Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dear Fellow Listers:
I can't find time to do the organizing and compiling I need to do on
several family lines, since I am receiving such a heavy volume of emails from the
various lists I am subscribed to. Therefore, I am temporarily unsubscribing
from this and several other lists to free up some of my time. Will be
re-subscribing once I get the material compiled which I have to date on this surname
list.
Anyone wishing to contact me can feel free to write to my email addy
above.
Thank you.
Martha

I have a JAMES NATHANIEL CLARK b. in Kentucky in 1823...
but I got the info from a Tennessee 1850 Census and it doesn't tell me WHERE
in Kentucky.....and I don't know his parents names....I do have his
siblings.....
His father 'unknown' Clark apparently left Tennessee after 1818 and arrived
in Kentucky before 1820
Children of CLARK and UNKNOWN are:
i. CHARITY CLARK, b. 1815, Tennessee; d. Tennessee; m. NEVER
MARRIED.
ii. CAROLINE CLARK, b. 1818, Tennessee; d. Tennessee; m. NEVER
MARRIED.
iii. CASWELL CLARK, b. 1820, Kentucky; m. MATHILDA JOLLEY, 20
Nov 1838, Tennessee.
iv. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CLARK, b. 1822, Kentucky; m. SARAH JANE
MARTIN, 27 Aug 1838, Tennessee.
2. v. JAMES NATHANIEL CLARK, b. 1823, Kentucky; d. 1884, Hunt Co., Texas
.m. MARTHA BRACKETT 25 Sep 1848 in Roane County, Tennessee.
3. vi. ISAAC ALEXANDER CLARK, b. 1824, Kentucky.m,MARY ANN MCKENRY
04 Mar 1849 in Tennessee.
vii. STEPHEN CLARK, b. 1832, Roan e Co., TN.; m. HANNAH
UNKNOWN, Unknown; Roane County, TN.
J. Nathaniel's children..
1. THOMAS C, b.1849
2.ALEXANDER ABRAHAM b.1852
3.SARAH b. 1854
4. MARY JANE b. 1856
5. JAMES FEATHERSTONE b.1857
6. RACHEL LOUISA b1859
7. JOSEPH b.1863
8.JOSEPHINE b.1867
9.S.J. "Jay"...............
If any of this looks familiar to anyone I surely appreciate a note from
you.................
Joyce Clark Foster
Lets clear one thing up. Up to this point the only siblings of Leonard
Clark of Smith Co., TN that are known are William and Edward Burgess
Clark. The later two children are half brothers and from Leonard
Clark Sr. and Mary Burgess Clark. Leonard Sr's first wife is unknown
and the only issue that is known is Leonard Jr. Leonard JR. probably
did have siblings but names are unknown at this time. Leonard Sr. came
to Granville Co., NC from MD. after the Revolutionary War. He lived
there from abt. 1785 to the mid 1790's when he moved to Pittsylvania
Co., Va. He died there in 1830. His son Leonard was born abt.
1784-1785. It is believed that he was born in NC (Granville Co., NC).
1786 Granville Co, NC Census
Fishing District
Leonard Clark WM 21-60 years
5 WM under 21 & above 60
3 WF all ages
2 blacks 12-50
2 blacks under 12 & above 50
From the above it appears that Leonard had children:; but there is a
good possibility that this is a family comrpising Leonard, his wife,
name unknown, and his son Leonard. The rest of the family just might be
John Clark's family. We just don't know.

