I've noticed on many family pages (I made the same mistake or I wouldn't say a thing) that have children of Ludwig (Ludwick) Lewis Clapp who born between 1792 (William Lewis Clapp) and 1803 (Sarah Clapp) and also Margaret Loy, his wife, b. 1790, as being born in Madison County, Alabama, or West Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama. Historically, this cannot be possible. Being an Alabamian, I don't know how I let the mistake slip in my own files. First, obviously, Alabama was not admitted into the Union until 1819 and was part of the Mississippi Territory. Most importantly, however, the region where Huntsville and Madison Co. are today was not even settled by whites until 1805 when John Hunt came to the area and was followed by others. Madison County, named for James Madison, was created in Dec. 13, 1808, by the governor of the Mississippi Territory. The town of Huntsville did not exist until 1811.
Ludwig (Ludwick) Lewis Clapp appears as "Lewis Clapp" on the 1809 Mississipppi Territorial Census, Madison Co., P. 689, Line 38 with 8 free family members, no slaves. It is safe to assume that the Clapp family migrated into the region of Madison Co., Mississippi Territory (Alabama), at sometime before the census of 1809 and that Ellizabeth (1808), John (1811), and Benjamin Lynn Clapp (1814) were born there. However, those born earlier are obviously North Carolinian.
