Warren Davenport Clardy, 88, of Concord, died Wednesday at his home. He was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Warren and Elsie (Davenport) Clardy. He lived in Arlington, Va., for most of his life, moving to Concord in 1996. He served with the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II, obtaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Clardy was active in the organization of post-war aviation with the Civil Aeronautics Administration from 1946 to 1951. He worked as an administrative officer with the Federal Civil Defense Administration from 1951 to 1954 and for the U.S. Postal Service from 1954 to 1973, initially as an administrative officer for the Bureau of Finance and eventually running the management information center for the Postmaster General and the Board of Directors. He later worked as job developer in Arlington County's Job Development Program for Arlington residents age 60 or older. He was active in many civic, educational, senior citizen and historical organizat!
iona; served as president of the Arlington Historical Society, the Arlington County Council of PTA's from 1966 to 1968, Yorktown High School PTA twice, the Arlington Steering Committee for Services to Older Persons and the East Falls Church Civic Association; active in the Arlington Civic Federation, where he carried committees on public safety, health and welfare, publie services and the executive committee; assistant treasurer for the Arlington Committee of 100; served on the Arlington School Board Citizen's Advisory Committee; member of Arlington's for a Better County (ABC) and the Arlington Chamber of Commerce. He was also a volunteer fireman. He had a lifelong interest in Arlington history, culminating many years of research by writing "The Arlington Connection, a definitive history of the Arlington Name," which was published in October 2001 in the Arlington Historical Magazine. Jon Clardy of Ithaca, N.Y., and Christopher Clardy of Oak Park, Ill.; two daughters, Elizabeth Clardy of Concord and Susan McNevin of New Providence, N.J.; a brother, William Clardy of Springfield, Va.; 10 grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A brother, John Clardy, died in 1997. Memorial services will be held April 16 at 11 a.m. at the Memorial Chapel of Fort Myer, Va. Burial will follow in the Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Arlington Historical Society, 1805 South Arlington Ridge Road, Arlington, Va. 22203; or to the Center for Cardiac Care at Concord Hospital, c/o Dept. of Philanthropy, 250 Pleasant St., Concord 03301. Bennett Funeral Home, Concord, is in charge of arrangements.