Carol,
On looking more closely at your message, I must confess that I'm wondering, too, which Thomas you are referring to. There are two people off-list and a couple on the CLARKE-l and CLARK-KY-l lists I'd like to compare notes with, as everyone seems to have a piece of the puzzle. Perhaps we can continue this conversation off-list with everyone interested in sorting these specific Pulaski Clarks out? Let me start of with my earliest proven info and see if we are all in agreement:
Samuel Clark m. Polly Williams 03 Sep 1798 Lincoln Co, KY. This is the earliest documented event I can find recorded of my Samuel Clark Sr. Pulaski County was created from Lincoln county in 1799, when Samuel first appears on the Pulaski tax list:
1799 Pulaski Co, KY Tax List
THOMAS CLARK, 21+; 1 white male 16-20; 1 horse
SAMUEL CLARK, 21+; 1 white male 16-20; 1 horse
The 1850 Clinton Co KY census identifies Samuel's year and place of birth as 1775 VA. In 1799 he would have been 24 years old. A 16-20 yr old male is in Samuel's household--too old to be a son, but possibly at brother? The 1802 tax list identifies Sam's location as Pitman Creek where he has purchased 60 acres.
Thomas Clark in 1799 is also 21+ with a 16-20 yr old in the household. There is not enough information here to draw any conclusions, but subsequent information will shed some light...
1800 Pulaski Co, KY Tax List #2 by Edward Northcraft Cullom, Comr.
ROLLY CLARK, 200a. Sinking Cr, entered by same. 1 male 21+; 3 horses. (Sinking Cr located in what became eastern Wayne Co; Rolly/Raleigh Clark is not related to the other Clarks.)
1800 Pulaski Co, KY Tax List #3 by Edward Turner, Comr.
June: SAMUEL CLARK, 21+
July: THOMAS CLARK JUNR, 21+, 1 horse
July: Steward Clark, 21+, 1 horse {son of Sam ?, now age 21, b. 1779?)
July: THOMAS CLARK SR., 21+; 2 males 16-20; 2 horses {another son has
reached age 16, b. 1784]
There are now two Thomas Clarks in Pulaski in 1800, presenting us with several possibilities:
1) Thomas Clark Junr appeared on the 1799 tax list and Thomas SR is a new arrival.
2) Thomas Clark Junr was one of the 16-20 yr old males on the 1799 tax list and Thomas SR is the Thomas identified on the 1799 tax list.
3) Thomas SR appears on the 1799 tax list and Thomas Junr is a new arrival.
The following letter written by a grandson of Thomas Clark SR sheds further light:
<< "I knew your father well. He was my own cousin and your mother was related on my mother's side. Your mother's grandmother was my mother's aunt. Her name was Deboys. If you could see sister Lovina Cole at Morganville, I think you could find out more than I could tell you about the family there, as she is older and has always lived there.
I will give you the names of your grandfather's brothers: Samuel, Alexander, Stewart, James, William, John, Thomas, Benjamin. I think Uncle James, William and Stewart moved to Arkansas in the early 30's. I never knew anything of them since. Uncle James had a William but I don't know whether he had a middle F. or not. That is all the William I remember in the Uncle's families.
A son of Uncle Samuel came through Lookout Valley on his way West in the 30's and stopped at our place, but I don't remember what his given name was. I was just a boy and did not think much of it. This man was married and had a family. I was in Georgia last fall and ate dinner with your brother's wife's sister, Mrs. Tittle. I knew John English Clark in my boyhood days well and had I known that he had a son there I would have seen him. (This son, G.D. Clark, was the Judge of the Supreme Court.)
If you can tell me where and how you learned of this William F. Clark, I might recall more of him. I was raised just across the Caney Forks opposite where you now live, about a mile and a half below the falls. When I was about 16 we moved to Georgia. Shortly after we moved there, Uncle Sam's son came through"---dated November 5, 1899.
(This letter was written by James Clark, son of Rev. Thomas Clark and Elizabeth Clark. He moved to Marion Co., IA from Dade Co., GA about 1849 along with siblings John Clark, Thomas Clark, & Agnes Clark Watkins,) * This note added by Suzanne Smith>>
The above letter positively identifies the children of Thomas Clark SR, including Samuel, Thomas Jr--a baptist minister who migrated to Dade Co GA, and Stewart Clark.
The 1810 census places Thomas Clark Junr's dob sometime between 1775-1794. Since Thomas Junr was 21+ in 1800, we know he was born by 1779, further narrowing his dob to sometime between 1776-1779.
Stewart Clark first appears in July 1800, which places his year of birth at 1779. A direct descendant states that his year & place of birth was 1778 in NC. Unless Stewart and Thomas were twins, Thomas Junr's year of birth can probably be narrowed to sometime between 1776-1777. Note that Thomas Sr has a 2nd son 16-20 yrs old, which means at least one (if they are not twins) was born in 1784.
The 1801 tax list enumerates Stewart (Stuart), Samuel, Thomas w/2 males 16-20 (presumably SR), and Thomas (presumably Junr.)
The 1802 tax list places 5 Clarks in District 2:
1802 Pulaski Co, KY Tax List - Dist 1
1802 Pulaski Co, KY Tax List - Dist 2
THOMAS CLARK, 21+; 3 males 16-20; 3 horses (presumably SR)
Stewart Clark, 21+; 1 horse (s/o Thomas SR)
THOMAS CLARK, 16-20, (Is something missing here, or is Thomas Junr missing and a 3rd Thomas age 16-20 enumerated? Since Junr appears on the 1803 tax list, I tend to think this is an error in transcribing and should be Thomas Junr.)
SAMUEL CLARK, 21+; 60 acres on Pitman Creek entered by Samuel Clark; 1
horse (My Samuel now w/60 a. on Pitman Cr)
Sherman (?) Clark, 21+; 120a on Pitman Creek entered by THOMAS CLARK, 1
horse (Error in transcription? Whoever Sherman is, he now has 120 a. on Pitman Creek and must be a son of Thomas Sr. Pulaski deeds would come in very handy at this point.)
I must stop here, but note that up to this point, we are looking solely at the family of Thomas Clark SR, which does not include Thomas Stewart Clark who came after this family left Pulaski County.

Carol,
Too many John & Thomas Clarks! Perhaps I have already asked, and if so, please forgive my short memory--but do you have any Clark males in your line that might submit dna for a possible match?
