Phoebe Sophia Nave's origins seem shadowy to me. I have yet to find any source referencing her by her maiden name. There was a Nave family resident primarily in Taney County, MO as early as the 1830s and we are fortunate to have some details about them from The Turnbo Manuscripts, a keyword searchable archive of which can be found at the following site.
http://thelibrary.org/lochist/turnbo/index.html
Among the stories related is one which mentions two brothers of Alexander Clapp, Patterson and Irving (see WIPED OUT OF EXISTENCE BY WOLVES). From this and available census records we know that the Clapp and Nave families (or members thereof) were residing and/or working in the same localities, so it makes sense that our Phoebe came from this Nave family. Anecdotal evidence is provided by the fact that the marriage record for Benjamin Franklin Word and Mary Jane Clapp lists Thomas Stallcup as a witness. Thomas Stallcup was the son of Delila Elizabeth Clapp by her second marriage. Her first husband was Granville Nave who I presume to have been a brother or half-brother of Phoebe.
If it is the case that Phoebe came from this Nave family, then looking to their origins, the records indicate the elder members all came from Tennessee, and it turns out there was a fairly well documented Nave family which had settled in eastern Tennessee around the time of the America Revolution. That family had roots in Switzerland. Here is a link to a document describing this family...

I note that this history branches off to a tree that diverges from the one Phoebe would have belonged to, but it is one explanation for the Tennessee origin of her parents. What I take away from the narrative is that these Nave's were frontiersmen who moved directly into Indian lands. So it is at least conceivable that there was interaction or even intermarriage. But so far I have not found clear link nor lineage that would even suggest Native ancestry. I have a feeling this question will never be answered satisfactorily.

Hi, nice to hear from you. Sounds like it was an interesting trip to the cemeteries. Were you able to take any photos? Concerning the Native American connection. It was only family lore in my wife's family that Radiant Word's mother was 100% Oklahoma Cherokee. Her mother was Mary Jane Clapp but her name was unknown as part of the family story. Now as we see it is more likely that it was actually Mary Jane Clapp's mother, Phebe with the Native American blood or connection. What do you think, any ideas?
