Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello,
I'm a Clare and know a bit about the Norman connection of this
surname. Please help me to understand how this organisation/procedure/
emailing can assist me with the development of my family tree.
(Many of my closest ancestors lived in Rotherhithe but my
g.grandfather was born in Great Yarmouth before moving to Rotherhithe.)
Thank you,
Gerald Clare
Thank you John
Will try this when the forthcoming festivities are behind us.
I have been on the Clare List since 2001 and have corresponded with Roland
Clare in the past. When the DNA project started I put Roland in touch with
my male Clare cousins, whether or not they participated I know not. There
was a CLARE-DNA-PROJECT-List but it seems to have disappeared.
Regards
Brian

If you want to contact John Clare, I suggest that you send a letter sealed
in an SAE to The Development Office, Clare College, Trinity Lane, Cambridge
CB2 1TL, with a note inside the outer envelope asking them to forward it to
John Clare, formerly of Bedford (not John A Clare, which is me!). I do not
otherwise have a current email or snailmail address for him.
Incidentally, my family all came from Tyneside, for many generations back,
with nineteenth century Australian connections, so there is absolutely no
way I can link into a Bedford branch, but I do know that the highest
concentrations of the surname are in the Bedford and Liverpool areas.
You might like to know that the Clare surname was the subject of a research
project at Leicester University into DNA linkages, as a result of which one
of the Clares has details of quite a few branches. He can be contacted at
roland.clare(a)virgin.net. You are probably aware from 192.com that there are
about 6,000 males with the Clare surname in the UK..
Of course, I cannot be certain that either John or Roland would be able or
willing to help you ...
Regards
John

I have been having problems with my List emails - something do do with
Freeserve - which resulted in me getting unsubed from the Glam List and my
mailings to and from the Clare List being delayed - some not arriving at
all, e.g. my original email and your response (I determined this from the
Rootsweb archives). Your second email posted on 20 Dec only arrived in my
Inbox at 8.42 this morning.
Anyway that my problem.
Thank you for suggesting John Clare in Bromham. I have tried 192.com and
Directory Enquiries and don't find him listed. You suggest another address
that might enable me to contact him. Was he on the Clare List a few years
ago?
I've not a clue what Vickie J is on about. She seems to have strayed from
her own thread.
Merry Christmas

I know no more than that a few years ago a person called John Clare who was
interested in history lived at that address. He was about my age so should
still be active, although I do not know if he still lives there (but if you
draw a blank with Rosemary Drive I can give you another address which would
forward mail to his current address).

Greetings Clare Listers
Its six years since I posted my CLARE family on the List and I thought it
was about time it was repeated.
My ggg grandfather, Thomas CLARE, was born at Pavenham, BDF, c.1784 and,
with his step-brother, John CAVIT, founded the family clock and watchmaking
business at 82 High Street, Bedford. He married Sophia PINKERD on 11 Nov
1806.
They had 11 children all born in Bedford:-
Eliza b.19 Mar 1807; m. 2 Jan 1835 - Thomas KENT
Mary Ann b. 10 Nov 1808; m. 18 Jul 1842 - James Haliday WIMPERIS
Maria b. 1 Sep 1810; m. 16 Dec 1834 - John FRANCIS
Martha b. 26 Dec 1811; m. 30 Aug 1832 - Johannes Henry TIMAEUS
Thomas Pinkerd b. 17 Dec 1812; m. 14 Aug 1835 - Elizabeth COOKE
John b. 27 Dec 1814; m. Emma SWANNELL
Joseph (my gg grandfather) b. 20 Dec 1815; m. 4 Oct 1842 Ann WALKER
Sarah b. 26 Sep 1817
Jane b. 30 Sep 1819
James b. 4 Nov 1822; m.c. Jun 1857 - Ann LEONARD
Caroline b. 21 Nov 1825; m.c. Jun 1862 - William JONES
In 1841 & 1851 Thomas CLARE was living at Greyfriars Walk, Bedford with his
second wife Jane, whom he married soon after Sophia's death in July 1840. He
died at the almshouses on Harpur Green, Bedford 18 Jul 1862 and is buried in
Bedford Cemetery. Jane survived him by two years.
My g grandfather Joseph CLARE (son of Joseph CLARE 1815-1871) - b. in
Kimbolton, HUN, 1 Jul 1843; d. at Porthcawl, GLA, 15 Nov 1929 carried on the
family trade (Clock and Watchmaker; Jeweler), in Sandy, BDS, from 1869;
from Jul 1873 in Abergavenny, MON (adding Photography to his skills); and
Porthcawl from 1896. His sons, Herbert Carter CLARE - b. 10 Nov 1875; d. 23
May 1946 and Arthur George CLARE - b. 31 May 1884; d. 25 Apr 1956, carried
on the business in Porthcawl and Port Talbot, GLA, as did Herbert's children
until a few years ago. 175 years in the same trade.
Would appreciate contact with anyone researching this family of CLAREs from
Bedfordshire.

Hi Vickie,
They could be related to my Clares. However, the earliest Clare that I have
in my tree is John Clare who died sometime before 2 June 1810. That was the
date his will was read. He had a lot of land around Chesham (Bellingdon,
Chartridge, etc). I do not have anyone who goes back any further.
Regards,
Alix
