My great grandfather, Thomas Clare, came to Boston late in the 19th century from County Clare. He was a stone cutter, and after a serious fall, moved his family to Orange County Florida. He established the first fern nursury in the area. He raised
his children (Walter, Eva, and Mae, my grandmother) 7 miles from what is now downtown Orlando.
Anyone with knowledge of his family in Ireland please help me. In return I can provide other info on him if anyone is interested.
Thanks, John Cooke
Re: Margaret Clare
Unfortunately my Margaret was born in Pittsburgh or Westmoreland,
Pennsylvania according to the census. She spelled her name Clair and
changed it to Claire. I certainly thank you for your thoughtfulness in
contacting me. Sue

Hi JOhn
I am researching Clares in Co. Wicklow. I do have a database of baptism
names for that county including a Margaret. Do you know the names of her
parents?
Let me know and I will do a search for you.

I'm researching Margaret Clare, born Sept. 1828 in Ireland (both
parents born in Ireland), immigrated to US in 1840, married about
1848 to Charles A. Mann, wheelwright (b. Aug. 1829, immigrated
from Germany in 1845), and lived at 134 E. Water St. in Taunton,
Massachusetts. Children were William H. (b. 1859), Charles F. (my
great grandfather b. 1861), Martha (b. 1863), Fanny (b. 1864), and
Ida (b. 1867). Info from the US 1880 Census.
Charles, Margaret, and William Mann were living at 110 E. Water
St. in Taunton in 1900.
Any help, clues, hints, and cousins will be welcomed.

Thanks for the offer. I don't have the names of her parents and haven't been able to find any immigration
records or ship lists of 1840 for the family. I assume it was a family group that came over since she would
have been only 12 years old. They came over just before the big migration due to the potato famine so I'm
hoping they may be easy to spot since the records I've looked at seem to put Irish immigration at about
10,000/year in the 1830s-40. I know Margaret is a very common name and I haven't been able to find a middle
name or initial yet.
I'm going to search the 1860 and 1850 census this week at the library and if I find any new info I'll email it
to you. There doesn't seem to be many Clares in Massachusetts in the mid 19th century so I may be able to
come up with the rest of her family.
