeth Clark. Elizabeth Clark married William Mattingly and
names sons; George Clark Mattingly and John Clark Mattingly. George Clark
marries Sarah Lee and names sons, James and Joseph, the latter is my wife's
ancestor. Joseph signed bond for marriage of Elizabeth to William Mattingly; however,
relationship is not given.
On the famous Virginia Clark line you will find that Jonathan Clark married
Elizabeth Wilson Clark and had at least one son, John Clark who married Ann
Rogers. Their first son, Jonathan Clark, rose thru the ranks in the Rev War to
become a General and married Sarah Hite; George Rogers Clark, bc1752 raised an
Army and chased the British out of Vincennes, Kaskaskia, and St Louis,
thereby keeping IL, IN in the Union, however, he never married and descendants are
unknown, if any; Ann Clark b1755 married Owen Gwathmey; John Clark, b1757,
served in the Rev War, rose to rank of Capt.; was captured and held in a prison
ship and died soon after exchange - he never married; Richard Clark served in
Rev War and became a Lt and died in service without marrying; Edmund Clark,
also serve in Rev War and rose to Captain, however, he never married; Lucy Clark
married Maj Wm Croghan who served with her brother George Rogers Clark; sister
Elizabeth Clark m Col Richard Clough Anderson; and brother William Clark born
Aug 1, 1779 made the famous trek with Meriwether Lewis and became a General.
William married Julia Hancock after the Discovery trip and I do not have info
on his children. HIs youngest sister Frances married 3 times.
History, as I recall it reports that William Clark and Meriwether Lewis both
became Governor of Missouri, and both are credited with committing suicide.
I'll change one of my last statements and state that William Clark may have had
three sons named Meriwether Lewis Clark; William P. Clark and Georges Rogers
Hancock Clark. The genealogy here is from the book, From Sea to Shining Sea
by James Alexander Thom.
I have never researched the Madison County Clarks; my wifes line was in
Nelson, Washington, Marion, etc.

Hello Clark searchers!
There was buzz in my Clark family that we were related to the G.R. Clark line too!
However, nothing is known about my GGF John B. CLARK/Clarke (June 1848 VA-1901 KY) prior to 1872 when he married Amelia Burden/BURTON in Ohio County, KY August 1872.
On my ggp's marriage documents, John Clark listed his residence as VA in 1872, his birthplace and his parents' birthplace as Virginia.
We have not found what brought John Clark to the Ohio County area of KY. He listed occupation as "laborer." There are Clarks in this Ohio Co. KY area but have not found a connection to them, yet!
The witnesses on their marriage certf are Amelia Burton's brothers Thomas Burton (ca1848-?) and (William) Henry Burton (ca1853 KY-1911 VA) and what looks like Henry Allen/Allan. There were Allens living next door to Margaret Burton in Ohio Co. 1870 Census.
Amelia---my gf Ben listed her as Permela E.----(Aug. 1851 Rockcastle Co.KY-1896) d/o Jesse and Margaret Brooks BURTON, Rockcastle Co. KY.
Jesse Burton born Pulaski Co. KY s/o Samuel Burton and Susannah Stringer.
Margaret A. Brooks born VA d/o Richard Brooks and Nancy Merriman/Merryman of Virginia later of Rockcastle Co. KY. (Have a bit more on Margaret's siblings...)
Richard Brooks s/o James Brooks and ?.
James BROOKS fought in Am. Rev.
After Jesse Burton died 1863, Margaret Brooks Burton is found in Ohio County, KY in 1870 Census living in Caney Precinct with 3 of their ch: Mealy (Permela), Mary Elizabeth and James Burton. Also in Margaret's HH is William Adams, 70, listed as farm hand.
By 1880, Margaret B. Burton is back in Rockcastle Co. KY living next door to my ggparents John and Amelia Clark and 3 of their children (Margaret age 5, Nanie J. age 3 and my gf Ben Clark age 1).
Please let me know if any of this Clark info sounds familiar?
Thanks so much!
Charlotte
Surnames: Clark/Clarke, Burton/Burden, Hughes, Brooks, Merriman/Merryman, Baxter (Clarks married into the following lines: Salyers/Sailors, Jeffrey/Jeffery, Hughes, Adams, Black, Atherton).

(I found this info online. have not proved its authenticity. bhc)
>> William Clark was born in 1770 to John and Ann Rogers Clark in Caroline
>> County, Virginia, the ninth of ten children.
In the autumn of 1784, the Clark family moved to Kentucky, and on a large
tract of land near Louisville built a home called Mulberry Hill.
