I was fortunate to receive a copy of a marriage register of
a great Uncle,Patrick Clear,b.1820 married 06 Dec.1858 , at St Joseph's
Catholic, Lucan, Ontario, Can.. This document listed his father as Jas.
Clear. Family lore listed the parents as Patrick and Mary. Patricks
younger brother Christopher .b.1839, was my grandfather, but he hadn't
married by the time he left Canada and came to Iowa.,in 1873. They emigrated
to Canada in 1847, from County Wexford, Ireland.( no village, town listed )
. This is the object of my search . I have found no evidence that other
members of the family may have accompanied them.. Both brothers changed the
spelling , Patrick to Claer and Chris to Clare., in the US
.Any help or suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Gladys,

Dear Marion,
With the gaps in dates of the baptisms of our James & Rose (Gaffney)
Clare, there is certainly room for your Thomas and Richard. The info I have (as
supplied in my first post to you) came via the Wicklow FHT.
It would not be the first such list with gaps caused by turbulent times, or missing
P.P., etc. We have a similar situation with my Fitzgeralds in Co. Tipperary -
widely scattered baptismal records and years of gaps
such as between 1790 and 1808. I was lucky in that my ggf was bapt in Dec. 1809 and
is recorded in parochial records.
Good hunting, Chuck FitzGerald

Dear Susan -
Several of the second generation of our Clare/Clear/Clair family immigrated and
settled first near Seneca Falls, NY. Some of Patrick's
children moved west from there and lived in or near Detroit.

Hi Chuck,
I know we have discussed this family before in connection to the two
brothers I have, Thomas CLARE b abt 1829 & Richard CLARE b abt 1830.
Although I am still having blanks with regard to the parents of these boys,
I am still curious that they may fit in with this family. I can trace them
back to have come from around the Raheenetague area which is a very short
distance from Glenealy.
My husband Denis CLARE was born and grew up in Ireland and knows the area
very well. His family I can trace back as far as Thomas CLARE as mentioned
above to that area of Wicklow. He assures me that Raheenteague and Glenealy
are very close.
So, please could you tell me if you researched the church records of the RC
Church at Wicklow Town, and whether you went back any further than Denis
baptized 1831. Also the Griffiths valuation information you got, what year
was that and did it list all the children individually?
If Rose and James married October 1828 and the first child you have recorded
was bap. 1831, there is a slim possibility that my Thomas b. abt 1829 and
Richard b. abt 1830 could squeeze in there to fill the gap.
Failing this theory, perhaps James CLARE b. abt. 1804 had a brother
!!!!!!!!!!!!
If anyone has any ideas how to further this research, I too would be
grateful to hear any ideas.

John's right about the List, but actually the name is connected. See:
http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/history/norman.htm
<http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/history/norman.htm>
I believe the County was named after Philip de Clare (rather than Thomas),
but that's not to say there's a modern demographic connection.
It raises another interesting point that I've wondered about for a while.
History tells us the male de Clare line died out in the 14th Century, but
genealogists claim them as out ancestors. How can both be true?
Also, how many on this list are of Irish extraction? I've been trying to
compile a one-name study of Irish Clares.

I suggest you will find better knowledge on the Clare County Mailing

little connection.
