Hi all,
Apologies to those of you receiving more than one copy of this. An odd
'almost meeting' happened in Ireland last month. When I called my cousin Míchéal,
he informed me that I just missed a Yank cousin by less than 30 minutes, whose
grandmother was the sister of my grandmother. Yesterday, I got a call from
him, guess Míchéal shared my work number with him. Anyway, have already
received many pics via email, of my Cleary family in the 1930s, farm pics, etc., and
some key information. Even though I have been to Clare County twice, I have
yet to get out to Holy Island (in the middle of Lough Derg) where my Clearys
are buried. And the first pic I downloaded was of a Cleary memorial stone on
Holy Island.
Sometimes, you just have to be in the right place at the right time. I went
to Ireland twice to visit my cousins, not to research, and somehow, someone
always found some little bit of info to give me. One cousin gave me a copy of
my great-grandfather's memorial card. Another introduced me to Sean Allen who
let me photograph his family's very old record book, showing all the
CLEARY-ALLEN links, with baptismal sponsors, dates, parents, and in some cases, date of
marriage.
I keep remembering odd bits my cousins have told me. And the pieces keep
falling into place. My great-great grandmother who I thought to be Mary Conway,
may actually be a Mary Hogan. Will need some help with that line.
The main point I'm trying to make is this, never give up, keep an open mind,
pay attention to the details. Look for those other folks researching your
lines, even if they are working on a different line, you may learn some key
evidence or method that will let you get one step further.

Hi all,
My Cleary cousins told me that they and I are related to author Edna O'Brien.
They did not say how, but said her 'Country Girls' book was about the people
of Scariff in Co Clare and was considered so scandalous at the time, it was
banned in Ireland. If anyone knows the family connection, I would love to see
it.
Thanks in advance,

Hi everyone,
I have resubbed my lists, the jet lag is past, and have one nice find to talk
about. I need to ask you all to look at this as this was written many, many
years ago and the person writing this has their own convention for presenting
family lists.
Here is what happened, I visited my cousin Míchéal, and he took me to visit
an elder of the townland, Sean ALLEN. Now there are three generations of ALLEN
farmers in this townland (currently), so senior John becomes Sean, son John
stays John and grandson John became Johnzie. Well Sean talks with us awhile,
we invite him inside the car as the rain starts. And we talk about the
families near by. He says he has this notebook somewhere abouts and when he finds it
he will bring it down for me to see. We are back in Míchéal's home about 30
minutes when Sean is knocking at the back door. He is somewhat shy, and
rarely comes inside to visit, but tells us to keep the notebook as long as we need,
and abruptly leaves, he has some business about.
I start to copy this notebook, and can't quite figure out everything, and
just decide I will photograph it. So, here is this find, sometimes there are no
dates, but it is of the Cloontyconnaught (Cloutha-Clonty-Clounty) townland
near Scariff in County Clare. Prior to 1910 parts of this townland were in
Galway County.
I will retype this here and please let me know if you can tell how the
relationships work, it is a non-standard layout, so not sure if it can be seen who
are the children of which couples. I will retype this exactly as I found it
(including caps) except for the underlines which rootsweb would remove:

For those of you still reading this, many thanks. My main question is this,
where the Sps. are listed would these be the parents of the above named
person? and sometimes there are dates, would you assume this to be a birth date?,
when there is a date for marriage it is spelled out so that date is clearly the
marriage date.
Note: I do not know if any of these CLEARYs are mine or not, but are probably
not in my direct line.
Thanks again,
Jim McNAMARA
