thanks so much for your efforts bill
they are very much appreciated
but i found out yesterday why my clarkes have been SO elusive
some kind souls from the norco list were able to tell me that my clarkes
had another surname!
many of them were known as clarke-ensbey
or ensbey-clarke
or just ensbey/ensby
(apparently it started off as endersby in england
but was mangled by the time they settled in australia)
obviously there is a long story connected with this situation
that i won't go into here or now
the main thing is i have found them
and i am thrilled to bits!
thanks again to you and the list for your kindnesses and generosity
shelley clarke
ps i have been able to trace my clarke line (from cambridgeshire) back to
the late 1500s

No 2: From Peter F...(3/9/03)My wife's family are the Clarkes who came to
NSW in 1825 and settled in
Woolwich. I would like to find out more about them
John Clarke, a builder, came free to the Colony of NSW in 1825. He is
recorded in the 1828 Census living with his wife Charlotte in George Street.
They were married in NSW. Charlotte was a widow with a daughter
Charlotte(Junior).
Other members of his family arrived after 1828 including his brother
(?)William. William married Charlotte Junior and they had 11(+?) children
including my wife's grandfather Ernest Henry Clarke. He was the mayor of
Hunters Hill. His father William was one of the original councillors.
If anyone recognises this family I would be please to talk to them either on
or off list
Peter also has some information about the Clarke family of Woolwich. In
addition I have information about various families from north east Scotland
in particular Nairn, Moray and Banff.