At the age of 19, Clark joined the militia, and soon gained a captaincy. In
1791, he transferred to the regular army as an ensign, advancing to the rank
of lieutenant under Anthony Wayne. For four years he lived in the field with
the western army in Ohio and Indiana, learning the practical principles of
military command, engineering, construction and topography.
Resigning his commission in 1796, William Clark returned to Mulberry Hill,
where he tried to untangle the complicated financial affairs of his famous
older brother, George Rogers Clark. Clark's father died in 1799, and his
mother the following year.
In 1803, a letter arrived from Meriwether Lewis, a young officer who had
served with Clark in the western army, offering him a chance to serve as
co-leader of the government-sponsored Corps of Discovery.
After the Lewis and Clark expedition returned, President Jefferson appointed
Clark brigadier general of militia and superintendent of Indian affairs for
the Louisiana
Territory.
In January, 1808, Clark married 16 year old Julia Hancock, with whom he had
five children.
Julia became ill during a trip to Kentucky, where she died tragically at the
age of 28.
William Clark recovered from his grief and defeat, marrying Harriet Kennerly
Radford, a widow who was also a cousin of his first wife.
On September 1, 1838, after a brief illness, William Clark died at the age
of 69 in the home of his son on Broadway in St. Louis. After a grand funeral
procession which stretched over a mile along the streets of St. Louis, Clark
was buried with masonic and military honors outside the city, on the farm of
his nephew, Col. John O'Fallon. The gravesite is today incorporated within
the boundaries of Bellefontaine Cemetery. A son by his second wife, John
Kennerly Clark, bequeathed money for a monument over the grave, erected in
1904. >>
>> I am a different Clark Line. Although they lived within 5-8 miles of each
>> other. And members of my family hung out with theirs and called them
>> cousins. BUT, now we think that they had no idea if they were cousins or
>> not, all they knew is they had the same name and both lived in frontier
>> Virginia and later in other areas together.
The Goeorge Rogers Clark and William Clark lines past their father (John or
Jonathan) are the subject of some debate. All sorts of people add things to
meet their own expectations. In my line, The Captain Christopher Clark line,
there is enough question about his wifes last name that EVERYONE, has been
connnected through her side at one time or another.
Here is one possible line that I found. You have to take all of this stuff
with a grain of salt. And double check the heck out of it.
Many of the inland settlers were Irish ,German, Dutch and Scots. After the
American revolution it was not trendy to admit that your dad or grand dad
was English. Plus being an "Old American" family placed you way up the
social ladder.
But during the English occupation period (1620-1775), Admitting that you
were a Scot was saying you were down on the bottom of the ladder with or
just above the Irish. Remember, in the 1600s, Scotland was a country that
had rebelled in recent memory. Plus the snotty english saw Scots as being
crude.
Later in more recent times, Americans have become Anglophiles. Loving all
things English. So many a Scot or Irish frontiersman or woman has been
turned into some sort of descendant from and English Earl or Duke.
Americans all want to have a Knight in their closet and a coat of arms.
XXXX here we go...
John Clark (1) was born in 1630 in England. He died in Plantation on the
James River, VA. He married a woman referred to as the "Red haired beauty."
a Scots woman.
Their Son:
John Clark (2) was born circa 1655 in Tidewater, VA. He died in 1715 in VA.
He married Elizabeth Lumpkins.
Their Sons
1. James Clark was born in 1700 in King & Queen County, VA. He died in 1778
in Augusta County, VA. He married Elizabeth Summers in 1722 in Greenbrier
County, Wv. The Children of Jmaes might be: Jean Clark was born in 1723.
,Sarah Clark was born in 1727., John Griddle Clark born in 1729 in Augusta
Co., VA. He married Frances McClintock in 1771 in Greenbrier Co., VA., James
Clark was born in 1731. ,William Clark was born in 1731., James Clark was
born in 1733., Anne Clark was born in 1735, Samuel Clark was born in 1738.
,Alexander Clark was born in 1736, Margaret Clark was born in 1740. , Robert
Clark was born in 1748
2. John Griddle Clark supposedly married a Mcklintock and his daughter was
Martha Clark who married James Butcher.
3. John III Clark was born in VA. He died in 1757 in Caroline County, VA.
4. Jonathan Clark was born in VA @1680-1700. He died in 1734 in King & Queen
County, VA. He married Elizabeth Wilson born in 1707.
