Hello,
Because of the "British Home Children" List, I've learned for 8 yrs. that
many of the ships which brought the children to Canada from the U.K.
sometimes had to go to a US port. This "child migration scheme" went on
from 1860's to 1930's. When the ships couldn't stop in Nova Scotia, New
Brunswick, or Prov. of Quebec because of bad weather, they often would stop
in Portland, Maine. If still in bad weather, they would go down to Boston,
MA, or then to New Bedford, MA. *
I think I've mentioned before that my ancestor, James CLARK / CLARKE, is a
"concrete-block wall." He "appeared" in Rhode Island ~1827 and married in
a nearby Massachusetts town in 1829, then fathered a daughter there in 1836,
and then "disappeared" during the 1840's. He might have been the James
who got on a ship in New Bedford, MA, in 1844 which was heading out to the
Indian Ocean. He deserted in Australia in 1845. During my research I
found out there was a James CLARK who was on a small ship in the St.
Lawrence River in ~1825. If it was him, James was "a travelin' man."

In case some have not heard, in Canada, this is: "2010, the Year of the
British Home Child." And the descendants of the "over 100,000" "former
child migrants" arriving in Canada are trying to "spread the word" and find
ways to celebrate this year.
There were probably many of the children who had the surname, CLARK or
CLARKE. There are at least 3 data bases for the children. If you
would like more information, you can search either "British Home Children"
or "Home Children, Canada." I can provide URL's for the important web
sites if anyone is interested.
(No one knows where my James CLARK was born or who his parents were. My
suspicion is that he was from a New England family, but there is no way to
find out. He was probably born during 1790's.)
