Hello,
I am relatively new to this group, so I am not exactly sure how you work.
I am trying to locate information on the parents of my Great Grandfather,
Harry W. Clapper, who according to the oral family tradition has the dates
1844- November 1881. I think that I have located the location of his death
in 1881 and will be visiting Champaign Co., OH soon to see if a death
certificate is on file there. According to the 1870 and 1880 census, he was
born in Ohio.
I am unable to locate a Harry Clapper in the 1850 and 1860 Census, but I
have found a Harrison Clapper, born 1840, in the 1850 and 1860 census.
I believe that he may have taken Harry as his "formal" name after the Civil
War. In the 1850 cnsus, Harrison is a member of the John and Catherine
Clapper family in Big Spring, Seneca Co. Ohio and is listed as a member of
the John and Katherine Clapper family in Iowa in the 1860 census. (
Harrison W. Clapper enlisted in Unit 21 Iowa Infantry for the Civil War, but
was rejected due to health reasons less than a month later.)
I am writing to inquire if anyone is working on a family which includes a
John (abt 1800-after 1885) and Catherine Clapper (abt 1802- after 1885):
The 1850 census:
John Clapper 50 born abt 1800 in PA
Catherine 48, born in PA
William 23 born in OH
Elizabeth 18 born in OH
Melinda(?) 10 born in OH
Harrison 10 born in OH
Samantha 10 born in OH
Emma 3 born in OH
The 1860 census :
John 60 born in Pennsylvania
Katharine 58 born in Pennsylvania
Harrison 19 born in Ohio
Emma 13 born in Ohio
Does anyone recognize this family?
Thanks.
Susan Logan

I am related to this Phillip Clapper through his wife Lozette Anderson. I have found several Census records for this family. I do have a few questions too. Found a picture of Philip's tombstone on findagrave.com
Look forward to emailing about this family.

There are over 100 Mary Clappers in this book. There is not any mention of a
Jeptha Charlton.
"Shortly after 1840 most of the Mathias Clapper descendants left Ohio to
migrate further west- some went to Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. They became
members of the Latter Day Saints." From page 36.

Hello List, I have been trying to sort out the many Clapper families of
these two counties and with the number of different families of Clappers,
Cloppers and Cleppers in these two counties it is surprising that no one else
has family ties from hear.
I am trying to find the parents of John Clapper born 1801 who was a
Blacksmith married to Anne Delancey, with children Elizabeth born 1831,
John born abt. 1832 who married Mary Ann Spangler, Daniel b. abt. 1835, Leah
who married Horace Gibb, Sarah who married Benjamin Noggle, and Peter ,
Sarah and Peter both moved to Minnesota, they may have also had a son Jacob
Weiland Klepper born Jan. 21, 1827 and was christened May 5, 1827 Upper
Bermudian Church, Huntington Twp, Adams County, PA , Johan and Anna were
listed as parents, same church Johan Christoph Klepper was Christened 1803
with John and Elizabeth as parents, I am tring to find out if John and
Elizabeth are my John's parents also,
In 1830 Dickinson Twp., Cumberland Co. PA page 146 listed a John Clapper
0/0/0/1/2/0/0/1 // 0/1/0/0/2/0/0/1
1840 same twp., Cumberland Co. PA page 46 Christopher Clopper is listed
1/0/0/0/0/1 // 2/2/0/01
1840 Huntington Twp., Adams Co. PA
Phillip Clepper
1/1/0/0/1 // 0/1/0/0/1
John Clapper
2/1/0/0/0/1/0/0/1 // 0/1/1/0/0/1
1850 my John clapper is in Adams Co. Huntington twp., Christopher Clapper
is in Dickinson Twp., Cumberland Co. and Phillip is also in Cumberland Co.
with son in household James O. Clepper who's biography is
is published.and is on line.
My theory is, John and Elizabeth are the parents of my John, Christopher
and Phillip Clapper and looking for anyone that has knowledge of these
peoples parents. Or anyone that might have an idea of how to proceed trying
to find the parents of my John Clapper. Thanks, Terry

There are 126 John Clappers in the book. In addition there are 49 John (with
a middle name) in the book.
That's a lot of John Clappers. Can you be more specific?

There is a 566 page book published by Marie Engel in 1980 with a title of
"The Clappers in America".
It starts with a Herman Clapper (ca 1734-1787) and his wife Catherine. They
had Henry B 1766, Catharine B 1770, John B 1773, Mary B 1775 and Elizabeth B
ca 1776.
I will be happy to look up any specific Clapper you might have.