They had: ***John Clark (who was the 4th one I think)***, Ann Clark,
Benjamin Clark, And Elizabeth Clark
**This John Clark (Born around 1726) married Ann Rogers. Their children were
Revolutionary War Generals Jonathan Clark, George Rogers Clark, and a few Lt
brothers. The youngest brother was William Clark of the Lewis and Clark
expedition. He was later a general and the Gov of the Missouri territory. >>

Thanks Ruth and Beth,
I have also heard and read that George Rogers was never married but under
family trees in ancestor.com, George Rogers Clark and Jane Mercer came up as
married with numerous children. This George Rogers Clark had the correct
birth and death dates and correct parents so i have been wondering if that
could be accurate or possibly out of wedlock but on the family tree, the
children have his last name ??
My great, great grandfather Matthias Clark was born in Jefferson Co KY where
George Rogers died so i thought there might be more to the story.
Thanks. Christy Clark Gray

I am pleased to say that we have a perfect 25-marker dna match to another
descendant of Thomas Clark SR who was in Pulaski County, KY, 1799-1809. My
husband, a direct descendant of Samuel Clark b. 1775 VA (wife Polly
Williams), son of Thomas Clark SR, has a perfect match with a direct
descendant of James Clark b. ca. 1777 VA or NC (wife Agnes Henderson), also
a son of Thomas Clark SR. We are in the process of upgrading to the 37
marker test, which I fully expect to be a perfect match, as well.
Thomas Clark b. ca. 1755:
Earliest mention I have found so far is the 1795 tax list for Madison Co KY,
where he is polled with a son 16+ years of age. The following year Thomas is
polled with two sons 16+ years of age (presumably James and Stewart) and
Samuel, now age 21, is polled with Thomas. (Note: 1796 - 21 = 1775 year of
birth. The 1850 Clinton Co KY census states Samuel was born in 1775 in VA.)
In 1797 Thomas & Samuel are missing from the tax lists.
In 1798 Thomas & Samuel are polled together in Lincoln County KY. Samuel
Clark married Polly Williams on 03 Sep 1798 in Lincoln County, KY. (Note: On
10 Jul 1792 James Clark b. 1761-1764 married Leannah Ross, d/o Sarah Ross.
This same family settled upstream from Samuel Clark in Wayne County, and by
1829 had migrated to Bond Co IL with two of Thomas' children--William Clark
and Deborah Clark McGinnis, who had married Abraham McGinnis. The nature of
the relationship between this James Clark and Thomas Clark SR is unknown.)
In 1799 Pulaski Co KY was formed from Lincoln Co, and Thomas & Samuel were
polled in Pulaski. Subsequent tax lists reveal that they were living on
Cabbin Branch of Pitman Creek.
In 1806 Elinor Clark was polled on Pitman Creek with Thomas Clark. (The
daughter of James and Elizabeth Clark of Orange Co, NC, Elinor married her
cousin John Clark. They sold property in Randolph Co NC in 1786 and migrated
to Madison Co KY in 1789. John & Elinor Clark lived near Thomas Clark on
Paint Lick Creek in the part of Madison Co that would become Garrard Co.
Also nearby was Elinor's sister Catherine Clark, who also married an unknown
Clark, and Baptist(e) Clark, who (by all appearances) was related to old
Samuel Clark who died in Randolph Co, NC, in 1783. Old Samuel and Baptist
Clark originally came to Rowan Co NC from York Co PA ca. 1759. Old Samuel's
son Thomas b. 1743 York Co PA married Sarah Clark, another sister of Elinor
Clark.) Elinor removed to Warren Co TN after 1807, where several of Thomas'
sons also settled. She died in Rutherford Co TN ca. 1843.
Thomas Clark disappeared from Pulaski Co KY after 1809. We are uncertain if
he died at this time or also moved to Tennessee. His son Samuel settled in
Wayne Co KY after the War of 1812 and died in Clinton Co KY 1850-1860. Sons
Thomas and Stewart were in Warren Co TN in 1820; James was in Smith Co TN in
1820 & Warren Co in 1830; William and daughter Deborah McGinnis were in Bond
Co IL in 1820. Indications are that John & Alexander also went to Tennessee;
and youngest son Benjamin died in Van Buren Co TN before 1850. Thomas Jr
died in Dade Co GA ca. 1848. James, Stewart, William and Deborah all died in
Arkansas.
Joseph Clark, York Co SC:
It has recently come to my attention that Joseph Clark of York Co SC may
have been a close relation of James Clark who died 1796 in Orange Co NC.
<<Joseph Clark, born Bef. 1732; died Bet. July - August 06, 1810 in York
County, South Carolina. He was the son of William Clark and Unknown. He
married Margaret Faver Bef. 1764 in Unknown.>> His descendants may have
migrated into Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama. If there are any descendants
of this line, I'd like to compare notes. I also would like to invite any
Clark male who may be connected to these lines to participate in the
Virginia Clark DNA project to see if there is a possibility of a common
ancestor.
