Wow Marion,
Thank you for your help! The reason behind the name change was that Swindle,
meaning - cheat, double-cross, rip off, although different spelling, didn't
look so good in business. (This is the story anyhow). So his mothers
original surname was Clare.. so he decided to take that instead of his
fathers.
The below looks promising!
Thank you so much.
Melissa

Good morning Melissa
I do not have any Clare person who married a Swindells, unfortunately. It
does seem a bit odd that Ben would have changed his name to Clare. What
motive could he have possibly had?
I did a quick search for your Thomas Swindells and you might like to look at
the 1881 census which showed the following entries. I think the first is
worth investigating because of the Grocery Store connection.
40 Ashford St. Beswick, Lands. RG11 Folio 4018/18 Page 30
Thomas Swindells Head. Age 26. Born Manchester, Lancs. Occ. Grocers Shopman
Sarah E Swindells, Wife. Age 22. Occ. Formerly General Servant
Annie Swindells, Daughter. Age 3,
Sarah J Swindells age 2
Thomas Swindells, age 6m. (possibly your relative)
All born Manchester.
5 Pump St. G. Floor, Manchester. RG11, Folio 3984/39 Page 10
David Swindells, Head age 42, born Derby Occ Labourer
Charlotte Swindells age 39, b. Manchester
David Swindells, son, age 3 b. Manchester
Thomas Swindells, son, age 3, b. Manchester (poss. your relative)
Mary Swindells, dau, age 7m. b.Manchester
Hope that helps
Good luck in the search
Kind regards
Marion

Hi,
I am just starting out...
I am an Australian Clare, who's Grandfather was Ben Clare, conceived in UK,
but then born in Australia to parents Thomas Swindells & Edith Schoffield.
Now it seems Thomas and Edith, who were married in 1910 had a
Tobacconist/convenience store in Manchester. They changed there name back to
Clare - being Thomas's mothers maiden name.
So I am looking for anything that links in with this. A female Clare that
married a Swindells, and gave birth to a Thomas Swindells in 1885 - possibly
Manchester?
Love to know - I know its a long shot!
Thanks Mel
